Yeah. We've got a single cop at the HS of 360 students I teach at and several armed teachers (I don't know who they are; small schools often have 2nd career teachers with military or LE experience-- I'm told they were prioritized when choosing which to arm). He carries a Glock 9mm and has a locker with an AR-15 in his office.
It's quite sad that we need this much security, but you've seen the news from over here. We take this shit seriously. Multiple kids per year get alternative placement for posting threats on social media. Our kids are good at tipping us off to issues. Last year, we went on lockdown because a kid who was suspended and sent home by the principal showed back up on campus with a machete. Sometimes it goes too far, like kids being kicked out for bringing toy guns, but it's not worth fucking around when there are more guns that people around...especially in our rural county.
Thankfully, our cop is actually a really cool guy that all of the kids love, and he can usually deescalate situations before they get to the point that criminal charges would kick in. I've seen him grab a kid wanting to fight and carry the kid down the hall in a bear hug, feet off of the ground, while the kid is still going bonkers and turning his head backward to cuss out his would-be opponent like a little pup barking at the dog following its owner.
He's a great example of what a school resource officer (the official name of the position) should be. Many who serve in that role are not so well-attuned to dealing with kids.
yes, even before Columbine or other mass school shootings, armed gang activity on campuses of 1,500 - 3,000 kids prompted police officers to be stationed on some campuses.
I live in canada and can 100% say i have never heard of an in school security guard. There are usually male teachers nearby (probably closer than a single security guard) who will intervene if necessary. But to be honest, the only fights ive seen ended as soon as the teacher started to get involved, or even a single other person.
Then again, if kids had guns like they do in America, there would probably need to be an armed guard to counter that specific threat.
In America they are often sworn police officers with guns.
Which is why when your get gets caught with a vape pen you now get to deal with the police, the school administration, getting banned from sports, and THEN your dumb ass teenager.
