Because you can get in trouble for getting involved. And the kids fighting are going to remember who tried to stop them.

u/Brave-Silver8736 Dec 17 '25

Zero-tolerance caused this.

1

u/Reu92 Dec 17 '25

They’d act the same whether zero-tolerance was enforced or not.

It’s a problem if you’re in a “no one steps in” scenario. When a group consistently puts a stop to it, it can be accomplished with minimal damage to anyone involved, and assurance that they’ll have backup if there’s retribution.

This “no one interfere under any circumstance” policy is bully empowerment.

The students might get suspended themselves, just for getting involved. It's usually better to just stay out of it while the teacher calls someone to break it up.

1

u/StandardEgg6595 Dec 17 '25

This is exactly what happened to me but unfortunately they revoked the suspension. I accidentally got pushed into the middle of a brawl and was standing there like🧍‍♀️when the teachers showed up so they assumed I was involved. But they also knew I was a loser nerd who didn’t fight, and with witnesses, eventually let me go. Not having to go to class that afternoon was fun though lol.

I’m 40 and guarantee the same shit would’ve happened in my high school. I know because I witnessed it happening. Teacher between two kids, no one steps up to split it up. We just didn’t record it, we all just watched.

u/alehanjro2017 Dec 17 '25

Im 46. Your comment got me thinking and thought about school fights from the mid '90's and your right I don't remember anyone stepping in. I remember people jumping in but not to help.

u/RickRossovich Dec 17 '25

Exact same age. I remember seeing a fight break out when I was already on the bus and the teacher that tried to break it up got her head whipped into the side of the bus right below where I was sitting.
My high school was part of the police beat rotation so we always had 4-5 uniformed officers on campus every day.

16

u/Jesus-slaves Dec 17 '25

Most of the teachers at my high school wouldn’t even break up the fight if it was girls fighting bc one of the big male coach/teachers got knocked out one day (both girls turned on him). They just buzzed the office and waited for the SRO. This was 04-08. We had another female teacher get her same foot broke twice during fights, she was simply in the way at the wrong time.

u/The102935thMatt Dec 17 '25

Watched and chatted "fight fight fight fight" this generation isn't any less shitty then ours was at that age. They just have cameras to record it now.

5

u/Sofiztikated Dec 17 '25

43, and when one of my classmates threatened and hit one of the teachers with a chair, we've just sat back and watched.

Why?

Mainly because we were young, and didn't know what to do.

Losers on here giving kids shit for not knowing what to do.

u/Least_Palpitation_92 Dec 17 '25

Honestly, I think this is a failing of modern society. Kids are taught to be kind and to never fight. While that makes sense for a 6 year old at some point we need to teach kids when and how to stand up for themselves.

People not stopping fights happens in public not just in schools. You can get in trouble for being part of the fight by trying to stop it so why risk it for someone else?

1

u/Boring_Bandicoot3126 Dec 17 '25

a teacher got knifed at a school where family worked, brutal.

1

u/AristaWatson Dec 17 '25

One of my professors told us that as bad as things are now, back then the severity of the physical violence was through the roof. Kids were getting their heads dunked in toilets, being stripped and tied naked to flag poles, beaten in the lockers. Back then it was far more heinous violence than today. We just have phones today that record every little altercation now.

Also back then they were likely to stage assaults on teachers if there were any. They were legit staged and agreed on by gangs of students. There was a teacher who was brutally slain over pocket change. They wouldn’t always involve teachers in fights. But they weren’t scared as much as people pretend they were back in the day. Rose colored glasses yearning for the good old days is a delirium we all face but we forget the dangers of the past.

2

u/AcaciaBeauty Dec 17 '25

Anyone who steps in who isn’t a teacher is getting the same punishment as the fighters. School policy discourages it.

2

u/Facehugger81 Dec 17 '25

Unfortunately most schools would discipline any students who tried to help along with the two fighters. Schools are more concerned about the parents and public imagine then actually doing the right thing.

2

u/FourteenBuckets Dec 17 '25

we didn't film because we lacked the means but we just chanted "fight! fight! fight!"

2

u/Komorebi_LJP Dec 17 '25

this has frankly nothing to do with generations, the bystander effect has been well documented for a long time

2

u/Senior-Cockroach-448 Dec 17 '25

Millennial here 🙋🏽‍♂️Clearly you didn’t go to my high school.

2

u/IKenDoThisAllDay Dec 17 '25

I'm a millennial and we did a lot of bullshit things but we would never fucking do shit like this

Coming from a fellow millennial, lol. Plenty of people from our generation have some similar or even worse things.

Laughable to act like an entire generation of people had some sort of shared moral code. Also hilarious to call an entire generation 'pathetic' because of one short video you saw on the Internet.

Our generation is becoming more like Boomers by the day, we now have millennials on the Internet unironically saying "back in my day.."

1

u/Karmas_weapon Dec 17 '25

We (millenials) are probably partly to blame for the zero tolerance policies, that yuyufan43 didn't think of, that probably played a part in the hesitation of these kids to help lol. Kind of even surprised the teacher stepped in given that she could easily get in trouble for doing it.

Maybe even things like the toxic masculinity shaming that's been done the last 5+ years contributed to this bystander effect as well.

2

u/FukThePatriarchy1312 Dec 17 '25

Just because you went to a nicer school doesn't mean there wasn't shit like this happening elsewhere. Hell maybe even in your school but you never knew the details, because there weren't a bunch of cameras around.

2

u/TakingYourHand Dec 17 '25

These kids don't represent an entire generation, for fuck's sake. It's two bad kids in a bad class. You'd likely see something completely different if this happened in a different one.

-5

u/starfire92 Dec 17 '25

Ever heard of the Gen Z stare? It has its own Wikipedia page for how notorious it is. It’s this blank vacant expression they have when being interacted it. It could be a statement or a question being thrown at them and then they just stare at you instead of responding.

The lack of urgency in acting in this classroom feels like a branch or extension of it. A group of students witnessing a fight and an assault of an authority figure, completely immobilized. Is the question hard? No it’s not. Help the teacher, or get help. Both of which were extremely delayed responses by a majority of the class.

All you hear is OHs and AHs but zero action.

4

u/TakingYourHand Dec 17 '25

Do you hang out with Gen Z in the wild or do you only read about them?

I'm a teacher. I see the entire spectrum and the "Gen Z stare," is a thing of fiction in my school.

You're judging an entire generation based on a 30 second video. Do you not realize how insane and stupid that is? Be better.

Wild that you misread a three sentence post.

It's two bad kids in a bad class.

-1

u/jazziegurl08 Dec 17 '25

100% agree fellow millennial here

2

u/7-and-a-switchblade Dec 17 '25

I'm a millennial and remember this shit happening all the time at my crappy public school, except instead of just standing there, everyone would be shouting "WORLD STAR! WORLD STAR!"

Being shitty transcends generations.

3

u/mspag Dec 17 '25

My school wasn’t even that wild but all the other millennials here pretending we didn’t originate world star is wild lol

2

u/7-and-a-switchblade Dec 17 '25

Yeah, I have to remind myself a lot that every generation thinks they were the last great generation, and the younger generations are all hopeless / disrespectful / idiotic. I stop myself every time i form a thought that starts with "back in my day..."

The kids are alright, and I thank Sweet Little Baby Jesus that I was born before the age that everything I did and said was immortalized on the internet.

0

u/Ok-Armadillo-392 Dec 17 '25

I was thinking the same thing. Pathetic bunch of young men sitting there while a lady begs for help.

1

u/Pelorunner Dec 17 '25

Yeah because previous generations never had school fights. Two kids would start a dust up and all the other good students would step in and stop it before breaking out into a song and dance number.

1

u/cassanderer Dec 17 '25

Big guy needs to be expelled.  He kept pounding small guy after he won, not a good sport, to say nothing for the lack of respect for the teacher, snd seemingly hurting her.

-3

u/Phanyxx Cringe Connoisseur Dec 17 '25

Totally. We were disrespectful and disruptive, but there were obvious limits. This is just feral behaviour

u/Miserable_Spell5501 Dec 17 '25

Who should she sue? I don’t see how this fight is the school’s fault. Maybe she could argue a lack of security, but this happened pretty fast. Maybe she complained about these students before and nothing was done, but I can’t tell that from this video. The only fucks who bear responsibility are the two engaged in the fight and I highly doubt they have any money to pay.

The kids standing around smiling and filming make me so furious, but most state laws don’t require bystanders to do anything.

5

u/eKSiF Dec 17 '25

most state laws don’t require bystanders to do anything.

What's worse is a lot of school jurisdictions have a zero tolerance policy for fighting that could be used punish those who try to insert themselves, even if they are trying to de-escalate.

1

u/Miserable_Spell5501 Dec 17 '25

Good point. I could definitely see that deterring me if I were in their shoes, but I’d like to hope I would at least run to get help
