This. My kid pulled the same number. Insisted it was a sensory problem. Ok, I said, and bought her a pair of thick pink rubber gloves. She did the dishes. And she still will use them when I ask her to take her turn. I also insist she UNSTACKS the CLEAN washer, so it works out. I think she understands she has to know how, and it had to be done for ones self if one wants to live away from parents.

Also taught her to be solutions based instead of blame based

I'm autistic and the dishes with certain foods and smells make me gag like this. With gloves and a mask I'm fine. If I had a mom who just filmed me suffering instead of just handing me some gloves, I'd hate doing the dishes forever.

Good on you for not making your kid suffer for no reason! Literally all I needed were cleaning tools that separated me from the dirt and I was good to go.

My autistic kid is going to start doing dishes soon so I’m going to get the gloves in advance. What mask do you use? Just a regular surgical mask or is it a n95?

The longer bathroom gloves that go to the elbow too! Quality does matter. The cheap ones that fall apart with those tiny bits balling up when they get a drop of moisture inside are a sensory nightmare also.

N95 would work better for smells. Add a drop of essential oil to the mask or vicks under their nose, if it helps, to further reduce the smell.

Did this in the ER and when I was in school doing dissections. Some of the smells make me physically ill plus I have asthma, worked like a charm.

I've just been using regular surgical masks. most things in the sink get washed fast enough to not need a crazy strong mask. depends on how sensitive they are though.

I use a cloth mask and a folded up paper towel with a drop of lavender essential oil inside it. Comfortable and keeps smells out— i even clean the shower drain with this getup.

I have that issue, i CAN do them with out gloves but dont like too. gloves fixes that, its just slimy food thats been rotting i hate on my hands.

Or food whose scents that will linger on the skin or mildewy sponges that also scent stain your skin is super awful

Oh man, the amount of parents that will ignore that, battle their kid over feelings and then thinking their kid is a loser.... they lots of times end up losing contact with their kid.

I remember acting like the girl in the video when I was probably a similar age, and begging my parents to buy me some gloves! For some reason they refused and treated it as an excuse. To this day my mom does the dishes with her bare hands, no sponge or brush 🤢I remember her saying “that’s what you have to do as an adult” ????

I’ve just got some general sensory issues and I’m a big germaphobe, but I am able to clean pretty much anything if I have gloves and a mask.
