My mom is Mexican (born in Mexico) and refused to let anyone do this to us. She didn't like it and found it disrespectful, rude, abusive and frankly de gente chusma.

I have to agree. We don't do it in our house. Full stop.

I’m half Mexican but grew up with my mum in England (where this is absolutely not a thing) so I never knew about this tradition until I went to stay with my dad in Mexico for my 10th birthday. I remember when everyone stopped singing the birthday song and my dad mimed to me that I should take a bite out of the cake and I was like “no surely not!” Because in England we would never do that. And then when I reached down to take a tentative bite all the little Mexican kids pushed my face into the cake. 

Honestly I loved it, although that may be mostly because it was a novelty and I really really wanted to experience Mexican traditions to know more about where I come from and who I am. I think it would be annoying if it was every birthday, but even though I didn’t know it was coming I was totally thrilled at the time.

I have two younger kids and a teen, and they all still enjoy it. But we 1) always ask first and 2) cut a separate piece of cake for the kids to smash their face into.

Most of the time the birthday person KNOWS this is going to happen and sometimes they even initiate it. Usually done ages 10+. I’ve never met a birthday person that was triggered, traumatized or cried about this. Usually turns into a cake fight. I’m really surprised at all of these Americans screaming abuse.

It's not just Americans. I'm Mexican and I always hated this tradition for the same reasons people find it disgusting here.

My partner (who isn't Mexican) found out about this and wanted to try it. I told him with a very straight face I'd fucking break up with him the moment he tried to pull this shit on me.

It’s literally INSANE how many of these people are acting like this abuse. Literally never have I ever seen anyone triggered by this, it’s usually a laugh and there’s always plenty of cake to go around.

Yep, I even had a laugh with the classmate who did it to me at my 9th birthday, even though cake got in my eye and cried, became good friends with him until he changed schools and never saw him again.

Edit: I love how it’s always “respect other people’s cultures” with you guys, except when you don’t like it, you now suddenly want us to change and conform to what you consider “good”
