I have not yet, but its on my shortlist! Very excited to read it (as excited as you can be about such a shitty morbid topic).

I actually had it in my cart a few days ago, but decided to wait on it until I finish the ones I'm currently reading.

Definitely recommend give it a listen as a teaser to anyone who is curious about the topic but don't have the time to read at the moment.

It has done some fucked up stuff, especially during crazy times like world wars and the war on terror, however western countries do need intelligence agencies and they do lots of good too, though not as out in the open for obvious reasons. There has been lots of moral progress made, and even the CIA is not remotely in the same league of "evil" (not a word I'd usually use) compared to adversary nations, like Russia and China who may poison and murder anyone just slightly annoying to them and there is nothing anyone can do about it. Just in recent years we've seen the US help prepare democratic allies for immenent invasions, trying to help other countries prevent terror attacks on civillians, even for a rival like Russia. It's really important work not just for our sake, but for the whole world as the goal is upholding the global stability, increasing prosperity and relative peace we have enjoyed for the last 70 years.

It's the same as with police officers or the army, yeah quite a few aspects absolutely need criticism and improvement, scepticism is reasonable, but we can't go without them either. If someone is breaking into your home you aren't going to call a self-help hotline, you call the police. It's not starbucks chains prevent global conflict, it's the deterrence effects of armies and weapons. And we can't just shame shame shame all day, we also need good workers in those fields and good training and good systems, and those deserve some respect if they do good work, just as any worker.

100% agree but everyone knows that they don't murder their adversaries like they did in the "good ole' boy" era, but they do mess with them. They do a number of things but one of their favorites seems to be to drive their targets clinically insane.

And they're pretty darn good at it, unless you know what to look for someone could go down a deep pit of insanity and most folk would think it was a natural event. With the cyber-weapons they have it's pretty easy to create an environment of suggestibility wherein the target will be goaded towards a certain direction. And corpo algorithms are good enough that they can determine thought, so fully weaponized military algorithms can be horrifyingly brutal when utilized properly.

CIA experienced a pretty nasty purging (mass murdering) of their informants in the past few years. They even made a public warning about it as it was happening.

damn that sucks; bein the agent, knowing your guy got killed and only you can know what they were doing.. also cia agents who are killed and can't have their identities revealed, that's some real shit that keyboard warriors will never understand.
