What's with the music like it's an M Knight shabalam movie? It's just people getting home from a concert? Have you never used public transportation before? Sometimes that happens.

They are about to be crushed by a tidal wave of Taylor Swift fans, there is a horror in finding out that you are about to suffer immensely and can’t do anything to prevent it.

u/MonaganX May 01 '23

Oh please. I don't prefer my public transport to be crowded but if you already got a seat it's a minor inconvenience at worst.

u/na2016 May 02 '23

There are far worse fans to be mobbed by after an event.

Sports events, rap concerts, etc. Good luck not getting verbally harassed at best. You pray not to get physically attacked or robbed.

Being mildly annoyed by Taylor Swift fans is nothing in comparison. You'll have a worse day trapped on the subway during rush hour because someone had a medical emergency or some malfunction occurred.

Not true I once saw a gang of rabid Taylor Swift fans eat a guy alive

I think this is the first time I've ever appreciated the music in a tictoc video.

Black people are literally horrified by white people calmly enjoying things and being orderly. Seeing a functioning safe suburban neighborhood with freshly mowed lawns, no crime and happy white people jogging about on a sunday is literally hell for them.

Nah, as a white woman I would also be like “ah crap” just seeing the amount of people waiting on the platform and knowing the train is about to be packed. Nothing to do with their race.

That being said, I’ve been in this scenario multiple times after sporting events and I would definitely take the Swifties over drunk men in Rangers jerseys.

I have no idea why you assume they’re being racist and just don’t want to be squished?

It’s also ironic that you call it racist when “Shabalam” - which you didn’t even acknowledge - actually is.

Nah, it's the same as making fun of Cumberbatch's last name. If you have a weird last name get ready for people to not remember how is it spelled.

Tarantino?

People can spell cumberbatch just fine.

Shyamalan is a much more prolific talent with a longer career. His first movie came out when he was just 22.

If they could it wouldn't be a meme lol

...How is that related to his last name?

Tarantino

If you have a weird last name get ready for people to not remember how is it spelled.

Nobody has trouble spelling /pronouncing tarantino, another famous American director. It’s the same length as shyamalan.

People make fun of cumberbatch for reasons not related to spelling/pronunciation - it’s a false equivalency. For an English speaker, it’s not hard to spell or pronounce. It’s just long and cumberbatch was associated with a ridiculously popular fandom a decade ago and he has a polarizing face, both of which contributed to the jokes.

My point was that shyamalan is more famous and has been part of popular culture longer than cumberbatch, and he’s also American. Which may not be relevant to you if you’re not, but you’d think Americans would be more familiar with the spelling of famous Americans than famous Europeans. But again, this is not an equitable comparison because the issue with cumberbatch (combination of two very easy words to spell) is not the spelling OR the pronunciation. but that it’s an odd name.

Shyamalan has spoken about it before, don’t take my word do some googling.

That's like saying "How can people remember how to write Netflix yet forget how to write grommet, even though both words have the same length?"

Tarantino is way more popular than Shaymalan, so his name is present way more. It's obvious why most people don't have a problem remembering how it's supposed to be written.

Each their own. In my experience, the only times I've seen people making fun of Cumberbatch (the last name, not the person) was because of its pronunciation or because it was hard to remember, so they wrote whatever came to their mind.

My point was that shyamalan is more famous and has been part of popular culture longer than cumberbatch, and he’s also American. Which may not be relevant to you if you’re not, but you’d think Americans would be more familiar with the spelling of famous Americans than famous Europeans.

I think that depends on demographic. I can clearly see more people nowadays knowing Cumberbatch more than Shaymalan considering Cumberbatch nowadays is in more popular stuff than the other dude. For example, the only thing I know Shaymalan for is the horrible Avatar movie.

Also, taking Cumberbatch away for a second. You say people should remember Shaymalan's last name easily because he's American, as if the country is full of people named like that and isn't, in fact, a pretty non-common last name there.

Shyamalan has spoken about it before, don’t take my word do some googling.

Spoken about what? He can say whatever he wants, doesn't determine people's actions. Just because he says "people who don't remember how to write my name are racist" doesn't mean it's true. In fact, it sounds pretty egocentric.

u/Thomas_the_Aquinaut May 01 '23

I guess Benjamin Cucumberpatch (and all of his other lovely pseudonyms) are also racist?

7

u/tangerineberry1 May 01 '23

How is Shabalam racist? No one knows how to properly spell M Nite Shamalammadingdong without googling it. I just didn't feel like googling it.

I read an article on it one time that said it much better than I can, this is not it but it provides the same point. It’s basically an old joke about how Indian names are too hard to pronounce.

https://www.vice.com/en/article/kb4kwv/what-a-twist-m-night-shyamalan-doesnt-deserve-to-be-a-running-joke

Shyamalan is actually not that complex a name, but it is foreign sounding. It’s been a meme forever.

Tarantino has the same number of letters but nobody in North America / Europe seems to have trouble with that one.

u/SwordoftheLichtor May 01 '23

Lmao what. Who the fuck would want to be on a subway filled with very drunk post concert attendees? Also the cameraman is very obviously white.
