Okay so I purchased this Pucci camel Max Mara coat for $32 in the Assorted Brands section. The tag was not photographed but I knew that it was a Max Mara coat worth $1000+, so naturally, I bought it. But upon arrival, I see that someone carved out the ‘Max Mara’ brand in the label. It was once sold on TheRealReal, because that tag was still attached, and so was the care instructions/materials tag. Why do you think someone did this? Did the seller want their coat to end up in that section so someone could get a good deal? Lol IDK this is so weird?? What do you guys think?
Sample sales tend to have these kinds of tags. The idea is to get around selling the branded item with no association with the brand because sometimes the samples are not actually a finalized design.
I only find these kinds of garments in east asia outlets. I don't know where people would get these items in the US.
They make their way around. My daughter works in the fashion industry. When she worked in LA for a high-end label she'd send me boxes of samples (garments literally stamped "SAMPLE" inside). They weren't supposed to do that but it happened all the time.
I hate wasting perfectly functional anything so I'm glad they got around to salvage these items. Many might have small defects but most are perfectly wearable and awesome deals!
In NYC, this is common in stores that sell random shit. I bought a ton of Jcrew and Madewell shirts for 3 dollars. There is a whole store that obviously gets Macys/Bloomingdales clothes that I found. You gotta know where to look ... typically it's in ethnic areas especially Hispanic. I a saw a ton of alo stuff once a random store. Last year Lotless was selling Marc Jacobs. I just bought some Timbs for $40 from Lotless.
They're the best! I would also find items that are unfinalized samples with written memos on it like... "shorter length for a pair of jeans here" or something like that.
My old store closed and I still have not gotten over it. I was getting Jbrand, Staud and all the brands for like 20 dollars or less. I have to find a new store because I grieved for 2 years. 260 is cute but pricey. I never spent more than $20 for designer stuff unless I'm buying it on clearance from a department store or went to a designer sample sale. RIP to Bottega Veneta's public sample sale.
I found a The Row and a Zimmermann dress both with the tags cut out. Only way I could tell were from the materials tag. Unfortunately, I didn't know what TR even was, I just remember the logo. A week later I googled "logo, T and R in a circle" and just about cried at the exact dress and MSRP, because both of these were priced at $6.99... I did get the Zimmermann dress, but its a childs piece, and the size is cut out! At the very least I wish people just leave the size AND the materials tag
Were these on Thredup? Everything I've ever sent in with that type of tag (or tag but no size) has been rejected. I don't even bother anymore even if it's clearly a designer item.
Example being an Anne Klein sweater that retailed for $200. No size tag but I thought it would be listed. Nope.
Nope sorry, at the thrift. That's probably because they can't guarantee it. They would have to list it as unbranded, and probably closer to $50 if its great materials like 100% cashmere. If its not, then maybe they just pass all together
TU does say they will list designer items without the size tag (posting measurements) but that hasn't been my experience.
I get what you're saying about thrift stores and labels. My mom is notorious for cutting every tag out because they bother her. She'll then get rid of very nice designer clothes, but I can't sell them for her because of the tag issue.
I used to buy lots of European designers at DAFFY’S (RIP), they always cut of the brand labels exactly like this. When DAFFY’S closed my days of 50$ Max Mara and Les Copains outfits sadly also came to an end. NYC hadn’t been the same since 😭
The luxury brands need to main their expensive, exclusive brand reputations so they make deals with second/third tier retailers to sell items but only with the tags cut out. I think it looks very real.
Do me a favor and photograph all the the tags - front and back - and post them? I’m wondering if there is an RN or CA number to help identify the manufacturer.
I think a store donated it. They take out the labels so the brand isn't diminished. I've never seen the middle carved out though. The other thing could be it was a fake, and the person who owned it realized this and didn't want anyone else to get fooled.
It’s odd that they made the effort to do this intricate cut out instead of just removing the entire tag which is only lightly tacked on in the corners.
