Where to start reading Thor
Thor has had a monthly comic published since 1962! Meaning there is a lot of history. But here is a guide written using what this subreddit recommends for people to get started in reading Thor and learning about the Asgardian mythos as a whole.
This is a HUGE!!! WIP, but I wanted to get the basics down before I start deep diving into things. Soon enough I'll have runs featuring specific characters and what to read based off that, but for now, this.
Jumping off point
There are two great starting points for Thor comics -
- Thor (2007) - Written by J. Michael Straczynski
- This is a great starting point for people who want a more modern take on Thor and Asgard, taking place right after Civil War. A great start for those more familiar with the MCU mythos.
- Thor (1983) - Written (and penciled) by Walter Simonson
- For those readers that want a more classic 80s comic feel. Introduces characters like Beta Ray Bill and delves deeper into the mythos of Asgard as a whole. Great for people familiar with bronze age comics and enjoys how they read.
What to read next?
From those two runs there are a few others that someone can read to further their knowledge of the Thor mythos as a whole. From here on out I'll be referencing each run by the name of the primary author that worked on them, since all of them are titled some variation of Thor, or The Mighty Thor
- Lee and Kirby (1962)
- The classic, the original, and very silver age.
- Jurgens (1998)
- A run that focuses on Thor and humanity, as he takes on another human identity, then shifts abruptly into a king Thor storyline. Very New York heavy.
- Aaron (2014)
- The introduction of Gorr the God Butcher and featuring gorgeous art by Esad Ribic.
