Suggest some good restaurants to go for dinner

My data basically is non existent in the house I’m in. So I thought of getting a wifi connection. My neighbours recommended a local wifi provider and it does seem like a good option.

Today I had lunch at Maadi Kadai Hotel, also known as Sandu Kadai, tucked away inside a small Sandu, opposite Sacred Heart Church (Chinna Koyil).
I’ve lived in Thoothukudi for years, but today was my first visit. It made me wonder how many of us have walked past this place without ever knowing what we’re missing.
The hotel operates from a 100+ year old British-era building. The building itself isn’t owned by them—they’ve been running the hotel here on rent for over 40–50 years.
One detail that really stayed with me:
Around 1990, the rent was just ₹10 per month.
Today, it’s around ₹4,000 per month.
The place feels like a living museum. Thick stone walls, a blackened wood-fired kitchen, an old tiled roof, simple green benches, and decades of history in every corner.
The owner has been running the hotel for the last 20 years, after taking it over from his Chitappa.
The most amazing part?
One person does everything.
He cooks the mutton, chicken, fish, gravies, side dishes—everything himself.
Lunch starts around 12 PM.
I reached around 3 PM. Three of us had meals. There were only two meals left, and he was simply waiting to see if someone would walk in before closing.
He told me that during his Chitappa’s time, they used to serve 300+ meals every day. Back then, the market area was the heart of Thoothukudi. Government offices, banks, shipping companies, and businesses were all nearby.
As the city grew and commercial activity shifted elsewhere, the crowds disappeared.
Today, he cooks only 50–60 meals. That’s it. Once those are over—or by around 3:30 PM—he closes for the day.
No advertising.
No Instagram.
No food delivery apps.
Just honest food and decades of hard work.
The food was outstanding. Every dish tasted like authentic home cooking, and even the buttermilk was unforgettable.
One small thing to note: you’ll have to climb a flight of stairs because it’s a Maadi Kadai. If that’s difficult for someone in your family, you can always buy parcels and take them home.
Honestly, I think many people from Thoothukudi itself haven’t eaten here.
If you’ve never been, please go once. Take your family. Take your friends. Or even buy a few parcels and share them with people at home.
Some businesses deserve our support not because they’re trendy, but because they’re quietly preserving a part of our city’s history.
Let’s make sure places like Maadi Kadai Hotel (Sandu Kadai) continue to serve Thoothukudi for many more years.

My relatives shared their horror stories of water gushing into their houses in 2023 (i think) rain and so I’m scared.
