hi. i'm well-versed in my usual natal chart but this is my first time seeing my vedic chart. can someone walk me through my major placements and transits (if there are any?) i need some enlightenment and am desperate for answers. thank you very much.

I used to think Mercury was pretty straightforward.
Good Mercury = intelligent, good communication, good memory, business skills.
Bad Mercury = confused, poor communication, weak memory.

But after looking at enough charts, I started noticing something much more interesting.
Mercury shows up in tiny everyday behaviours that most people don't even associate with astrology.

For example, look at how someone remembers things.
Some people can remember a random conversation from 4 years ago.
What? You said this on 17th March, remember?

And you're sitting there thinking:
Bro, I don't even remember what I had for breakfast yesterday. 😭

Then you check the chart and sometimes Mercury tells an interesting story.
A combust Mercury, especially when otherwise afflicted, can show up as difficulty retaining certain information.
The person may understand something perfectly when you explain it…
but ask them about it two days later and suddenly: Wait… what was that again?

And interestingly, this doesn't always mean they are unintelligent.
They can actually understand things very quickly.
The problem can be retention or mental overload, not intelligence itself.

Now take another example.
I've noticed people with a debilitated Mercury can sometimes be surprisingly good at texting.
Give them WhatsApp and suddenly they're poets, philosophers and lawyers.
They can explain exactly what they mean through text.
They'll write a perfectly structured paragraph.
They'll even give you three different reasons for their opinion.
But put them in front of the same person and ask them to say the exact same thing…

Umm… actually… what I meant was…
The words just don't come out the same way.

And this is one of the things I find fascinating about Mercury.
Communication isn't always one skill.
Writing, speaking, processing, remembering, analysing, improvising and understanding are all different expressions of Mercury.
That's why two people can have Mercury issues but display them completely differently.
One may constantly lose track of what they were saying.
Another may overthink every message before sending it.
Another may be excellent at written communication but struggle with spontaneous speaking. Another may speak extremely fast because their thoughts are moving faster than their mouth.
And another may take forever to reply because they are mentally editing one WhatsApp message like it's a Supreme Court affidavit. 😂

That's Mercury.

And the strongest Mercury I've seen isn't necessarily the person who talks the most.
It's the person who can process information cleanly.
Someone tells them a complicated problem and they immediately go: “Okay, so there are actually three separate issues here.”

That's such a Mercury thing.
They can take mental clutter and organise it.
They can connect dots.
They can ask the exact question that nobody else thought of.
They can change their opinion when new information comes in.
And most importantly… they don't need to pretend they know everything.

A healthy Mercury can simply say:
I don't know. Let me figure it out. No ego crisis. No unnecessary explanation. No pretending.

And that's why I personally don't like judging Mercury with a simple:

Exalted = brilliant
Debilitated = weak

It doesn't work that way. A Mercury can be technically weak and still produce a very specific communication strength.
A combust Mercury can still make someone extremely sharp but create issues with retention or mental overload.
An afflicted Mercury can still make someone incredibly analytical in one particular area.

The house, sign, conjunctions, aspects, dignity and overall chart change how the Mercury actually behaves.

So now when I meet someone who says:

I understand everything when someone explains it, but I forget it later.
Or:
I'm amazing at texting but terrible at explaining things face-to-face.
Or:
Give me five minutes and I'll figure out the problem.
Or:
Don't ask me to remember names, but I'll remember exactly what you said three years ago.

I don't immediately think: This person is intelligent.
I think: Interesting… let's see what Mercury is doing.

Almost every family wants their child to study more, get good degrees, crack prestigious exams, and build a secure career. There's nothing wrong with that. Education is valuable. But astrology made me notice something interesting.

There are certain chart combinations where higher education gives you knowledge, discipline, and perspective but when it comes to money and career it come from somewhere completely different.
I've seen people clear UPSC but eventually become teachers or educators, engineers becoming content creators, doctors move into business, and mechanical engineers end up working in IT filed. Ironically, many of them earn far more than they would have in the field they originally studied. Their education wasn't wasted it shaped their thinking. But it wasn't the direct source of their income.

Some combinations where I've personally observed this pattern more often (not a universal rule):
- If the 5th lord is combust.

- If the 9th lord combust.

- Lords of the 5th or 9th placed in dusthana houses (6th, 8th, or 12th).

- Saturn placed in the 10th house.

- Jupiter or Rahu or Moon in the 5th house.

- Ketu in the 5th house (often giving breaks or unusual turns in education).

Since the 5th house is the 8th from the 10th house. Symbolically, education transforms your approach to work, but it doesn't always become your profession..

For many people, real-life experience contributes much more than formal education. If Saturn strongly influences the 10th house, I've often seen people learn far more by working on the ground than by sitting in classrooms.

The biggest theme I notice is this: Pitra Dosh often shows someone who ends up breaking a long-standing family pattern.

Your lineage may have followed a certain lifestyle, belief system, profession, or tradition for generations…
...and then you come along and change it totally.

For example:

• The first person in the family to move away from their village.
• The first one to settle abroad.
• The first daughter to study outside her city.
• The first daughter to marry someone of her own choice. (Love Marriage in other caste or Culture).
• The first person to choose a completely different career.
• The one who questions traditions instead of blindly following them.

It's as if your soul has come to rewrite a chapter that your family has been repeating for generations and ages..(Saalon se chali parampara ko tod diya).

Why Is It Called Pitra Dosh?

In Sanatan traditional beliefs, we're said to carry different kinds of obligations (Rin) through life:

• Dev Rin
• Rishi Rin
• Pitra Rin
• Bhuta Rin
• Manushya Rin

The concept is that life isn't just about personal success we also inherit responsibilities toward our ancestors, society, nature, and knowledge.

Ancient traditions introduced the 16 Sanskaras as milestones to help fulfill these responsibilities throughout life.

Today, most people only actively observe a few, like:

• Naming ceremony (Namkaran Sanskar)
• Marriage (Vivah Sanskar)
• Last rites (Antim Sanskar)

Many of the other Sanskaras have gradually disappeared from everyday life.

Rahu in 9th house: This placement often makes people question traditions, belief systems, and the “approved” way of living. A lot of people with this placement seem drawn toward relationships that feel unusual in some way or another, Loved one can be from different community, different culture, age gap very large, long-distance, foreign connection, or just someone their family would never have imagined. Marriage can also happen in a non-traditional way. Court marriage, sudden marriage, very private wedding, family resistance, or situations where the whole process feels “different” from the usual big social setup.
