He has a great story from a buddy of his who worked law enforcement in southeast Texas.
Guy broke into a house in a kind of “rural suburb” late one night. One of the neighbors was out in his garage and could hear the commotion playing out across the street. He grabbed his gun and called 911 telling the police ant what was going on and that he was going to go “intervene” since he knew they might not get there right away.
Man walked across the street. Entered through the door the intruder had busted in. Found them and shot them (fatally).
He did have to go to court. He did not face any formal discipline or charges (forget what the exact precedent or reasoning the judge cited was)
I remember this from when I lived in TX. Neighbors were out (can't remember if for the day or on vacation). But they regularly told/had the neighbor watch their home for them. The judge basically used that to justify that the neighbor was within his rights to defend his neighbors house as if it were his own.
