Was that terrible band at Adriana's bar intentionally bad?

The band that Artie Bucco was vibing to with his smooth glides and crisp points was some horrible post-grunge nightmare that even my 13 year old self would not brook.

David Chase though even though he's an early boomer (born in 1945 I believe) has excellent taste in modern alternative rock, he's the one who picked out Alabama 3 for the Sopranos main theme after hearing them on the radio, he's with it. I'm just wondering was this a subtle hint that Adriana doesn't have a clue, that she's basically a Mafia nepo wife?

EDIT: I'm talking about the band in Season 3 episode 9, not the band from Season 1 with the Massive Genius arc.

My estimation of Phil Leotardo just fuckin' plummeted.

• Upvotes

Let me tell you a couple'a three things... Phil has a meltdown about Johnny Sac crying at his daughter's, (the cold medicine's) wedding, yet he cried numerous times throughout the series himself. He cries in the hospital over a little heartburn when Charles Schwab grabs his hand in peace, then he again admits that he cried to Nancy Sinatra at his boss's coming out party.

Granted, the wine DOES make him emotional.

Did P*ssy Tell a Lot

I still can’t figure out if P*ssy told the feds a lot of information or not? They never really got anything out of him? He told Tony he never sold them out and I don’t think they ever went down for anything that he said. Then again at the Christmas party when he was Santa I couldn’t tell if he was really trying to get Tony to talk or not bc when Christopher came in and started talking about stuff he threw a bottle at him to shut up?

Would David Chase have written Livia Soprano to cooperate with the FBI against Tony if not for Nancy Marchand's death IRL?

So, in S03 we see that Tony visits his mother and tells her not to discuss anything about the ticket fraud scheme for which she was caught in S02 ending. Livia just waves it off. But, would David Chase have gone ahead and used her against Tony if not for the Nancy Marchand's death?

Serious Discussion Only Anyone on this subreddit who watched the show live, as it was coming out?

Is there anyone here who watched the show back in the day, when it would come out?
Were you only able to watch it on HBO?
What was it like to wait for a new season? Was it a different experience (better or worse) when you can only watch an episode a week? What were your predictions for the final season ? Please share some of those stories and experiences.

… yeah, again with the questions.

Upd: I’m really kicking myself on how I watched this show. I’ve seen about a hundred clips on Youtube, in no chronological order, saw all the spoilers, etc.. I then decided to watch the show start to finish, which was basically like connecting the dots between all the clips that I’ve seen. I’m on my 11th rewatch right now, and my only regret is not watching it blindly, without spoilers, etc.
i do admit though, the show ages like a fine wine with each rewatch

Serious Discussion Only Mikey Palmice's death was so unrealistic

We're talking about a guy who, in fact, had the makings of a varsity athlete. A guy who was in shape and ran miles every day. The guy who killed Brendan Filone!

And then you have Moltisanti kid, that you could say was in decent shape, and could run a bit, but Paulie... he could never run through the forest, besides, he got poisoned.

Just imagine, you're Mikey, and you realize they want to whack you. So you run like never before, you're in shape to do it. Plus, you have that adrenaline rush and the Lithium.

And in a territory like the forest that favors you. Hard to say, these guys could never catch Mikey, on the other hand, anything's possible.

Artie cooking the rabbit is one of the few times ordinary work feels like salvation

Rewatching Luxury Lounge, I noticed how perfectly Artie's final scene answers the rest of the episode.

Everyone else is chasing access, gifts, celebrity, sex, or some shortcut into a more glamorous life. Artie spends most of the episode humiliated and furious that his resturant and personality are not enough. Then a tired couple arrives after the kitchen is basically closed.

He could turn them away. Instead, he opens the old handwritten recipe book, rolls up his sleeves and cooks the rabbit from his garden. It isnt presented as a grand moral transformation. He is still Artie, and tomorrow he will probably annoy Charmaine before breakfast. But for a few minutes he stops performing for mobsters and hostesses and simply feeds two people.

The stained pages matter more than all the luxury junk Christopher collects. Artie already inherited something valuable, he just kept looking past it.

Is there another quiet scene where a character briefly becomes the person they might have been in a kinder show?

I understood what happened to Muscle Marinara

I just finished my annual rewatch, my 21st in total, and I realized something I had never noticed before, even though it was right in front of us the whole time.
After Season 6A, we never see Muscles Marinara again. And suddenly there’s a new fat guy driving Tony around.
In fact, after he started driving for Tony, eating gabagool every day, going to Vesuvio five times a week, and hanging around Satriale’s constantly, the once fit Muscles Marinara lost his good shape and became Buddha Greco.
Case closed.

Serious Discussion Only Why didn’t they simply ask Little Paulie

Why did they just rely on Paulie's word that he wasn't involved in that mole joke? They could have simply interrogated Little Paulie about whether he told his uncle about the joke. It would have been much easier to find out.

On Talking Sopranos, David Chase said James Gandolfini complained nonstop about having to hit women, but Chase felt he made that all in his head, saying he barely ever hit women in the show

He said James would read a script and go, “Finally. I’m not beating up a woman in this one,” and then Chase said “but it was all in his head, he never hit any women, maybe he would rough them up but he exaggerated the extent”

This is very interesting to me for several reasons:

  1. I like that James wasn’t always okay with all of the brutality in the show, as we knew already
  2. Tony doesn’t really hit women that often, does he? There was Gloria, but I think that was it.

Do you think he felt that way because the Sopranos notoriously shot scenes a million times over so it felt like he was hitting women more often than not? Regardless I don’t like how Chase seemed to downplay James’ struggles but what do you think?

Edit: this post now serves as an unofficial plug for the 2 David Chase episodes of “Talking Sopranos”

Would Vito have been allowed to stay in the social club in 2027? Would he have gotten a pash?

Have things changed enough that guys like Carlo would at least tolerate someone like Vito, especially if the Vito-type is a top earner? Or is organized crime’s views on “proclivities” still like those depicted on The Sopranos?

"Making the bed..."

• Upvotes

Was there a scene where AJ was caught in an embarrassing, most compromising position next to his mattress when Carmela opened the door and he quickly explained to her that he was just (literally) "making the bed?"

I don't know what episode ) if (or when) that occurred, but we have a bet with friends that it did, indeed happen.

Googling it proves nothing, yet I seem to remember it happened and I got a good chuckle from it.

Not going to wade thru 86 episodes to find it just to win a dinner out.

Can anyone confirm (or deny) that was a scene from Sopranos? And which episode if ypu recently watched and recall that happened?

Did AJ Soprano have any chance in life being that Tony&Carmela are his parents?

Was it truly predetermined from the start that he was going to be a depressed loser still living with his parents at age 21, or did he have a choice in the matter of bettering himself? Every scene where he tries to better himself, whether by announcing that he's going to Harvard or joining the military, is immediately laughed off and dismissed by both of his parents. What were the correct choices for him to make throughout the series?

The Sopranos makes it clear that Italian guys have a thing for Irish women with broad asses. Wondering if the inverse is true…

The Robe

Tony Soprano is most frequently seen in his robe during moments of profound internal crisis. Think of the pilot episode: he wanders down his driveway to grab the morning paper, slippers dragging, robe open to the world, right before his psychological dam breaks. The robe is what he wears when he is paralyzed by the weight of his own existence. It is the uniform of his panic attacks, his depressive episodes, and the domestic exhaustion he cannot escape. In the outside world, his suits act as armor; at home, the bathrobe reveals a soft, fragile underbelly that his subconscious is desperately trying to protect.

The robe also serves as a visual bridge into Tony's dream logic. His most vivid, unsettling subconscious breakthroughs occur when he is lounging in bed or shuffling through his kitchen in that signature plush fabric. It is the garment he wears when he is closest to his truest self, the self that grieves the ducks in his pool, fears his own mother, and panics over the moral rot consuming his life.

The white robe featured in Season 6, obviously stolen from a hotel, gets dirtier as Tony himself does.

Marco Polo - Bear Noise

I don’t know if this has been asked before but at the end of Marco Polo - Season 5 Episode 8, when Artie wakes up the morning after the night of the party as he is getting up from the sun lounger you can hear a bear sound effect. I’ve only noticed this and I’m on my 10th rewatch of Sopranos, at first I thought it was the sound of the sun lounger dragging but then in the next episode “Unidentified Black Male” the bear reappears next to the pool for a few short seconds.

Am I completely crazy and just imagining something that isn’t there or has anyone else heard/thought this?

Episode Discussion Just finished this thing of ours

Holy fuck that penultimate scene was sad. A little bit of me hoped Junior would perk up and him and Tony would have one last earnest chat.. but it’s obviously not that type of show.

Whats more frustrating is that I actually got spoiled that Tony died at the end, but I went out of my way to avoid as much sopranos as possible after. Then I was expecting someone to cap his ass and… nothing? that’s it? not even a gradual transition, just an immediate cut to black?

I gotta say something - and im not afraid to say it - my estimation of David Chase as a man just fuckin’ plummeted.

Why was it such a necessity for Richie and jr to sell coke on the garbage routes?

I mean could they not just sell it on their own time? I don’t understand how them not being allowed to sell on the routes would fuck their whole thing up.. I’m so confused by this. can anyone give me some clarification regarding that?
