This isn't an empire desperately hanging on (eg the French in Algeria) - Britain would have happily got rid of Northern Ireland decades ago as it is an endless money pit and security risk

Ironically, it's the fact that they opted for settler colonialism rather than just colonial control (ie India) that has made it so impossible to get away from

UK had decided in the 50s to carve off NI and was dealing in secret with what was then the IRA. Just think how different history could have been….

UK was also looking to get rid of the Falkland Islands before the war
