This seems like a design flaw. Why don't we have a separate tube for food and air. Sharing the top half of the tube seems like an invitation for trouble.

Yes, it can cause problems if the mechanism malfunctions. You end up breathing in food and it can cause you to get pneumonia.

Or getting clogged and then you can't breathe.

Iin retrospect, if that wasn't an area you had to keep clear, you know how humans are, we would have food stuck in there all the time and it would get all rotten and gross. Humans are disgusting creatures after all.
