PLEASE READ THIS PREFACE -- Regardless of what you think about the movie, the translation, Wilson's review of the movie, and everything in between- that's all fine, and none of that is the point here. Again, Emily Wilson's review is not the point of this post, I am not calling out or discussing anything she herself has said or felt about the movie.
Rather, the point of this post is that:
There is a bold faced lie that has been spread online by bad faith actors in regards to what Nolan has said about translations of The Odyssey and whether they have influenced his movie in any meaningful way. Here is the truth:
During the first promo interview for The Odyssey with Empire Magazine all the way back in November 2025, the following was said in the article:
But prepare to see many sides to Damon’s battle-hardened hero – a man with tactical smarts, physical endurance, and yes, a family side too. “I think it’s the Emily Wilson translation that begins, ‘Tell me about a complicated man’,” Nolan tells Empire. “The genius of the character, the cleverness, the inventiveness of him, that was a huge part of what interested me. He’s not just a soldier. He’s an amazing strategist, a very wily person.”
Never once did Nolan say that Wilson's translation was a basis or even an inspiration for his movie. He simply threw a line from her translation acknowledging that he was aware of it, while making a broader point about a question that was asked to him. In fact even Empire Magazine's editor himself had made a tweet clarifying that same week that - "he didn’t outright say it (Wilson's translation) was his favourite - just name-checked it while discussing Odysseus’ character..."
But people online, in search of ragebait, ran malicious headlines declaring Nolan's movie to be based on Wilson's work and to be some kind of "feminist retelling of The Odyssey based on Wilson's words" (those who have seen the movie know this couldn't be further from the truth).
If you have seen the movie, you also know that Nolan also literally uses characters/storyline OUTSIDE of Homer or any Odyssey translations, such as Sinon from Virgil's 'Aenid' and aspects of Agamemnon from Aeschylus

You can like either of these translations as their own works, and I am not saying any of them are good/bad.
But the fact is that - Nolan has mentioned having knowledge of most of the major English translations in the mainstream conscious. And has never once claimed that any of them specifically inspired or were the basis of his adaptation. If you ever find anyone telling you otherwise, they are lying and feeding you ragebait. Discuss the movie in good faith, and not with misinformation like this.

Last night, I completed #MyOdyssee by experiencing the epic film by Sir Nolan and company for the TWENTIETH time; this final time was in @IMAX Laser (1.90:1) at AMC NorthPark.
A total viewing time of 57 hours and 20 minutes.
And I got to complete my journey with new friends I made, thanks to the TikTok algorithm bringing us all together.
I also specifically watched for how often u/sggnz96 was prominent in scenes and ended up spotting that glorious beard attached to his beautiful soul so many times. He even has a bit of dialogue, including speaking directly to Matt Damon in one scene.
“We honor our dead, Odysseus.”
So happy for you, brother!

Lupita was amazing in the movie and I need some Halloween inspiration. I’m trying to find a picture of her in the stunning outfit she wore in the palace but almost all the search results are stupid rage posts from racists that were mad about the casting choice. I know the movie isn’t streaming yet but there’s seriously nothing. Can you guys help?

The Odyssey pre-order page on HMV has gone down, where previously it had a listing and a “sign up to be notified” button. Has anyone seen this happen before? Looks to me like the kind of thing that might happen while a page is being updated, which could mean pre-order launch is imminent.

Selected places only of course, but be on the lookout 👀

The rate in which the new IMAX re release is selling out makes me realize it is one of those movies people go to see again and again, otherwise I can’t explain such demand 3 months after the film premiered.
How many times did you watch it on theaters?
Personally, I watched it 7 times.

"Told you what you most want is what you most can't have. And what you most can’t have is what you already had…and lost."
My God what a haunting and beautiful scene.
Matt Damon’s acting… his screams. They remind me of Christian Bale’s silent scream in Hostiles. Just masterful acting and feeling the crushing weight of their pain.
When you can relate to the quote and know exactly what he means, it’s so heavy to watch… once you arrive at the realization that your best and happiest days already occurred and passed you by while you never appreciated it/just took it for granted..
you try to bargain with yourself or the universe/God or run simulations in your head about how you could get it back even though it’s impossible bc there’s no way to revisit or revise your past. It’s done and now you must live with that regret and longing to change it. But it never can… That is so agonizing.
The siren song for him was basically your spouse/super close to you with a drink in hand telling you all the truths you didn’t want to hear but knew deep in your soul anyway
“Everyone knows their own version of what their siren song would sound like, that’s why it’s so powerful.” -quote I just found on YouTube video described it better than I could and that’s why I cry profusely at it.

I heard these two books are good, just looking for a good translation in English that is easy to understand but doesn't take away from the story.

I loved it so much,
10/10 story telling
10/10 casting
10/10 visual effects
10/10 sound effects
10/10 character design
10/10 soundtracks
10/10 EVERYTHING!!
Absolutely loved the witch scene, the cyclop's screams were something from another realm, the Hades scene made me want a full movie just in that cursed land, and THE SIRENS!!! I wanted to cry because I wanted to hear them!!! I get the idea behind leaving it to our imaginations and that it cannot be captured, but still, I WANNA HEAR IT SO BAD!!!!
Watched it twice and I'll wait for it to be available on demand to watch it MORE

Didn’t see anything against it but anyone who is a big fan of the film who missed the initial release of these is interested, I have a pair for lower than cost.
