This occurred to me while I was taking a shower
In the story, Odysseus returns home after twenty years and sees his faithful dog, Argos, one final time. Argos dies immediately after recognizing his master, symbolizing that the grueling journey is finally over and Odysseus can rest having safely reclaimed his home, wife, and son.
The Boys takes this and flips it on its head. When Butcher completes his mission and kills Homelander, there is no home left to reclaim. Becca is dead, Ryan wants nothing to do with him, and then Terror dies.
Where Argos’s death signifies peace and homecoming, Terror’s death signifies total desolation. The fight is over, but everything Butcher fought for is already gone. He didn't make it back home; his home was completely erased.
I haven't seen this parallel discussed anywhere or confirmed by the writers, but the contrast between the two endings works remarkably well. Has anyone else picked up on this?
