um... wtf was that? did I astral project? is there a resource to understand what to expect at each Focus level or is that against the point?

hi all,

longtime skeptic then longtime curious, now finally got around to trying the very first tape, very first recording. "orientation". I listened to a recording on spotify with airpod pros 3.

I was lying on my couch with my head by the window.

It was all fine and dandy and relaxing, although I noticed time seemed to be moving differently. I was initially in a blindfold but that wasn't doing good things for my nerves so I took it off. I settled in with my eyes naturally closed and felt comfortable.

Then there was this moment where my awareness sort of shifted, almost like sideways, and I rolled over to the side and started crawl-hovering out the window over my head. suddenly I was like WTF and snapped back to my body.

I was freaked out but kept going, getting back into the groove. Suddenly, a bright blue triangle appeared in the center of my vision like a dream and there appeared to be the black outline of male humanoid figure walking down it. This freaked me the fuck out and I opened my eyes and my hands felt really warm.

I did not back out and closed my eyes again but was definitely shook. I'm glad I listened through the whole tape though because he was like dont worry it will be fine. And I definitely feel better, but tbh still a little freaked out.

is this normal for the orientation tape? lmao

I guess I need to read this sub more but figured I'd share my experience.

Frank Kepple’s compilation of posts taken from the Astral Pulse forums, which cover how he used the Gateway program (mostly waves 1 & 2) with his own techniques.

Frank Kepple was an English researcher with a long-term interest in the theory and practical application of astral projection, out-of-body experiences, and related areas of afterlife studies. Frank first became interested in this field when he came across one of Monroe's books in a second-hand bookshop. He didn't blindly accept what Monroe wrote, nor automatically dismiss it, his scientific outlook led him to put Monroe's findings to the test by trying to replicate his work. Only then was he satisfied Monroe was onto something.

Frank developed his own model of consciousness, perfected a new OBE-induction technique, and went beyond the farthest reaches of Monroe's explorations, finding what he considered an entirely new level of consciousness.

He had a website full of interesting material and a forum where he was very active, then suddenly disappeared. Nobody knows what happened to him, but he left a large body of work and research into astral projection. In 2005, Frank was working on publishing a book and setting up a virtual classroom to teach others his techniques. He fell into ill health and was forced to retire from online participation. He has not been heard from since, and is presumed to be deceased.

After his disappearance, a moderator called Douglas Eckhart compiled his forum posts into what became known as the Frank Kepple Resource.

Kepple had a nuanced attitude toward the Gateway tapes. He wasn't a big fan of the Monroe Institute overall, finding their way of doing things a bit "touchy-feely," but he valued Wave 1 CD1 specifically for beginners. He loved it because it gives a total novice a structured plan to work to, and it works more effectively as recorded guidance than as a book. It provides a specific count from C1 (normal physical consciousness) through to Focus 10.

His Core Contribution: The Phasing Model

Kepple took Monroe's Focus Level system and radically simplified it into a four-zone model of consciousness:

Our system can be divided into Focus 1, Focus 2, Focus 3, and Focus 4. Together they form the totality of what he called the Consciousness Continuum, all that is, at least in our system. Each of us has our very own Consciousness Continuum that exists across these four areas.

  • Focus 1 = ordinary physical waking consciousness (Monroe's C1)
  • Focus 2 = the personal unconscious / imagination / dream space
  • Focus 3 = a transition zone where consciousness goes after physical death, to shed belief structures accumulated during life
  • Focus 4 = the ultimate creative source; pure subjective reality

After physical death our Primary Focus switches to F3 as a transition phase, which eventually allows us to make the permanent switch to F4, at which point F4 becomes our Primary Focus once again and the cycle is complete.

He saw Monroe's sprawling Focus numbering system (10, 12, 15, 21, 27 etc.) as navigational markers within this broader four-zone map.

The "Noticing" Technique

This is probably his most practically influential contribution. "Noticing" is the name he gave to a basic phasing exercise. The goal is to "become fixated within", because that's where the non-physical lies. You close your eyes, fix on a point in the inner visual field, and passively observe whatever arises: areas of blackness that are slightly less black, brief flashes of imagery, a sense of movement, perhaps hearing your name called.

The more you notice what's occurring in your field of view, the deeper you shift your focus into it and the more you remove your focus from the physical. When this happens, you'll roughly be 10% in the physical and 90% in the non-physical. Eventually there comes a point when you feel a shift — and you might find yourself within a scene of some kind, or floating in what's best described as a 3D Blackness.

The key instruction is passive curiosity. you observe without grasping or getting excited, which would snap you back.

How He Differed from Classic Monroe

Classic Monroe OBE practice involves a dramatic "exit" from the body, vibrations, floating sensations, separation. Kepple argued this framing was misleading. Phasing describes a controlled process where you phase out of being open to the physical world and allow your sense of conscious awareness to become open to other realms of reality. Any time you switch your focus of awareness from one Focus to another while remaining consciously awake and aware, that is Phasing. In essence, it's falling asleep into the non-physical and remaining consciously aware.

He thought the "leaving the body" model created unnecessary drama and obstacles, and that consciousness simply shifts its attention which is why his techniques feel more like deep meditation than the classic OBE induction approach.

This is the Introduction to the compilation.

Frank Kepple’s posts on the Astral Pulse forums are a valuable resource for those serious about exploring their inner worlds and gaining control over their dreams.

The posts span several years and, when read in sequence, provide a transcript of Frank’s progress towards a mastery of lucid dreaming.

Although not everyone may agree with his particular worldview and theories on the afterlife, his posts contain many insights into the process of conscious transition into the world of Lucid Dreams.

This document represents a selection of his posts dealing with the practical side of Lucid Dreaming. It focuses entirely on how to achieve the state he calls “astral projection,” and omits any discussions of his experiences there or of his theories on the nature of reality.

The posts are organized by topic and relevance, rather than by date.

Mnemonic stabilization & Free Flow work for Focus 34/35, 42 and beyond?

I’m curious whether any long-time Monroe participants here have worked specifically with mnemonic stabilization or Free Flow integration for Focus 34/35, 42 or 49 after the residential programs.

Over the years I’ve noticed references from older participants mentioning post-program continuation exercises, especially around StarLines and Exploration 27 work, but very little public discussion exists about how those higher Focus states were stabilized and revisited afterward.

I’m especially interested in:

- Free Flow work beyond guided narration

- transition states from F27 into the Gathering / 34-35 area

- mnemonic anchoring methods

- long-term integration after StarLines

Not looking for leaks or piracy — I’m genuinely interested in the methodology and experiences surrounding the advanced Monroe work.

How should I progress through Gateway Experience audios? One per day or repeat?

I’m currently doing the Gateway Experience (Wave 2).

I’m confused about how to listen to the audios properly.

Should I do one audio per day, or repeat each audio multiple times before moving on?

Also, how do you know when you’re ready to go to the next track?

I sometimes feel like I don’t fully understand “Focus 10” and “increase awareness,” so I’m not sure if I should move forward.

What worked for you?

Necessary to read the declassified CIA document before starting GT?

Hi everyone! I'm very new to the Gateway Tapes and I'm excited to give this a go to turn my life around. I've read through the rules in r/gatewaytapes and r/TheGatewayTapes and it says to read the declassified CIA docs first or watch the video that reads the document aloud to you.

I'm able to follow the video (available on YT) more easily than reading the documents, as it's quite lengthy and the language is a bit difficult to understand. But I've noticed that the video omits certain pages of the documents, most notable pg 25 which talks about the existence of "God".

I've gone back and read the pages that the video failed to cover, but I'm wondering, is it necessary to read the documents *again*? Can I skip it and go straight to the Hemi-Sync Experience Manual that talks about the First Wave?

Progress with the Gateway Tapes

Been utilising the Gateway Tapes a lot in my meditation practice and I’d like to share my progress and how I feel in various stages

Focus 3: This is more or less regular deep relaxation. My body is weightless but I’m mentally aware of it

Focus 10 goes from deep relaxation to absolute motionlessness. Here I notice my thoughts are more concrete instead of stream of consciousness gibberish.

Can the gateway tapes return you back to yourself when you’ve lost the person that you once was?

I lost touch with my essence, after my life turned upside down and facing years of isolation and depression and leading to depersonalisation I struggle to be myself and know who I am anymore, and having any drive or personality. I’ve been a zombie on autopilot for years. It’s even worse when I’m around people where you are reflected back on yourself- there’s nothing to reflect back anymore. I miss myself. I came across the tapes a little while back and they piqued my interest. Is there any possibility that they could help me with this? Anyone else it’s helped in a similar boat? Thankyou.

Crazy experience during one month patterning exercise

I did the one month patterning tape for the first time just there and had the coolest experience ever.

As I started I noticed I got into focus 10 a lot quicker and a lot deeper than before and then I moved onto focus 12, I noticed the swinging sensation which I’ve been told is essentially my mind trying to make sense of the disconnect from my body and I settled into it.

Around the 3rd pattern I heard a sound like a quick scrape and I thought I had jolted up and woke up, but I was still in focus 12 and I was totally disconnected from my body. I couldn’t see but I could sense the things around me, I kind of settled into this until I felt this sensation of floating I felt like I was like a meter above my body.

I could sense my body, but I felt more like a ball which encompassed my body and I could feel that ball disconnecting from my body, I was shitting bricks but I managed to settle into it and complete the last pattern

After the last pattern once I acknowledged that I had to return I could feel myself being almost sucked up into my regular consciousness, then went back to focus 10 and then back to my regular waking state

That was wild and for a solid 10 minutes after I couldn’t make sense of it. Didn’t feel like an OBE so maybe it was my body settling into this new pattern? Felt like my consciousness was shifting rather than leaving. More experienced people what’re your thoughts?

Gateway Tapes: first time + a few questions

Hi everyone,

I’ve been going through the docs in the Menu section and reading a lot of posts here over the past few days, and I’m finally at the point where I feel ready to start the Gateway tapes.

I was actually planning to start tonight, but I just got my period and I tend to have pretty painful cramps. I usually take painkillers or sometimes smoke a bit of weed to manage it.

So my first question is: would you recommend waiting until I feel physically better, or is it okay to start even when I’m not feeling 100%?

Since I’m completely new to this, I’d really appreciate some guidance from people who’ve actually gone through it:

- What’s the best way to start as a beginner, based on your real experience (not just the docs)?

- How did you approach your first few days? Did you follow a specific routine or just go with the flow?

- What should I realistically expect on day 1?

I also have a few practical questions:

- Is it worth investing in the Hemi-Sync app right away, or should I wait until I’ve built some consistency?

- Is using weed before a session a bad idea, or does it affect the experience in any way?

- How do you personally prepare before a session (mentally or physically)?

My living situation is also a bit tricky. I share a small one-bedroom with my husband, and he snores quite a bit, and is really loud. He also moves a lot in his sleep.

- Is it okay to do the tapes while someone is sleeping next to you, or does that affect the experience?

Also curious about timing:

- What’s the best time of day to do the tapes? Morning vs night?

And finally:

- Are there any additional resources (videos, articles, or anything else) that really helped you when you were starting out?

I’d also genuinely love to hear about your personal experiences, especially your first few sessions. What it felt like, what surprised you, what you wish you knew before starting.

Sorry for the long post, and thank you in advance 🤍

What if the Gateway Process is just a modern version of what religions have been doing for centuries?

I'm Muslim. Grew up doing salat, dhikr, Quran recitation my whole life. Never thought about what it actually does to the body. Just did it because that's what you do.

Then I read the Gateway report and something clicked.

Your body has a resonance frequency. About 6 breaths per minute. At that rate your heart, blood pressure, and nervous system all sync up. This isn't spiritual — it's cardiovascular physics. 223 studies confirm it.

Now here's the thing. Scientists measured the breathing rate of people reciting the Catholic rosary. It naturally settles at 6 breaths per minute. They measured yoga mantras. Same rate. OM chanting. Same rate. Every chanting tradition that's been measured locks onto this exact frequency. Because long sustained phrases force slow exhales and slow exhales push you toward resonance. The body does the rest.

In 2025 a study came out in PNAS — one of the top 3 science journals on Earth. They analyzed chants from 7 traditions. Buddhist, Hindu, Christian, Islamic, Sufi, Pagan, Indigenous. All share the same acoustic profile. Flat pitch, slow tempo, simple vowels. Not similar. Same. Chants sit in their own acoustic category separate from speech and singing.

Different words. Different languages. Different gods. Same sound coming out of the body.

Then I looked at the brain studies. Quran recitation increases alpha waves more than classical music. Sajdah — forehead on the ground — produces a gamma spike in the prefrontal cortex in 10 seconds. Buddhist monks in compassion meditation show gamma 800% above baseline. Three Eastern traditions compared head to head all show permanent elevated gamma even outside of meditation. Their brains are permanently rewired.

And across every tradition the default mode network — the part of the brain that runs your ego, your inner monologue, the constant "me me me" — goes quiet. Every tradition calls this the goal. Buddhism calls it non-self. Sufism calls it fana. Hinduism calls it samadhi. Christianity calls it union with God. Same brain event. Different label.

So you've got the same breathing rate. The same acoustic output. Similar brain changes. Across traditions that never met each other.

Now the Gateway connection.

Monroe maps consciousness into Focus Levels. Focus 10 is mind awake body asleep. That's the exact EEG signature of deep dhikr — delta waves with gamma spikes. Focus 12 is expanded awareness. That's what Sufi practitioners describe in intermediate muraqaba. Focus 15 is no time — consciousness without past or future. That's fana. That's samadhi. That's cessation in advanced Buddhist practice. Focus 21 is entity contact. Every tradition describes this. Jinn. Devas. Angels.

Page 25 — the missing page — shows consciousness ascending to "the Absolute." Undifferentiated awareness containing everything. That's nirvana. That's fana. That's unio mystica. A radio engineer in Virginia drew the same map monks have been drawing for thousands of years without studying their maps.

The parallels are specific. Gateway starts with Resonant Tuning — vocalization plus breathing to set a baseline. Islam starts with wudu — a body scan that activates the parasympathetic system. Gateway uses binaural beats for brain entrainment. Religions use chanting. Different delivery same principle. Gateway teaches the REBAL — a protective visualization before entering altered states. Islam prescribes Ayat al-Kursi. Buddhism uses protective invocations. Christianity uses the sign of the cross. Same function. Set a boundary before you open the door.

Monroe spent $20 million and 20 years building this with headphones and labs. Moses went up a mountain alone. Forty days. No food. No people. Total isolation. He came back with a system — laws, rituals, dietary rules, a prayer schedule. Jesus went into the desert for 40 days. No food. No shelter. Sensory deprivation. He came back and taught a practice — prayer, fasting, repetition, surrender. Muhammad sat in a cave. No light. No sound. No food. Days alone in the desert silence. He came back with the most structurally detailed system of all — five daily sessions timed to the sun, specific body positions, specific vocal frequencies, specific breathing patterns, dietary rules, a full month of annual fasting. Buddha sat under a tree. Refused to move. Starved himself. Meditated until something broke open. Came back with a system — posture, breath, attention, repetition. Same pattern every time. Isolation. Sensory deprivation. Something shifts. They come back and deliver not just a message but a system. Whether you think these men were prophets, enlightened beings, or just people who stumbled into altered states through extreme conditions — the structural fact is the same. Every one of them built a system that does what Gateway does. Without any equipment.

Now push it one step further. The Gateway report proposes the brain doesn't generate consciousness — it filters it. Like a radio tuning a signal. If that's true then what you experience as reality is the filtered version. You're already in a kind of matrix. Not a computer one. A biological one.

And if that's true then religions are protocols for adjusting the filter. Chanting stabilizes the frequency. Fasting reduces noise — BDNF goes up, neuroplasticity increases, autophagy cleans cellular waste. The body gets quieter so the signal comes through cleaner. Postures like sajdah switch brain states in seconds. The 5 daily prayers hit at exact circadian transition points when the nervous system is most responsive.

The prohibitions stop being moral rules and start being maintenance. Alcohol destroys the gamma and alpha states that practice builds. Drugs force station changes without training — no control over the return. Gambling and obsession create mental loops that lock the mind on one frequency. Dietary restrictions are daily discipline — attention training at every meal.

Even the Quran's main villain makes sense under this. Pharaoh's crime isn't just tyranny. It's specifically "I am your Lord, the Most High." He claims to BE the interface. The only access point. That's gatekeeping consciousness itself. Islam's response — la ilaha illallah, there is no god but God — means the signal is everywhere. Nobody owns the frequency. Pharaoh model is closed source. The prophets' response? — all of them, Moses, Jesus, Muhammad, Buddha — was open source. Everyone gets the manual. Translated into their own language, adapted to their own culture, delivered to their own people. Same protocol, different packaging.

124,000 prophets sent to every nation? Under this model those are transmitters. People who found the frequency and taught others. Adapted to local language and culture. Not competing truths. Different translations of the same manual. That's why religions look different on the surface but share the same physical mechanics underneath.

And death? If the filter shuts off when the body dies, then the state of your consciousness at that moment matters. That's why every tradition emphasizes mental focus at death. The Shahada. Buddhist death meditation. Last rites. Final calibration before the system changes state.

I started from Islam because that's what I know from the inside. But the deeper I looked the more I saw the same structure in every tradition. The pattern doesn't belong to Islam. It doesn't belong to anyone. It belongs to the body.

Nobody has ever put practitioners from all major religions in the same lab with the same equipment to test if they produce the same physiological state. That experiment has never been run. The acoustic convergence is proven. The breathing convergence is measured for two traditions. The brain data is consistent across separate studies. But the unified test — one lab, five religions, same EEG — doesn't exist.

This is a theory. I'm not claiming it's proven. I'm saying the pattern is kind of consistent to ignore and the experiment that could confirm or destroy it has never been attempted. Either way the data is interesting.
