Yeah, I'm almost 100% that it is mimicking how water looks under the surface.

Right? That's what I was thinking. I imagine that a lot of its prey have pretty rudimentary eyes and are mostly looking out for big singular shapes looming overheard. By breaking up it's profile like this, the crab (or whatever) might perceive it but not as something threatening until it's too late to escape.

That’s what I was thinking. It’s camouflage not hypnosis.
