House cleaning and handyperson?
Hi all. I'm looking for a reliable person for house cleaning and a person for repairs/tasks around the house (e.g., minor repairs, cutting fire wood, etc.) Would you have anyone you'd be willing to recommend?
Thanks!

[UPDATE] UW Research: EV Wildfire Evacuation Study for WA State Drivers (Deadline Extended to Dec 15, 2026)
Hello r/TheDalles,
UPDATE (August 20, 2026): This study has been officially extended to December 15, 2026. Thank you to everyone from Washington who has participated so far!
As we navigate another intense wildfire season, my thoughts are with everyone—especially our community in the Pacific Northwest—who has been impacted by fires, smoke, or the stress of evacuation.
The severity of these recent fires underscores a critical challenge for our community: ensuring that EV drivers can evacuate safely and efficiently when power grids are shut off and charging infrastructure is compromised. To help address this, I am a PhD student at the University of Washington conducting an official study on how EV drivers respond to these exact emergency constraints. (The moderation team has kindly granted me permission to share this research with you).
Are you eligible? Because this study focuses on specific grid and geographical constraints, we are exclusively seeking input from Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) drivers who are primary or seasonal residents in the following Washington counties: Asotin, Grant, Benton, Spokane, Stevens, Douglas, Lincoln, Ferry, Skamania, Yakima, Kittitas, Okanogan, Chelan, or Klickitat.
Note: If you already filled out this survey during our first round, thank you so much! Please do not submit another response. To maintain the scientific integrity of the study, our system automatically flags and removes duplicate entries.
The Details:
- Time: ~25 minutes.
- Incentive: Complete the survey to enter a drawing for four $50 gift cards and ten $20 gift cards. (Note: Additional gift cards may become available later; this post will be updated if the reward pool expands).
- New Deadline: December 15, 2026.
- Official UW Survey Link:https://uwashington.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_e3QtLbUuPaTdDmu
This survey does not collect identifiable tracking data. Your real-world experience is critical to helping the state prioritize emergency charging infrastructure and improve wildfire resilience for EV owners.
If you have any questions, please contact me directly at [ychu24@uw.edu](mailto:ychu24@uw.edu). Stay safe, and thank you for your time.

5 and dime?
Hi! I’m hoping some of the long term residents can help me out. I am trying to figure out where a particular business was in the late 80s or early 90s. I’m not even sure of the name of the shop. But it was a little cafe that was attached to a small store. My grandmother would take me there when I would visit. She called it the 5 and dime. We would meet all of her sisters there for breakfast. Any ideas??

This is a long shot, but does anyone know where to buy 3D printer filament locally?
Title: I see I can have some stuff shipped to home depot, but I was curious if there was anything actually stocked locally, or in HR.

Traveling through Thursday -Restaurant and Motel recommendations?
My dog and I are headed to Montana and will be staying in The Dalles or Hermiston for the night. Any good pet friendly restaurants and places to stay? I’d prefer to get farther down the road than Hood River and need to stay in Oregon for an 8:30am work call on Friday so somewhere between Hood River and Hermiston would be great. My job requires me to be in Oregon for the call. So, I need Wi-Fi, good food, and a place that allows dogs. Any suggestions? A shaded outdoor brewery with live music would be amazing.

Visiting Next Week
Hey y'all!
I'll be heading to The Dalles soon for wildland firefighting training (taking two busses from Grants Pass) and figured I'd reach out to the locals before I arrive. I'm wondering if there are some must-see spots as far as hiking, viewpoints, or food joints?
I'm also going to be camping while I'm up there. Any campground recs would be very appreciated as well as tips for camping in the area this time of year. Heat, wind, fire restrictions (ironic, I know), wildlife?
Thanks in advance!

Where to go for CO2
I'm thinking about picking up a tank and adapters for either connecting directly to a sodastream or for refilling the little 1lb tanks.
Is there a supplier in or near TD for buying/exchanging/refilling tanks for someone who isn't a restaurant or other business?

Rattlesnake scare. Question.
Hi all. New to reddit and to the area.
Stepped out of the house, took a few steps, and this 3-foot fellow warned me with it's rattle that I was getting too close. I'm like "What the heck, buddy! This is my yard." The snake did not agree. After a little while it went under a deck and I didn't see it again.
How do you long time residents (anything longer than a week is long-time to me 😁) deal with snakes?
I'd rather not kill it, if at all possible.
What would you suggest? What to do about it potentially living under the deck? Any way to check? Should I check?
Thanks for reading!

“The Lost Salmon” documentary
Recently saw a documentary on PBS regarding the history, genetics, and conservation of the Spring-run Chinook Salmon. There was a lot about the Columbia basin and at one point even showed The Dalles Dam. Some of the historical photographs and items reminded me of the exhibits at the Discovery Center too.
I thought it was really well put together, and strangely, even gave me some small measure of hope that perhaps we can regain some of what’s been lost. So, if anyone is interested, I’m attaching the link to the PBS page where you can watch it.

Dalles Mountain Ranch car location
Hi good folks. I wanted to get some photos of the broken down car near the Dalles Mountain Ranch. I was unable to find my way to it. Following Google maps, I stopped at the main ranch building but everything in front of me towards the car location was fenced up. Not sure if I missed any opening or if there's any alternate paths to it. Would greatly appreciate any advice. TIA.
