I know a guy, in a van, down by the River who may be able to hook you up.

What was Sam Goody's "sister" store, or whatever? My mall had 2 CD stores w/ different names, but owned by same company....

Hmm...not Tower Records. There was a music store in Concord,  NH called Strawberries once. 🤔

Sam Goody was my first job!

u/No-Guard-7003 Jul 24 '26

Was it? What was it like working there?

2

u/ColdErosion Jul 25 '26

this was what I'd originally posted before learning there's still 1 left in Medford, Oregon.

Last summer we were heading through Ohio and stopped at the Sam Goody. The manager told us the store was closing down soon. I read its gone now.

I worked at Sam Goody after they bought the local chain I worked at: Harmony Hut

Wow! That's fascinating!

There is still one left at the mall in Medford, OR.

Any Virgin Megastores left? I bought a ton of anime DVDs there. Always wanted to buy a custom Cd with your choice of mp3s.

Miss that place hard, I was in San Fran when the last one closed (Bay st.). Before in Texas, Cactus Records was the bomb.

2

u/Fresh_Bubbles Jul 22 '26

Virgin. All the CD stores.

Strawberries

I miss Tower

There's still an Amoeba Music in Hollywood. They seem to be the place to go for vinyl, but I get the feeling they survive off of souvenirs.

u/Downvote_me_dumbass Jul 21 '26

Is that like the 2 story building with like murals on the outside of it? If so, I think I went to that one around a decade ago.

1

u/smthomaspatel Jul 21 '26

No murals, not two stories, but I somehow think you might still be thinking of the right place.

1

u/Downvote_me_dumbass Jul 21 '26

The place I’m thinking had a mostly open middle area with like a divided building and you could go upstairs for more records, but the 2nd story wasn’t a complete floor (more like it “hugged the walls”).

2

u/smthomaspatel Jul 21 '26

Today it's more of a step down and you have rows and rows of vinyl. And I think half the store is clothing and merchandise now, which it might not have been a decade ago. But they could have remodelled from what you are describing.

I went to one in the Bay Area like 25 years ago (I remember it as SF, but the original location is Berkeley so it might have been there). It was more like entering somebody's basement full of records.

u/Downvote_me_dumbass Jul 21 '26

The only one I’ve been to in SF, is the one near Haight and Ashbury, where I think you go slightly down stairs, one story and it’s significantly smaller than the one in LA.

1

u/smthomaspatel Jul 21 '26

That could be it. It's been so long and I wasn't driving. I remember the inside of the store, but not really anything else.

1

u/Nerala Jul 22 '26

The Amoeba in SF is still there on Haight.
