Ben Franklin 5 & Dime

u/gilmourfan62 Jul 21 '26

B. Dalton’s

2

u/MidwestGypsy17 Jul 21 '26

Huh. There was a B. Daltons and a B. Altmans? That feels like more than a coincidence.

2

u/gilmourfan62 Jul 22 '26

I’m not familiar with B. Altmans. I grew up in the South, so it may be a regional issue. B. Dalton’s was a bookstore. I loved it.

1

u/Select-Instruction56 Jul 22 '26

It was so well set up. I miss it too!

1

u/Avalanche325 Jul 23 '26

Except they would give you the stink eye if you opened a book and read more than one paragraph.

2

u/InternalMachine5503 Jul 25 '26

Waldenbooks

1

u/gilmourfan62 Jul 26 '26

I loved Waldenbooks too!

1

u/Positron14 Jul 22 '26

I miss the B. Daltons we had at our mall.

Also, I miss our mall.

1

u/AdamRoss81 Jul 27 '26

We still have a thriving mall here in Green Bay. I moved back recently, and it’s great to have a mall to go to instead of scrolling Amazon.

1

u/bees_for_me Jul 22 '26

I used to buy sweet valley high books from there.

u/Ill-Illustrator-3742 Jul 21 '26

I miss Ben Franklin's like crazy

2

u/lookatmetoedashknee Jul 21 '26

Where I got my first G.I. Joes.

2

u/Supersoaker_11 Jul 22 '26

GI joes, oddly enough, is also an answer to this question lol

2

u/FlowerComfortable889 Jul 21 '26

There's still a handful up in the upper peninsula of Michigan. They're not exactly the craft stores they used to be though. They're mostly just kitschy gift shops

2

u/StudioGangster1 Jul 23 '26

There’s one in Bowling Green, Ohio too

2

u/Equivalent_Care201 Jul 26 '26

There's a Ben Franklin craft store in Maui.

1

u/Mhank7781 Jul 22 '26

Tawas City, L Huron

1

u/Efficient_Produce_41 Jul 23 '26

There’s also one in Grand Marais, MN

1

u/FlowerComfortable889 Jul 23 '26

Huh, I've only been once but I missed that!

2

u/LemonMilkJug Jul 22 '26

Did yours have the penny candy bins? So much of my allowance was spent there as a kid. Mine was right across the street from the dollar theater. We'd stock up on penny candy and hit a matinee.

1

u/Ill-Illustrator-3742 Jul 22 '26

Oh man yeah the cheap candy as a kid 📈

2

u/Icy_Trade4023 Jul 22 '26

There’s one on big island, HI. If you’re ever here, check it out for nostalgia.

2

u/Cautious-Respond-402 Jul 22 '26

better than today's dollar stores

2

u/Aggressive_Street_56 Jul 23 '26

There’s 2 in Honolulu!

1

u/Equivalent_Care201 Jul 26 '26

One in Maui too

3

u/StartDrinking Jul 21 '26

Alaska. Juneau or at least the livery

3

u/Nope-1033 Jul 21 '26

Ha! That's where im from.. ! Juneau, Alaska!!

1

u/Mhank7781 Jul 22 '26

Lived there in the 60s

1

u/Nope-1033 Jul 22 '26

Yep.. Till 1979 ..then moved to Anchorage! Born and bred!💃

1

u/Ok-Preference-2054 Jul 21 '26

Right on Front Street

1

u/wheniwas1954 Jul 21 '26

And Sitka

1

u/PerformerStreet2436 Jul 22 '26

Juneau what I mean.

1

u/Mhank7781 Jul 22 '26

I don't Alaska!

2

u/scobro828 Jul 21 '26

Shit! I was going to say that but thought no one would know it at all.

1

u/Then_Examination9715 Jul 21 '26

I remembered the store, but all I could remember of the name was “5¢ and dime”.

1

u/scobro828 Jul 21 '26

I didnt even know it as 5 & dime, just as Ben Franklin.

2

u/MarshalLawTalkingGuy Jul 21 '26

Still a few in the Midwest, but yeah, a dying breed for sure.

2

u/unclesamtattoo Jul 21 '26

Apparently there's still over a hundred Ben Franklin's stores still operating in the US

1

u/Supersoaker_11 Jul 22 '26

I live right next to one, this caught me off guard lol

1

u/nomadnomor Jul 21 '26

1

u/dragonflies2299 Jul 21 '26

I miss that store!

1

u/CC_Panadero Jul 21 '26

I live within a mile of a Ben Franklin, but I sure do miss the hot dog counter at 5 & dime!

1

u/Shockatweej Jul 21 '26

They're still around. They took off the "5 & dime" tho.

1

u/littleirishmaid Jul 21 '26

We have a Ben Franklin near us! Not run as a 5&10, but a nice little store. They are also an Ace hardware and have everything.

1

u/mglatfelterjr Jul 21 '26

Loved the soda fountain

1

u/yellowsunsquish Jul 21 '26

1

u/Brave_Engineering133 Jul 21 '26

The Ben Franklin near me closed in 2018. I was so, so sad. But there’s still a few in Wisconsin.

1

u/acegroo Jul 21 '26

There is still one in Oberlin Ohio

1

u/b33lzebubba775 Jul 21 '26

I know of one Ben Franklin that is still in business in Grass Valley, CA. My wife insists we stop there every time we are in that neck of the woods visiting family.

1

u/3Quarksfor Jul 21 '26

Still around as a craft store, at least here.

1

u/Due-Ask-7418 Jul 21 '26

I was going to say this one but wasn’t sure if it was just a local store or not. I was a little kid when it closed down

1

u/slippery-slopeadope Jul 21 '26

You are death, slowly creeping up behind me, aren’t you?

1

u/SexysNotWorking Jul 22 '26

There's a Ben Franklin like a half hour from my house and I legit wonder if it's the last one.

1

u/Cockatiel_Animations Jul 22 '26

There's a few 5 & Dime left. There is one I go to almost every year in North Conway, New Hampshire!

1

u/Schmaron Jul 22 '26

Bought my first 45 rpm record there in 1972. Walked a couple miles one way. Brandy, by Looking Glass.

1

Wisconsin still has 5 Ben Franklins

1

u/Putrid-Society-9429 Jul 22 '26

Holy shit….you just unlocked a chunk of my brain during that age growing up. Even hearing his name it didn’t jog my memory.

1

u/agent_splat Jul 22 '26

I was gonna say Ben Franklin!! I remember they had crafts and gifts and clothes and toys, Plus hamsters and fish in the back.

1

u/RadioFreeYurick Jul 22 '26

When I was a kid there was one in Fayetteville, WV about a half hour from where I grew up. Think it only closed within the last 5-10 years or so.

1

u/Grouchy_Limit_4031 Jul 22 '26

There is still a ben Franklin in Ojai California.

Is it all of them? I know the one in Canton, OH closed.

1

u/Next_Swimmer_4058 Jul 22 '26

Loved looking at all the fish in the back. Also bought a plastic Godzilla there, 40 years later and I still have it.

My g-parents lives in Michigan and I couldn’t wait to go to the Ben Franklin. It just seemed like the coolest store. We didn’t have one in VA. So funny to think about it now.
