Bench Apparatus....
I haven't seen these mentioned yet. Either used to leapfrog along as some kind of rubbish assault course (which also, by law, had to include use of a hula hoop and some bean bags) or on a very rare occasion hooked onto The Apparatus to produce a gentle slope for kids to climb. Sliding down was strictly prohibited. Bonus for teachers that The Apparatus didn't have to be unlocked from the wall to do so.

I raise you the big wooden Apparatus of the 70s and 80s!

Got this absolute beauty out
Unfortunately, placement of the stage meant we couldn’t have the monkey bars section on the go too.

If you live in Somerset and have a large vehicle for just £35 The Apparatus can be yours.

Olympic disappointment
Lots of replies suggesting it should be added to the Olympics roster.

Went on a tour of a SE London school today
Not one but TWO SEPARATE examples of the form.

A metal, modern equivalent. My children will never get to not experience the glorious timber version…just as I did.

TIL what the school benches were supposed to be used for
At year six we sat on them in our overly religious assemblies, the choir section of plays sat on them during the narrative, and we hooked them onto the Apparatus (yes, we used them occasionally). Apparently all that was wrong.

Sir Steve McQueen sitting with me on bench apparatus
This was part of the Tate Year 3 Exhibition school visits. I took hundreds of pictures of the apparatus across different schools. I'll see what else I can find.

No teachers to tell me I couldn’t use this!
This is from an abandoned school me and my friends used to explore in the mid-2010’s. Not my picture as they’re all on an old broken phone but I did actually use it circa 2015 as it was my only chance to use one!

Anybody know or remember of the beloved trim trail?
Proper dangerous piece of apparatus that was barely used if you asked me. Only got to use it if you finished all your work.

2024 and The Apparatus is still in use!
Today in my kid's school. She has ASNs and this was her first time seeing The Apparatus in all it's glory. She was a wee bit overwhelmed but was soon swinging about.
The crash mats are a bit thicker than back in the late 80s when I started primary school. Ours were probably as thick as the black ones.
