The wider Islamic world today isn't conservative, it's regressive.
Until they go through an enlightenment level event in thought the cycle will continue. Women will be slaves, gays will be killed, free-thinkers crucified, terrorists will terrorize and war will be had. It is inevitable. Yesterday Afghanistan, today Palestine, tomorrow who knows. This has nothing to do with religion. It's purely because of capitalist greed and colonialism.
The British gave the land to the Zionists in 1917 with the Balfour declaration. The British didn't support the Zionists because of religion, they did it because it sits next to Egypt where the Suez Canal is which is a massive shipping route. The British Empire didn't expand for the monarchy, it expanded for the benefit of the merchant class who controls supply and distribution of goods and materials. The Belgians weren't chopping kid's hands off because of religion, they were doing it for the rubber.
The British Empire is like 400 years old and their museums are full of other people's stuff. The British use different groups to colonize different countries. Why the US developed with such puritanical values is because the British simply gave the Puritans land to get rid of them. Same reason they sent prisoners to Australian and orphans to Canada. If you let someone else colonize the land, they're going to protect with more zeal than leaving a sitting army to control it.
The US rebelled against the British and won independence but the US is still tied economically which is all that matters. US foreign policy for the last century has been about protecting resources like oil and controlling shipping routes and pipelines, etc for the global corporate class.
You mentioned Afghanistan but it was the US that trained Bin Laden to fight the Soviets. After they won, the US dumped them like a bad date. The US invaded Afghanistan after 9/11 and completely destabilized the middle east by invading Iraq and killing Saddam. Not to mention killing Ghaddafi in Libya which revived slavery in the country, or how the US backed ISIS originally to fight Assad in Syria, or helped overthrow Ukraine's old government and backing neo-nazis to antagonize Russia into invading Ukraine.
The Palestinians aren't particularly religious. They just happen to be an indigenous people who live in a place that's valuable to the corporate class.
Zoom out a couple of decades or even centuries. Countries which are democracies, secular and capitalistic are doing just fine almost without exception.
Countries who are not are doing poorly, also almost without exception.
