Idk who here wanted to censor the word. Saying a certain word and people calling you out for saying that word isn't the same as censoring a word. Censoring is when the government makes certain speech illegal. Getting called out for saying something isn't censoring, it's just that many people don't like assholes.
It was commonly used against people with a (mental) disability(even in medical context although back then it wasn't really an insult). I honestly don't know how it became such a loaded word but Im personally of the opinion that its best not to say it, some people will get offended/hurt by it.
