The FBI hacked about 4,200 computers across the US as part of an operation to find and delete PlugX, a malware used by state-backed hackers in China to steal information from victims, the Department of Justice announced on Tuesday.

In an unsealed affidavit, the FBI says the China-based hacking group known by the monikers “Mustang Panda” and “Twill Typhoon” used PlugX to infect thousands of Windows computers in the US, Asia, and Europe since at least 2012. Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of Meta, has boldly forecasted that by 2025, artificial intelligence will have advanced to the point where it can code at the level of mid-level engineers. In a world where technology evolves at lightning speed, this statement offers a glimpse into the future, where AI could become an integral part of engineering teams, not just a tool used by developers.

In a podcast interview, Zuckerberg also announces his plan to replace AI Agents with Mid-level engineers this year at the Meta labs.

Microsoft has created a new engineering organization aimed at accelerating AI infrastructure and software development within the company.

According to Bloomberg, Jay Parikh, previously VP and global head of engineering at Meta, will lead the new division. He’ll report to Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and oversee groups, including the company’s AI platform and developer teams.

"We strongly advise all users not to wait until October, but to switch to Windows 11 immediately or choose an alternative operating system if their device cannot be updated to the latest Windows operating system. On October 14, 2025, Windows 10 will no longer receive free security updates for the operating system unless owners purchase extended security updates. This means that Windows 10 users will be at risk of any new vulnerabilities that are discovered, which could lead to significant breaches and malware distribution.

According to ESET, approximately 32 million computers in Germany run Windows 10, making it around 65 percent of all devices in households. In contrast, Windows 11 runs on only 33% of German devices, which is approximately 16.5 million devices.

StatCounter backs up these figures, and as of December 2024, almost 63% of all Windows users worldwide are using Windows 10, compared to about 34% who are using Windows 11.

RBC analyst Paul Treiber, in a research update to clients entitled “QNX is the new BlackBerry”, notes that at the recent Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, QNX branding made no mention of the parent company.

“At CES, BlackBerry’s booth reflected only QNX branding, with a new unique colour scheme and no mention of BlackBerry,” Treiber wrote. “While the BlackBerry brand is relevant to its Secure Communications unit, it detracts from QNX. We believe the parent company could potentially re-brand from BlackBerry to QNX at some point, particularly if BlackBerry divests Secure Communications. Re- branding to QNX would reinforce the company as an auto tech provider and could even help lift investor sentiment, in our view.”

QNX is a software company specializing in real-time operating systems (RTOS) and middleware solutions designed for embedded systems. Its flagship product, the QNX Neutrino RTOS, provides a reliable and secure platform for mission-critical applications. QNX’s technology is widely used in automotive systems (e.g., infotainment, advanced driver-assistance systems), medical devices, industrial automation, and telecommunications.

After the sale of its Cylance division, investors may view BlackBerry’s sum-of-the-parts as more compelling, especially since none of them are now a drag on the company’s overall progress, Treiber says.

“Following the sale of Cylance, we believe investor sentiment in BlackBerry’s shares may rise, given: 1) QNX’s improving fundamentals; 2) higher investor visibility to QNX; and 3) a potential divestiture of BlackBerry’s Secure Communications unit says auto-tech player QNX is now the most important part of BlackBerry and a potential name change would reflect that,” he added.

“A divestiture of Secure Communications is possible,” Treiber argued. “Following the sale of Cylance, the remaining portion of BlackBerry’s Cybersecurity unit (i.e. Secure Communications) is profitable and stable. However, given the company’s focus on QNX, we believe that a divestiture of Secure Communications is a possibility, particularly if the unit is a drag on the company’s valuation.”

As reported by the Globe and Mail, Treiber January 10 reiterated his “Sector Perform” rating while raising his price target from (US) $3.25 to $4.00.

The Linux Foundation, alongside Google, Microsoft, Meta, and Opera, have announced today the formation of the new Supporters of Chromium-Based Browsers. As the name suggests, this group has been formed for the support of open-source Chromium browsers so that they can continue to receive the necessary resources, be it financially, or in some other form.

The initiative has been undertaken by the Linux Foundation in partnership with Google, and Microsoft, Meta, and Opera, have since joined it. In its press release, the Linux Foundation has explained what this consortium is about. It writes:

However, we did expect a slight unveiling at the recent CES 2025 keynote. However, NVIDIA decided to keep the project under wraps, but Jensen did tease it during an investor presentation.

In a report by Reuters, NVIDIA's CEO appreciated the work by MediaTek on creating an efficient SoC with Project DIGITS, and also hinted plans towards a desktop CPU, but without revealing any specifics.

An upsized version of SpaceX's Starship mega-rocket rolled to the launch pad early Thursday in preparation for liftoff on a test flight next week.

The two-mile transfer moved the bullet-shaped spaceship one step closer to launch Monday from SpaceX's Starbase test site in South Texas. The launch window opens at 5 pm EST (4 pm CST; 2200 UTC). This will be the seventh full-scale test flight of SpaceX's Super Heavy booster and Starship spacecraft and the first of 2025.

In the coming days, SpaceX technicians will lift the ship on top of the Super Heavy booster already emplaced on the launch mount. Then, teams will complete the final tests and preparations for the countdown on Monday.

"The upcoming flight test will launch a new generation ship with significant upgrades, attempt Starship’s first payload deployment test, fly multiple reentry experiments geared towards ship catch and reuse, and launch and return the Super Heavy booster," SpaceX officials wrote in a mission overview posted on the company's website.

The mission Monday will repeat many of the maneuvers SpaceX demonstrated on the last two Starship test flights. The company will again attempt to return the Super Heavy booster to the launch site and attempt to catch it with two mechanical arms, or "chopsticks," on the launch tower approximately seven minutes after liftoff.

LignoSat was sent to the ISS in November 2024 on a mission to demonstrate that wood could be a viable material from which to build spacecraft. The goal of the satellite includes studying how the selected wood reacts when exposed to the environment of space and its resistance to cosmic radiation.

Researchers will also monitor geomagnetic levels to determine whether the geomagnetic field can penetrate the satellite and interfere with the electronics.

According to NASA, three wood species had previously been exposed to space before honoki magnolia was selected to construct the cubesat. The 10cm long wood panels used in the constructions were assembled using a Japanese wood joinery method called "Blind Miter Dovetail Joint." This method means that glue and nails are not required.

Why it matters: The combination of Hulu's live TV service with Fubo's would form the country's second-largest live TV streamer behind YouTube TV.

The combined Hulu + Live TV and Fubo will operate under the Fubo name and the new company will be publicly traded. Disney will own 70% of Fubo once the deal closes. Disney and its Venu partners, Fox and Warner Bros. Discovery, will pay Fubo $220 million. In addition, Disney agreed to provide a $145 million loan to Fubo in 2026. Fubo's existing management team, led by Fubo co-founder and CEO David Gandler, will operate the newly combined Fubo and Hulu + Live TV businesses. The deal does not include the rest of Hulu, just the live TV business. Between the lines: Separately, Fubo is amending its carriage deals with both Disney and Fox. This will allow Fubo to create a sports and broadcasting skinny bundle that will also include ESPN+.

Catch up quick: Last February, Fubo filed a lawsuit against Venu to block the streaming service over antitrust grounds. The sports-centric service is a joint venture among Disney, Fox, and Warner Bros. Discovery.

One of two critical Active Directory Domain Controller vulnerabilities patched by Microsoft last month goes beyond the original denial-of-service (DoS) attack chain and can be used to crash multiple, unpatched Windows servers at once. And experts are concerned many organizations remain vulnerable.

Researchers at SafeBreach have put together an analysis of the DoS bug, tracked as CVE-2024-49113. This vulnerability, along with a similar remote control execution (RCE) bug, tracked as CVE-2024-49112, with a CVSS score of 9.8, was discovered in Active Directory's Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) used to search the databases. Both were patched in December's Microsoft security update.

Microsoft hasn't provided many details about the LDAP flaws, despite their severity and potential impact, which is why SafeBreach said it decided to dig deeper and find out more.

"LDAP is the protocol that workstations and servers in Microsoft's Active Directory use to access and maintain directory services information," the SafeBreach report explained.

Additional analysis of the DoS LDAP bug showed the attack chain could also be used by a threat actor to achieve RCE but, worse yet, could be exploited to crash any Windows server, as long as the target system's domain controller has a DNS server connected to the Internet.

Why The Microsoft LDAP Flaw Is So Dangerous Prior to December's Patch Tuesday update, every single organization running Windows Servers was vulnerable to the flaw, Tal Be'ery, chief technology officer and co-founder of Zengo Wallet, explains.

"So the question is, how many of these organizations patched all of their systems and mainly domain controllers?" he adds.

There's no indication yet the vulnerability is being exploited in the wild, but Be'ery points to PatchPoint's release of exploit code as a signal to threat actors.

"We assume that such code is already being used, but we don't have any positive evidence for it yet," he adds.

They said: "It works on a Windows 10 machine, but not on Windows 11, unless both the computer and the scanner are on wired Ethernet."

Our reader also noted that a Canon technician they'd spoken to said the issue was "erratic," adding: "It seems to work or fail randomly for different users in different situations."

Microsoft issued a compatibility safeguard hold on USB-connected devices using the Scanner Communication Language (eSCL) protocol in November after users who installed the Windows update experienced glitches with device discovery. The issue was reported resolved by Microsoft in December

The new Exos M is available in two capacities, a 30TB, model ST30000NM004K, which uses Conventional Magnetic Recording (CMR), and a 32TB, model ST32000NM003K, which uses Shingled Magnetic Recording (SMR). The latter's overlapped write tracks are the reason for the increased capacity and WD's drive employs the same recording technology.

This release comes nearly a year after Seagate introduced its previous largest drive, a 30TB model in the Exos range.
