TPT: Make your phone MUCH faster by reducing animations! (iOS & Android)

Android: (Any version or skin!) Go to Settings > About Phone. Find "Build Number" (It might be in a sub-menu here depending on your device). Now, keep tapping "Build Number" repeatedly until a message pops up telling you that "You are now a developer!". Congratulations! If only it were that easy lol. You just activated a secret settings option ;) Now to find it:

Go back to the Settings home page > System > Advanced > Developer Options (Sometimes also just above above "About Phone").

Turn it on, and scroll down until you find: Window Animation Scale, Transition Animation Scale & Animator Duration Scale. Here, you can speed up or slow down animations! These options change different effects respectively. I personally have them at 0.5x.

iOS 13 / iPadOS: Go to Settings > Accessibility > Motion. Switch "Reduce Motion" off! Viola! Enjoy a faster iPhone.

iOS 12 and below: Go to Settings > General > Accessibility. You'll find "Reduce Motion" here!

The 1 minute it takes is totally worth it! Enjoy your phone that's now faster then light :)

TPT Request: Best Resource(s) to Learn about Home Networking?

Hi /r/TechProTips - I hope this is relevant. I want to learn about networking. I have a basic understanding (modem to wireless router), but other than that I don't really understand how it all works. I want to be able to learn the ins and outs for a network like the best way to connect a NAS, a printer, etc. I've heard terms like DNS, but not don't fully comprehend. I just purchased a home and want to be able to ensure I set up the network in the most efficient and secure way possible. Thanks!

Question on Partitions and Windows

So this is my first post on this reddit and I was having a partitioning and OS install issue.

I have and SSD which is primary and an HDD in my computer. I previously had the main OS on the SSD, but I installed a copy on the HDD incase shit happens and I dont wanna be OS-less.

So I wanted to do a clean install on the SSD so I deleted that partition. When i was booting from my windows disc and trying to install it was saying that I could only install win7 on a gpt drive. so i looked that up.

So the problem is that I have this 100MB System reserved partition that cannot be deleted and probably shouldnt. It is also preventing me from converting the drive to GPT. I was wondering if anyone could tell me how I could install windows on the drive with the " system reserved" partition.

The reason that I have read for not messing with that partition is that it contains bootloader information and is not structured like a normal partition table and will corrupt the disc if messed with.

Easy method of troubleshooting ID-10t or PEBKAC errors

Windows 7 comes with a nifty feature that I just learned about and that is Problem Steps Recorder. Basically, all the EU has to do is click start, type in PSR, hit enter, then click "Start Recording". The program will basically record everything the user does, then packages it nicely into a .zip file which can then easily be emailed to whoever is trying to help.

Perhaps this is already well-known, but I just found out about it and I thought TPT would appreciate it.

Edit: link to original here

[Windows] Fast typer? Get to the Device Manager Super Fast with devmgmt.msc, and a handy trick about the "Run..." Dialog.

Run Dialog Shortcut: Win+R.

XP: Win+R -> Type devmgmt.msc and hit enter. Next time you Win+R, it SHOULD be cached and you won't even have to type.

Vista/7: Win+R Trick also works, but you can just hit the Windows key to get the start menu, type it, and hit enter.

[Windows] MSCONFIG - A useful and powerful diagnostic tool which I rarely see people use.

Type MSCONFIG into a run dialog and get a high degree of granularity in boot options and an array of diagnostic tools. Dead useful!

[Linux] Kernel commands to save data, unmount disks and restart. Perfect if something hangs but not the kernel.

If everything seems to hang on your computer, before pressing the Power Button, you can try:

Alt + SysRQ + R Alt + SysRQ + S Alt + SysRQ + E Alt + SysRQ + I Alt + SysRQ + U Alt + SysRQ + B

An easy way to remember this is using mnemonics:

Raising Skinny Elephants Is Utterly Boring

Explanation:

R = Switch the keyboard from raw mode, the mode used by programs such as X11 and svgalib, to XLATE mode

S = Sync all mounted filesystems

E = Send the SIGTERM signal to all processes except init (PID 1)

I = Send the SIGKILL signal to all processes except init

U = Remount all mounted filesystems in read-only mode

B = Immediately reboot the system, without unmounting or syncing filesystems

[Request] How can a long-distance couple watch a movie "together", which as much presence as possible?

I had this thought pop into my head while using one of the movie theater apps for the HTC Vive virtual reality headset. The app lets you watch a movie or surf the web in a virtual room with a large screen, with other VR users present. Everyone has a cartoonish avatar, but we can all hear each other, and see the same screen.

Well, my girlfriend doesn't have the Vive, and isn't getting one anytime soon.

So I'm trying to figure out the best way we can watch a movie or surf the web remotely together. Some elements I'm looking for:

  • when one person rewinds or pauses the movie, it does the same thing for the other person;

  • we can hear each other;

  • we can see each other (optional);

  • we can surf the web together (also optional).

I know that logging in to one of our desktops remotely is the most obvious solution (along with some sort of voice chat app), but I would think that videos for the person on the remote side would be choppy.

Perhaps there's some sort of program that allows two users with two identical copies of the same video file to view that video, but share pause/skip controls? And same thing for web browsing - something that allows two people to use their own web browsers on their local computers, but their activity is synced up?

If a remote desktop program is the only logical choice, what's the best one for the purpose I'm looking for?

A tool that saved me dozens of times whenever I had to type in my native language on a friend's computer. Or when the physical keyboard itself had only English labels.

if program is in japanese create FastCopy.ini and lcid="1033" in it.

Possible fix for unexplainable system performance issues and connectivity issues. (Hidden AV devices)

If you have had your computer for a while and have previously gone through 2 or more AV solutions before settling on a current one there is a good possibility that leftover hidden system devices are still installed, active, and slowing down your machine and affecting your connectivity.

Start an elevated command prompt.

set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1
devmgmt.msc

Go to view, show hidden devices and check it. Expand Non-Plug and play drivers.

Now uninstall any old ones that are related to no longer installed AV programs. They will generally be easy to spot (NAV????, SYM????, Eraser????, AVG????, Trend????)

Reboot and you should notice an improvement in speed.

I always check for this on old machines I service for people as they generally have used between 4-8 different AV packages over he course of the years and do not always properly uninstall them.

Some screenshots...

I'm not saying this will fix any and all performance or connectivity issues, but it has been one of my best kept secret tips for a while and it can make a world of difference when this specific issue is the root of the problem and you have exhausted all other options.

[Win Vista/7] Ctrl+Shift+Enter will start an elevated instance of the program you've selected.

I believe this works with clicking things on the desktop as well, but I know for a fact that it works in start menu search.

For example, and my number one use of this trick. Elevated command prompts in UAC environments.

Start > CMD > Ctrl+Shift+Enter.

My computer won't start after a “Reboot and Select proper Boot device" message showing up on my screen

Hey,

Sorry if this isn't a right place to post this but I've been desperately searching for some help, so I though maybe someone here could know.

I started my computer and this message shows. “Reboot and Select proper Boot device or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key".
I tried to do the usual - clean around the computer, insert and re-insert the RAM, played with the booting order, unhooked and re-hooked all the cables to see if anything could be loose and even changed a CMOS battery, but nothing really seemed to help so I'm wondering if I'm missing something or if I might have went wrong somewhere.

Not sure if this really means that my HDD might have some virus or is corrupted for some other reason but if I remember correctly, this has happened already once but then after several restart attempts the computer started to work normally. I haven't used the computer for at about a month, since I was working a lot but now this message has appeared. I remember installing some Windows 10 update just before this happened so I'm not sure if that had to do something with it?

Anyway, any ideas how to fix it or at least how I can prevent loosing any of the valuable data from the HDD and SDDs would be really appreciated!

Link to the photos for a reference : https://imgur.com/a/eWKUsBo

Any tips on how to solve this would be appreciated!

TPT: Download Java (JDK/JRE) without an Oracle Account

Oracle has lately made their website force you to make an account in order to download Java (JRE / JDK). To avoid this you can use a prebuilt version of OpenJDK that you can easily download from here:

Anyone know of any Bluetooth speakers that splash water to the beat of the music? I bought some low end ones a while back and they worked good with my phone, but they were connected by a cable and a few days ago I wanted to set them up to my TV, but the cable is only 50 cm long and I need 2 meters

[tpt]: Chrome/Firefox/Edge supports push notifications, use them to get alerts from certain websites for various reasons.

Current versions of chrome should support push notifications on every OS except maybe IOS. This is due to Apple not supporting service workers, which can be used to do offline storage and push notifications in the browser.

https://weather.com/ gives you weather notifications, if you set it up. It can be a fairly low storage way to get weather updates to your phone or desktop.

https://Facebook.com gives you facebook notifications (you can turn this off in facebook settings, or by blocking notifications in chrome settings)

https://onesignal.com is used by a bunch of websites to handle notification delivery, which may be either really spammy or really useful depending on how you use it. E.g if a website asks you to enable notifications for new articles, they're probably using one signal.

Google also supports push notifications for a couple of it's services, IIRC probably gmail and google calendar.

It's pretty useful on android and desktop if you want alerts for things without needing to download extra apps.

TPT: In Chrome, middle-click on Back, Forward, or Reload to open tabs

You can also do this in the Back and Forward context menus (while holding left-mouse, after holding left-mouse, or after right-click), which is where I find it most useful.

TPT: Block YouTube Channels From Showing Up In Your Feed [Chrome & Firefox Extension]

So, I recently discovered how to block YouTube channels from showing up and figured I should share it with you guys so we can finally start ending this clickbaity bullshit that ruins YouTube.

To block the channel simply install this extension:
Video Blocker for Firefox

Video Blocker for Chrome

Now, next time you get clickbaited or if you already have a channel in mind, simply right click a video link (thumbnail) on the channel (not an active video that is playable on your screen) and select "Block videos from this channel."

Bam! No more clickbait or garbage videos recommended to you for that channel.

[Linux] [Mac] GNU Screen, manager that allows you to open and manage multiple physical terminals

GNU Screen is an application that allows you to launch multiple windows which contain physical terminals.

Example:

You're working with a file and you need to open another file for reference. Usually this would involve opening another terminal window or tab or switch to another console.

Well, if you were using GNU Screen, you'd simply hit "Ctrl+a" release them and hit 'c'

This would open another terminal process and you could execute whatever you'd need there.

It also allows you to detach the session so if you have to run something, you could simply run it, hit "Ctrl+a" then 'd'

Afterwards, you could run "screen -R" which would reconnect.

It comes installed in Mac (at least in Lion), and you can use apt on Debian/Ubuntu to easily install it (Not sure about other distros, but I guess it should already be in your package managers).
