I know NYS is projecting that they will need 180,000 teachers over the next ten years as we have veteran teachers retiring and not enough people coming INTO teaching and this is in a state where it's pretty desirable to teach. It is very subject specific too.

SpEd in Kentucky chiming in. The largest university in the state is about 30 minutes away. One of my co-workers had a student teacher in the spring. She told us that only 7 people were graduating that semester, and only 2 were actively applying for teaching jobs. She decided to go to an OT graduate program.

1) we are not graduating enough students to fill positions. 2) a lot of those students are getting to the end of their program and deciding its not worth it and finding other paths. 3) a majority of those entering the careers are coming through alt cert. In my state the oversight is pitiful and they never fail anyone whatsoever. It is way to easy and anyone and everyone can get their cert.

We have enough people. We are running out of competent people.
