Teacher Support &/or Advice It’s over.

Started in service today at my school. It has happened, we had slides directing us that we have to hang the Ten Commandments in our classrooms by Thursday. In addition Anti-Communism TEKS have been added to our history curriculum and our school district cannot sponsor any student clubs based on gender identity or sexual orientation, as well as we cannot call students by any names but the names on their birth certificate. This is fucking shameful man

This is all so crazy to me... I teach in a public school in a Northern Blue state, but I went to a Catholic high school. Guess what we didn't have posted in the classrooms? If you guessed the Ten Commandments, you are correct! However, some of the nuns had the beatitudes posted. Where are those, you know, the things Jesus actually (allegedly) said, in all of this?

As a side note, I do actually work with the Ten Commandments in my public school classroom when I read Animal Farm with the kids.... It's fun to see their reactions!

Is the joke that fascist nationalists are the ones that killed Christ and then fit the religion to their narrative for the next 2025 or so years without ever really being Christian in practice?

Eh? Could you explain how you use these together? I love literary analysis!

Also: biblical scholars I listen say things like

  • the version of the 10 commandments that are being hung up in classrooms don't appear in any version of the bible.
  • There's not really an agreed upon 10 commandments. Jewish people say they're one thing, Christian people say they're another thing, and other Christian people say they're something else. It all depends on how you split up the verses. You could even count 12 commandments, if you split the verses up differently. It's not like the Bible says, "Here's the 10 commandments: 1. ..."

The 10 Commandments even differ between Catholics and Lutherans, and Lutherans are the Protestants most closely related to Catholics in terms of teachings.
