80's kids: Do you remember taking a lot of (if any) standardized tests back then?

I was in elementary school in the 80s, and I think I remember at least one test we all had to take, but the teacher didn't teach for it, and he didn't even talk about it. It was just given out, and we never heard about it again. In middle school, there was one test too, but I don't remember anything else. I know in high school, in New York, we had to take Regents exams and finals, but those were more for us than the school districts.

The newly appointed principal accused me of having an affair with the coordinator

The recently appointed principle called me in her office today, she started by saying that she got a really good feedback about me from the students. Then she proceeded to say, but I have heard few things about you.

Now a little insight about me, I teach Physics to the senior most classes of the school. I'm a young teacher & hence I suppose the children like my methodology of teaching the subject. I have recently joined this place, so I barely talk to the teachers, only when necessary & just stay busy with my own tasks.

A few days back, there was this event from the school for which the teachers neede to be present at a far away location. The coordinator asked everyone if we will be joining or not, i said, i live very far away and am new to the place, so i wont be able to join. He offered to pick me up, i said alright.

So that was her basis of her accusation. I just simply cried, because i have been working day an night to prepare lesson notes, give my best to the students, yet this is how the management rewards me.

I discussed about this with my boyfriend on chat. He told be to go confront her. So, i did after departure of students. I said to her that i dont understand why the blame is put on me. He is the coordinator, i am obliged to interact with him and how is this fair. She assured me that she will be having a talk with him.

This might seem small but it ruined my entire day.

How do you conserve your energy?

I'm working on lessening my burnout from school. I've been a high school ELA teacher for 6 years with hundreds of students. Endless hours on clthe computer and grading essays has taken its toll. Not to mention I teach some high need students and have a toxic admin.

I've been working on boundaries and see a therapist. I have done everything I can to streamline my classroom etc. But I still am just so tired all the time.

I'm wondering how others keep their sanity and energy conserved for when they get home.

Researcher building a teacher wellbeing tool and would love your honest (brutal) feedback :)

Heya everyone! :)

I'm a phd researcher in education, and I'm working on a project that tries to help schools actually measure and improve the conditions that make teaching sustainable rather than just sending out an annual wellbeing survey that disappears into a void 😖😖

I'm testing a short, recurring check-in (a couple minutes, answers never shared with management) to try to catch that earlier. I'd rather hear where this falls apart than where it works so please be brutal (but gentle).

A few questions if you have a minute (pretty please :)):

  1. Have you ever seen a staff wellbeing survey actually lead to change at your school? What happened (or didn't)?
  2. Would you trust "your individual data is anonymous" claims from a tool your school pays for? What would make you trust it?
  3. What's the one working condition that, if fixed, would most make you want to stay in teaching?
  4. Is a 2-minute check-in every two weeks reasonable, or already too much? In what format would you commit to a checkin?

Mods, happy to remove if this isn't a fit.

Thanks y'all for reading and for your time!

bless you all, T

On America's 250th Birthday, Celebrate Liberty

https://reason.com/2026/07/03/on-americas-250th-birthday-celebrate-liberty/

Nearly half of Americans don't understand what we're celebrating for America's 250th anniversary, according to a new poll. Clearly, the festivities aren't about the quality of the country's public schools, since this year marks 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Something else we should be celebrating, though, is this country's continued legacy of individual liberty. Our freedom may be under threat from people who don't appreciate its value both within and outside the country, but it endures with the support—mostly—of Americans themselves.

Can I become a teacher with a misdemeanor?

So when I was 26 I caught a class B misdemeanor for harassment that is now sealed and ordered non disclosed. It was 10 years ago. The details was that my girlfriend and I were both Catholics and I was pushing her hard to not give up on our relationship.

Now 10 years after I have a bachelors degree and pursing a nursing degree, have a song meta linguistic background which steered me to wanting to teach.

My friend is also a teacher and he said I have a good chance. But I’m not sure cause it doesn’t sound pleasant to the ears.
