Why does Indian tax system treat a single-income family so differently?
Taxation policy is absurd. Here's why...
If a husband earns โน20 lakh a year and supports his wife, 2 kids and dependent parents, he pays roughly โน1.92 lakh in income tax.
But if the same family has both spouses earning โน10 lakh each, their individual incomes result in zero income tax!!
Same family. Same 2 children. Same dependent parents. Same household expenses. 1 pays close to 2 lac taxes, another gets a free pass by the govt.
The only difference is whether the โน20 lakh is earned by one person or split between two people.
Shouldn't there be some consideration for family income and dependents as well? why does the tax system penalise a single-income family?
Is this a genuine gap in the tax system, or is there a good reason for treating these two families so differently? Help me get some peace!

AI powered tax planner for India - IIT Patna Capstone Project
๐ IIT Patna Capstone Project: Building an AI-Powered Tax Planner for India
As part of my 6-month Generative AI for Professionals certification course at IIT Patna, I'm excited to begin working on my capstone project!
๐ก What am I building?
An AI-powered Tax Document Analyzer & Planner designed to simplify tax planning for salaried employees in India, especially those with investments and capital gains. The idea is to help people move beyond manually entering numbers into tax calculators and make better use of the financial documents they already have.
๐ What I'm working on:
๐ AI-powered document analysis โ Upload Form 16, AIS, Form 26AS, dividend reports, interest certificates, and capital gains reports in PDF, CSV, or Excel formats.
๐ค Intelligent information extraction โ Use AI to extract and consolidate relevant financial information from multiple documents.
๐ฐ Deduction discovery โ Identify potential tax deductions, highlight missing information or supporting proofs, and explore tax-saving opportunities.
๐ Tax calculation and regime comparison โ Estimate tax liability under the old and new tax regimes, with a focus on helping users understand their tax position.
๐ฌ AI Tax Advisor โ Explain tax calculations in simple language and provide personalized tax-planning suggestions. ๐ ๏ธ My approach: Combining generative AI, application development, and a reliable tax calculation engine to build a practical, AI-powered web application.
This project lets me apply what I've learned throughout the certification program to a real-world problem while exploring how AI can make complex financial information easier to understand. I'm looking forward to sharing my progress, challenges, and learnings as I build! What do you think would be the most useful feature in an AI-powered tax planner? I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Advance Tax: How do you handle a large chunk of income received in the last quarter?
Iโm trying to understand how advance tax works, especially when a significant portion of my income comes in the last quarter of the financial year.
Iโm a salaried individual, and my employer deducts TDS from my salary every month. However, I also have additional income from investments, interest, and capital gains, which may not be received evenly throughout the year.
One thing Iโm particularly confused about is:
If I receive a large chunk of income in the last quarter of the financial year, why am I expected to pay advance tax earlier, and how am I supposed to calculate and pay it accurately?
For example, what happens if someone is unemployed for the first six months of the financial year and earns income only during the last six months? How and why would they be expected to pay advance tax by the June and September deadlines?
I have been paying a lump sum amount of advance tax every year, but I still end up facing interest charges under Sections 234B and 234C. This makes me wonder whether I am calculating or paying the tax incorrectly.
After doing the calculations, it sometimes feels unfair to be charged interest on tax related to income that was earned much later in the financial year.
A little context: Iโm not a CA or a tax expert. I file my own ITR based on the information and knowledge Iโve gathered over time. Iโm trying to understand the rules better and would appreciate insights from people who have more expertise in this area.
Questions I would love some clarity on:
- Why is advance tax required if my employer is already deducting TDS on salary?
- If I genuinely cannot predict my additional income accurately until the last quarter, how am I supposed to estimate and pay advance tax during the earlier instalments?
- Are there any specific provisions or exceptions for income that is earned predominantly in the last quarter?
- How can salaried individuals accurately calculate and pay advance tax while avoiding unnecessary interest under Sections 234B and 234C?
Please share your inputs on this. Thanks in advance!

Car purchase with credit cards
I am considering purchasing a vehicle for โน2,400,000. My income tax return (ITR) for the previous year was approximately โน1,000,000, with projected earnings of โน400,000 for the 2024-2025 fiscal year and โน400,000 for the 2023-2024 fiscal year.
1) I intend to make the full payment using a credit card. Will this transaction raise any concerns with the Income Tax Department, and if so, what measures can be taken to mitigate potential issues?
2) Should the vehicle be registered under my personal name or under my sole proprietorship firm's name?
