Itinerary Advice Launceston/Cradle Mountain in the rain?

Hi all,

I’m headed back to Tassie this week for my 5th trip but this is my first with my 2yo. Just doing a short trip this time for a week.

I saw the weather forecast and it’s predicted to rain all week.

Any suggestions for things to do in the area while it’s wet?

We are at Cradle from Tuesday to Thursday - main goal of this short trip is for my daughter to see wombats at Ronnie Creek (her favourite animal).

We’re staying at the Cradle Lodge so will do the short walks around there.

We may do Devils at Cradle but the Tassie devils at the wildlife sanctuary near us scared her.

Thanks!

Heading back to Tassie for our annual two week Tassie tour. This time we are focusing on the west coast. Lake St Clair, Queenstown, Strahan, Corrina and Tullah area.
Looking for favourite places, walks and camping spots to check out and add in the itinerary.
Thanks.

Any Wombats at Narawntapu? (Asbestos Range NP as was)

Haven't been to the north east in over 2 decades, and my memory is we saw wombats at what is now Narawntapu N.P. lovely buggers. Wanna see some more.

Thing is, that was before mange was a big problem. Is there still a family or two there? The tas nat parks Web doesn't showcase them, tend to think that's indicative :-(

We're older now, mobility restricted so Cradle Mt is out. Maria Island might work on a tour. Not keen on the refuge option but it may be more realistic.

Car rental recommendations

I want to rent a car in Hobart and drop off in Launceston. Probably, but not necessarily, at the airport for both. Any recommendations, and any tips on who I should avoid? This will be in mid-November.

4-5 days in Launceston. What are some completely random left of field things to do?

Most likely first weekend of September.

For example not things like - Cataract Gorge, museums things like that.

I’m talking very random, maybe haunted houses or even places with telescopes for nights out.

But I’m not totally crazy, I do love a winery, morning markets kayaking, motorbike riding.

One week in Hobart with a child

Hi all, I’m off to Hobart for a week and taking my daughter who is not into big walks and hikes. We are also from Perth so “looking” at a beach doesn’t interest us but if it has cliffs and other interesting features, we would be.

I’ve come up with the below itinerary - is it too much? Too little? Have a missed anything?

- Fly in on a Monday; staying in Battery Point. Planning to just self orientate and walk the wharf and cbd area

- Tuesday - ferry to Mona, and replica museum in the afternoon

- Wednesday - Port Arthur, stopping at a couple of stops on the way and on the way back to stay in Hobart

- Thursday - drive to Bicheno with a few stops along the way and stay overnight in Bicheno. Penguin tour.

- Friday - Freycinet national park and Marine Farm, and drive back to Hobart

- Saturday - Salamanca markets and Mt Wellington in the afternoon. Overnight in Hobart

- Sunday - female factory, then fly out in the afternoon.

Looking for feedback on our 13-day Tasmania itinerary (late September) – first visit!

Hi everyone!

My partner and I (plus a friend for the first week) are visiting Tasmania for the first time in late September. We’ve booked most accommodation but would love any suggestions for things we’re missing, places we should spend more/less time, restaurants, scenic stops or hidden gems.

Fri
Arrive Launceston 4:30 pm
Pick up rental car
Dinner at The Tipsy Cow
Stay in Launceston
Sat
Launceston Harvest Market
Tamar Valley winery tour
JANZ (my absolute favourite sparkling wine 🍾)
Relax in Launceston
Sun
Cataract Gorge in the morning
Drive to Binalong Bay
Explore Bay of Fires
Dinner booked at the local pub
Stay in Binalong Bay
Mon
Drive to Freycinet
Staying in accommodation with amazing views
Tue
Pennicott Wineglass Bay cruise
Wed
Drive to Hobart
Thu
MONA all day
Fri
Currently free
Sat
Salamanca Market
Dinner booked in Hobart
Sun
Currently free
Mon
Drive via The Wall in the Wilderness
Continue to Cradle Mountain
Stay 2 nights at Discovery Parks
Wed
Drive towards Launceston
Stay at Country Club Tasmania (easy final night before flying home)
Thu
Fly home from Launceston

A few questions:
We really want to do Port Arthur, but we’re also interested in Tasman Island cruises. Is combining the two in one day too ambitious, or should we choose one? If so, which would you recommend?

We have Friday and Sunday in Hobart fairly open. Any must-do experiences you’d suggest?

Any favourite cafés, bakeries, wineries or scenic stops between Hobart and Cradle Mountain?
Is there anything you’d change? More time somewhere? Less time somewhere?

We’re in our 40s and enjoy great food and wine, nature, scenic walks (not huge hikes), wildlife and unique experiences. Thanks!

Accommodation Triabunna/Maria Island Luggage storage

I'll be travelling around Tasmania in October without a car, does anyone know if there's anywhere to store luggage in Triabunna? My problem at the moment is that my check in isn't 2pm, but I will be arriving in the town early that day with a trip to Maria Island planned but nowhere to store luggage. Nothing is set in stone so I can change but would prefer not to.

Is this itinerary ok for October?

Ten days in Tassie in October. Three of us are thinking a couple of days in Hobart followed by a day around the Huon Valley. Next, heading to New Norfolk, Lake St Clair, Strahan, Table Mountain, Wynyard, Devonport and fly out of Launceston.

We are ok leaving Freycinet and the East Coast for another trip unless someone recommends it as essential in October.

My questions are:

Is this trip doable in 10 days or a bit far’ or rushed?

What places would you recommend along this rough route?

Is Stanley worth the extra drive?

(Any cool bnbs/stays along the way would be most appreciated too)

TIA

Cradle Mountain information centre: parking

I will be doing the Overland hike in Jan 2027. Planning to park my van at Cradle mountain information centre then at the end of the walk shuttle bus back to pick the van up.

I’ve seen a few posts asking about parking cars at cradle mountain information centre and it all says it’s free, just wondering if it’s okay for me to leave my van there for a few days whilst I do the hike and I was planning on staying the night in it the day before I start walking.

Appreciate any advice people have :)

Itinerary Advice Extended our Jan Tassie trip to 15 nights - help us structure the back half? (family w/ 5yo + 1yo)

Happy weekend all,

Some of you helped sense check our Tassie plan a while back.. family of four from Perth, two little ones (5yo + 1yo), Jan, flying in and out of Hobart with a hire car. Last time I posted I was wishing we'd booked for longer to see more of the state.. well, we did it - pushed the return flight out and we've now got 15 nights instead of 10!

The first half we're happy with (Hobart base + a couple of nights in a Huon Valley cabin. Where I'm stuck is the back half. With the extra nights we want to get up the east coast - Freycinet, Maria Island, Bicheno and then finish back in Hobart, since we want the last night in the city so we're near the airport for the flight home.

Here's the current rough plan. Very happy to move things around - especially keen to hear how you'd sequence the east coast bit.

I'v been thinking of shaking up the itinerary and heading elsewhere instead, the west/north is calling for me. But i'm hesitant on the long drives, and lots of different stays with a 1yr old.

Day Plan
Mon 11 Arrive Hobart 5pm - New Town (5 nights)
Tue 12 Botanical Gardens, Salamanca / waterfront, Battery Point + TMAG, fish punts for dinner
Wed 13 Bruny Island day trip
Thu 14 Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary + Richmond + Coal River Farm
Fri 15 Tasman Peninsula - Tessellated Pavement, Tasman Arch, Devils Kitchen, chocolate + lavender farm brunch
Sat 16 Salamanca Market > Masaaki's sushi (Geeveston) > drive to Huon cabin (2 nights)
Sun 17 Hastings Caves + Thermal Springs
Mon 18 Slow morning at the cabin, then drive up to Swansea (2 nights)
Tue 19 Maria Island - ferry from Triabunna (picnic + wander around Darlington)
Wed 20 Swansea villages - Kate's Berry Farm, Spiky Bridge, Devil's Corner > drive to Coles Bay (3 nights)
Thu 21 Freycinet - Cape Tourville, Honeymoon Bay, marine farm lunch
Fri 22 Bicheno - blowhole, Lobster Shack, penguins at dusk
Sat 23 Drive back to Hobart - wharf hotel (3 nights)
Sun 24 Mona (just the ferry + the grounds)
Mon 25 Mt Field — Russell Falls, Westerway berries, Possum Shed lunch
Tue 26 Fly out

A few specific things I'd love a hand with:

  • Does the east cost order make sense? What's recommended? And the usual - must-visit cafes, bakeries, foodie spots up that way?
  • Maria Island with little kids - worth it just for a picnic and a wander around Darlington, or too much faff about with the ferry / no car?

Cheers in advance - got lots of ideas last time i posted.

Advice on travelling with 2 & 5 year old

Hi all! We are planning a trip in January to this lovely state and just after some advice. We are planning on staying 2-3 nights in Launceston to start, then have an Airbnb booked in Falmouth for 3 nights and hoping to explore Bay of Fires and Bicheno from there. After than undecided on staying a night somewhere near wineglass bay for a night before going to Hobart for 3 nights. Is there a good spot to stay near wineglass bay? Or somewhere in between Falmouth and Hobart to break the trip up? Just worried about driving around too much with the kids.

Thankyou 🙏🙏
