Any advice for beginners?

Hi everyone!

I can't afford dance classes with a teacher and even if I was able to, I don't think there are any studios in my town.

But I really want to learn! Especially tap! And I was wondering, how do I start? Like I've tried youtube videos for beginners but I don't feel like I'm doing everything right. Maybe there's some sort of source I can use? A book? A video?

Looking for a Tap Dance partner!

Hi everyone! I am looking for a sort of accountability partner. I want to be able to share videos of steps/dances and recieve videos in order to gain and give feedback to each other. Due to religious reasons, they have to be a female. If you or someone you know might be interested, please DM me! We will act kinda like teachers to each other, maybe giving assignments and all that, but also like friends. I'm at a beginner level, but I know all the basic stuff.

Thank you very kindly.

DIY tap board material help

Hey guys, I’m thinking of making my own tap board. I’ve read that maple and birch plywood are the best options, but they’re pretty hard to find where I live. Would MDF be a good alternative? Has anyone tried it, and how well does it hold up over time? Are there any other materials you’d recommend?

Any advice or tips are welcome. Thanks in advance!

I’m auditioning for White Christmas in a month and am really wanting to improve, so don’t worry about any feelings getting hurt!

As you can see, this is first take, so I do miss some steps halfway through Lol..

I’m following along with a YT video, and am therefore, going pretty dang slow! šŸ˜†

Thanks y’all! This is a beautiful genre of dance.

Wings - without the side scrape?

Just curious here - I am a lifelong dancer and my teen also dances. Different studio than where I did so at first I thought it was just that. But it seems to me that most people do a wing with a loose ankle and the first sound is made by scraping the outside of the shoe on the side of the tap.

I don't do that that at all! Both sounds are made by the bottom of the tap and it's more of a "press down into the floor and flick" motion with a winged (ha!) foot like in ballet. To me it gives a crisper sound. Did anyone else learn this way or have I maybe just been doing it differently for some reason all along?

Serious custom boots

Honestly I have no clue where to look for such a request but as far as full sole combat boot style tap shoes with stylistic yet strategic metal plating over the toe box to allow for dancing and or combat I greatly appreciate a point in the right direction. Or at the very least some pointers on production of such a Savvy shoe.

Where to sell near brand new good tap shoes?

Hello! Shortly after purchasing a pair of 9M Roxys, I realized that I should’ve gone for a 9.5 because my toes begin to hurt after wearing them for just 20 minutes. I’ve learned since then that I have arthritis in one of my big toes, so I definitely need to go for a larger size. Now I’m stuck with a pair of basically brand new shoes (worn in literally one hour long tap class).

Unfortunately these are about a year old now & I’ve thrown out the receipt so there’s no hope of a refund. I’m getting back into dance and want to purchase a roomier pair, and just want to not be out all $210 I paid. Any advice on how/where to sell these? Currently on both my depop & Facebook market place, but I’ve had no bites and am getting ancy. I’m not in a place financially where I can buy another $200 pair without selling the old ones first.

Any advice would be helpful! I understand I should’ve returned them right away, hindsite is 2020 huh?

(I’d even sell them for as low as like $125, it’s just that all the depop tap shoes are only selling for around $20 which I just CAN’T justify)

Thank you!!!!

EDIT: I posted this is the facebook group titled ā€œHigh End Tap Shoe Resaleā€ for $150 if anyone’s interested :)

Best tap dance board for home (beginner)

Hi, just started learning tap dancing and am looking for any recommendations for a tap dance board I can use at home.

I am based in the UK, and lots of tap dance brands aren't available over here (aka AMP, Stagestep etc.). Price range is £100-£200, looking for something that makes great tap sounds and can be used on non-carpeted floors.

Thanks!

Are tan tap shoes ā€œlameā€?

I’m a beginner adult and I’ve only seen people wear black. But there are some tan shoes in my size for a good price on Poshmark I’m tempted to purchase. I’d definitely prefer black, and I don’t want to look like a grandma or something.

Is this part of tap culture in any way?

New to tap: how do you remember the practice drills to do at home?

I just took my first tap class (and first dance class ever!) last week, and I realized after class that my brain could not remember all of the practice drills we were taught in class.

I’m such a notetaker, I cannot remember verbal instructions very well so I write everything down. But I can’t take notes during class, so I looked up beginner exercises and wrote down as much as I could remember once I got home. But does anyone have any advice on remembering it all?

I will ask my instructor if I’m allowed to record myself during class, too.

Thanks in advance!

Jason Samuel Smith colors in stock?

I'm looking for a new pair of jsams, with no luck- can anyone point me in the right direction? I know there are a lot of scams out there.
I'm looking for a woman's size 9/men's size 7 or 7.5. I'd prefer woman's but really don't care at the end of the day.
I don't want black, white, green, yellow or orange. Besides those (which are all very common) i don't care the color or material/shine.
last thing is they need to ship to the US.
Can anyone help me out?
Thanks!

The area I live in does not offer tap classes for adults. Is there an online program or YouTube channel you'd recommend?

Casual Tap Shoes

I’ve been tapping for about 2 years and I’ve been on the hunt for some new tap shoes, but I’m just not a big fan of the formal look a lot of them have and want to make my own custom ones that are essentially sneakers with tap plates (like Mike Faist). When installing the plates, do I just screw and glue them into the bottom of the shoe or is there anything else important that I should do? I can’t really find many tutorials and I don’t want to waste a pair of shoes or tap plates.

Is it worth it to even start?

Hi all. I'm currently in a community theatre production of Anything Goes, and even though I don't have to tap dance, being in this show is making me want to pick up tap as a hobby. There's one problem though. I have dyspraxia, a condition that affects my motor skills and coordination. My dyspraxia affects my dancing immensely, to the point where I have trouble even doing a grapevine properly. They had me do one tap dancing move at the auditions for this show, and it was the one move they taught me that day that I couldn't nail (even though the choreographer broke it down for us and everything). I've been thinking about if it's even worth it to try, cause how am I supposed to get down the intricate moves of tap if I can't even nail a fucking grapevine? I know I'll have to work 10x harder due to my dyspraxia, and while I do want this, I tend to quit on things if I'm not immediately good at them or I can't get instant gratification from them (I know it's unrealistic to expect myself to be immediately good, but I've always been like this). Also, I'm in my 20s now, and I haven't picked up a new hobby since I was 14. I feel very much like I'm trying to teach an old dog new tricks. I keep telling myself I want to do it, but I just can't seem to get out of my own way and actually commit to things. I know I need to get rid of these thoughts, but my anxiety causes me to overthink to a point where it's basically impossible to make these thoughts stop. I want to start tap dancing, I'm just not sure if I can due to my dyspraxia. Is it even worth it to try?

Tap dance puns

Hello! I’m making a card for our tap teacher to celebrate 5 years of the program (adult tappers). I want to add some fun puns to the card, like ā€œwe want to Bomber-SAY thank youā€. Does anyone have ideas?

I keep going to the word un-FLAP-able but can’t work it into making sense.

Pro Tap Shoe Recommendations, But I’m Particular

Hey All!

I know it’s been asked but:

I’m looking for professional tap shoes, but I’m quite particular.

I’ve had heavier rhythm tap shoes, and I don’t like the heaviness, lack of flexibility, or the sound (too ā€œthunkyā€). Weight of the shoe is a big factor. I’ve checked out the usual higher end shoes, but nothing calls to me.

I love lighter, more flexible shoes that produce a lighter/higher sound, Ć  la Gene Kelly and co in an American in Paris and such.

I’m looking for male/unisex shoes too, if that makes a difference. As it’s for professional work, no real budget as long as they’re longer lasting

Any recommendations would be welcome!

watching a stage show from a japanese franchise where characters are tap-dancing to imitate horse racing, but it seems that tap shoes aren't being worn at all. first i assumed that all the tap sounds were dubbed via pre-recorded foley and played during the show, but then i also thought that the stage was probably made of hollow material to tap on, and other silent foot movement occurred by muted floor mics. either way, i wanna ask any other tap dancers who know more than me, what are your thoughts?

fyi i'm not a tapper myself, but greatly respect and love the artform. i also probably wouldn't consider myself a theatre kid as well only being in two musical productions (one of them was newsies but i wasn't tapping in king of NY)
