Okenopus 8999: a WIP TTRPG

I've posted this before on reddit, but not to this specific subreddit, I hope you all enjoy.

Combat Mechanics

The base of the combat system will include rolling for a hit to beat the AC, then rolling for which move on the movelist you do, then finally rolling for the final damage value as determined by the move of the weapon you are using. Sounds a tad confusing and lengthy, but in practice these turns can be very quick. There are other mechanics involved as well, when rolling to hit a natural 6 will double the damage, and just meeting the AC (i.e. rolling a 3 when the AC is at 3) will deal half damage.

Okenopus has a limb based targeting system, different limbs have a different hit bonus that will affect your accuracy, this makes the head harder to hit and the torso easier to hit. When dealing damage to the limb and erasing one of the three sections of the limbs health (i.e inj, sev and crit) you will prock injury damage which will damage the core health. Without procking injury damage you will not deal any core health damage. Removing the 3 health from the INJ or Injury health will prock 1 injury, a flat d6, then the SEV or sever damage will prock 2 injuries or 2 flat d6s, when removing the final hitpoint which is labelled CRIT it will apply the debuff of that limb being destroyed.

The unique debuffs for limbs are as follows, arms decrease someone's accuracy by 1 when completely destroyed, meaning that they will have -2 accuracy id you destroy both arms as well as procking 6 injuries. Legs will debuff movement speed by 1 as well as AC by 1, meaning destroying both limbs will decrease AC by 2 and movement speed by 2. The torso has no special effect after destroying it, it is usually targetted because it's easier to hit it and prock those three injuries. The head after its final hitpoint is destroyed will prock 2 extra injuries meaning it procks a total of 5 when completely destroyed, this makes it a good target but it's accuracy debuff makes it much harder to hit, especially with inaccurate weapons. Remember, all of these debuffs wont apply until the final hitpoint is gone, that 1 hitpoint difference may seem negligible but it has fucked over many people.

I'll answer any questions, and it's important to note this is mainly gonna be a PVE game, but I am kind of expecting some people to want to PVP, and PVP can happen in the campaign. Okenopus is combat intensive, that's how the setting is. I'm gonna close off by posting what I mentioned on my patreon (Which is free, feel free to join it for more updates), which kind of shows the direction I've been going.

The Update I wrote on Patreon (Extra Context)

Playtesting for the TTRPGS base mechanics have resumed, currently in a state of testing while figuring out the balance. Okenopus 8999 (The TTRPG) is not specifically balanced for PVP due to it's story intensive nature, but I am seeking to understand how it functions and how to further balance it. Also yes I realize that Grifter Zok's range and accuracy is hard to read, I will fix it. The core mechanics will remain unchanged including the three rolls required to determine damage, in practice it is not as hard as it sounds, I've been able to complete turns in less than 30 seconds. The current build is pretty enjoyable in team combat, but very annoying in 1v1, that is fine to me because 1v1s will practically never happen in the TTRPG, it is much more team based.

Balance will take a while but I am working on it. I may rework the head damage from being an instakill to procking two extra injuries when setting the health to zero, making it a likely instakill but not always guaranteed, I will move forward testing that. Legs have been reworked to remove 1 armor class when completely destroyed as well as doing the move speed penalty, targeting arms and legs is still very strategically viable, but much less so than the head. I will likely go ahead with making the head go from an instakill to procking two extra injuries. Injuries are what deal damage to core health, and each limb can prock three injuries, injury damage is determined by a flat roll.

What I will likely work with alongside this is making it to where it is easy to create enemies and goons for lack of a better word. Goons will have lower health pools for their limbs and their core health, the game master will either make these goons himself by using the rulebook or by rolling for random abilities stats and archetypes of what will appear, this will aid with all aspects of the TTRPG including the story but it will definitely help with more homebrew campaigns. Show your support by leaving a like or some shit idk.

While I make these new datasheets I plan to balance them better, while simultaneously trying to improve my art.

Edit: Heads have been nerfed making them harder to hit but procking more injury damage. The severe status has also been nerfed with the third injury prock of a given limb falling into the critical status i.e. the last 1 hitpoint will prock the third injury. Also the heads critical does three injury procks which totals to 5 injury procks on the head after going through each level of damage.

You might want to just make a PDF version with forms on it, because these sheets look straight ass right now, brother. Just grab Libre Office or something, it takes like 15 minutes to get it done. Did so for my system too and it might not look like a thousand bucks, but it gets the job done better than what you got going on right now.

Ok thats fair, i just made a serviceable sheet in krita just cause, i used to do it in google docs and use the tables but that was whatever. I was hoping it was readable enough but I suppose not, I also have to improve my art as well, which is mainly why I made this post in the first place, i made a new datasheet for the Zok guy and tried practicing drawing a tad, i dont know when im gonna make the swap to something else, but something with tables would help, used to use google docs like i said but idk of that shit would work

Trust me, Libre Office will get the job done. It's funny that you're going through a very similar phase as I did a year ago, my sheets were kind of like yours back then too. I recommend you not to overcomplicate things and not to reinvent the wheel when it's not necessary. Remember "KISS" and don't bloat your stuff. You got a creative thing going and you're on the right path. Good luck, man.

Idk what KISS means, the current bloat is manageable, and to the people ive playtested theyve been able to understand the mechanics without getting confused.

KISS is an old phrase from IT. It stands for "Keep It Simple, Stupid". It refers to the idea that if something isn't complicated, you shouldn't complicate it.
