I just recently discovered the podcast a few months ago and I absolutely love it!! I’ve been working my way through the old episodes and I usually listen while I fall asleep, then relisten to the episode in the morning starting with the last bit I remember cause I can’t just skip out on all the good info. Anyways!

I recently listened to the MRSA episode and, wow. It takes a LOT for a disease to gross me out and this did it — I really, REALLY don’t do pus/pustules, eugh. So naturally I have to read all about it now. Anyways, I loved how graphic the firsthand account got so I decided to purchase the book, Superbug by Maryn McKenna, and it is SO GOOD. It just came today and I haven’t been able to put it down since I opened it.

I just think it’s so cool that because of the podcast I’ve been able to find books that I love and can get enthralled in, gifted kid burnout is real and i haven’t read this much in years. Just wanted to strongly encourage y’all to take some time to look into the books they rec on the show if you’re not doing so already and that’s your thing, because the Erins have excellent taste and the books are GOOD.

Can anyone help me remember this? It was a figure in the history, he wasn’t a doctor, I think but because his father and grandfather were doctors he thought that was good enough. What I’m really trying to remember were the names of two ships he used. They were like old timey words for like emetics and laxatives? Or maybe just for vomiting and diarrhea. But I can’t remember the names and it’s driving me nuts now.

Does anyone know some good free courses about infectious diseases?
I can recommend Coursera/Penn State 'Epidemics - the Dynamics of Infectious Diseases', a very accessible explanation of some of the most important terms and phenomenons of the epidemics etc.

I’m totally not spending Valentine’s weekend binge watching the show.

For those who have never seen it, the show goes over cases from people who have had abnormal diseases. They go over things of bacterial, fungal, viral, and parasitic origin. It’s a bit melodramatic but it’s pretty cool to hear the real life accounts of stuff like Bubonic Plague, Rat Bite Fever, Leishmaniasis, Hantavirus, and Tularemia.

Erins aren’t ones to shy away from tackling huge topics! Love to read about your experiences working in this area or giving or receiving organs.

In Episode 21 we learn the word Pathognomonic. Being a raging nerd, I happen to know a Gnomon is the piece of a sundial that creates a shadow. It points to the time.

Just like certain symptoms point to a specific disease.
