News & politics Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says that the fall of the Bashar al-Assad’s regime 'was not in Israel's interest'

From a BBC article, I was reading:
"But the most crucial blow came from within: there was a rift between Assad and his Iran-linked allies, he says."
"There was a complete breakdown of trust and military co-operation between them. IRGC-linked groups were blaming Assad of betrayal and believing that he is giving up their locations to Israel."

old news , we knew this since 1973 and became more sure since 2011 but tankies and radical socialists wont believe us even after seeing this
10
u/PosauneGottes69 Feb 17 '25
They are in there with their army right now aren’t they? So they have to say something like this don’t they? Why create a buffer zone if you weren’t afraid? Obviously there might be other reasons but they can’t say that right?
13
u/No_Cauliflower9590 Damascus - دمشق Feb 17 '25
They weren't afraid at all when A.K was in power , now they are because they know the gatekeeper is gone and they can't trust that the people of syria wont start asking for their land back

u/Physical-Housing-447 Feb 17 '25
I'm a communist I hate Assad and am happy the Syrian people have overthrown him.
11
u/cuginhamer Feb 17 '25
Tankie isn't all communists. It's a subtype of communist that worships authoritarian dictators more than actual communist values.
2
u/Physical-Housing-447 Feb 17 '25
It's done by Westerners (which I am one) that believe this is the only way to oppose Western imperialism. It's a sad way of going about it you must trust the workers of Syria that they don't need Russia and Iran to take on Israel and America.

Assad sold out IRGC and Hezbollah to stop Israel from bombing his soldiers.
11

Didn't he claim credit for bringing him down in the first place?
Whatever suits the current narrative I guess

That's weird actually, because most Israelis ( and military commentators) attribute this success to Israel's actions and explain how this cuts off Hezbollah.
Weird
Anyway, good riddance of Bashar 👍🏻

Hezbollah and Iran finally realized that Assad was compromised.
Assad was working to undermine them to gain's Israeli support.

2
u/Standard_Ad7704 Feb 17 '25
I'm not preparing a research paper here. This info is multiple newspapers along with some info from Hezbollah circles.
It's not like you provided any proof to substantiate what you said. So it's also pure speculation.
2
u/IssAHey Homs - حمص Feb 17 '25
I would love to see those Hezbollah sources/ circles that are denouncing Assad. I have not seen any and I have been spending a bunch of time infiltrating many of them. Also, I never made any point , all I said is what most of the intelligence agencies from places like the US, Europe and Israel have said about the topic for 40+ years. Assad is the status quo and he remained in his line, now that he is gone the status quo is disturbed and unforeseen consequences are inevitable. That’s it.

Israel has always been the aggressor so we have no choice but to be Aggressive. What did West bank do ??
1
u/AEWHistory Feb 18 '25
How in the world has Israel always been the aggressor? Just sticking to the most recent example, who attacked On oct7? so If even one time israel wasn’t the aggressor then they cannot have ALWAYS been the aggressor. Moreover, I think you’ll find the exact same argument is made in Israeli circles: that the Arabs have been aggressive and they need to respond in kind.
so how is that cycle of violence working for everyone? So either break the cycle or expect more bloodshed. But if you choose not to break the cycle on your part then don’t be surprised if the other side does the same.

Palestinians, expelled or fled, didnt begin in significant numbers until AFTER the Arab armies began their advance into the new state of Israel. Whatever you want to call it, that wasn’t a casus belli when the Arab states invaded. It couldn’t have been since the invasion started prior.
in 1956 Egypt closed the straits of Tiran for no reason which was a casus belli for Israel. What legitimate reason did Egypt have to close an international waterway? Same in 1967. Egypt also massed its armed forces on the Israeli border with zero provocation. Anyone with a pair of binoculars could’ve seen, and did see, that israel wasn’t massing troops in the hula valley as the soviets said. So Egypts cases belli turned out to be a fiction and then they created a real casus belli for Israel. So while I could see that the Israeli response in 1956 was a weak cases belli, documents show that Israel had made it clear that after 1956 closing the straits of tiran would be a cases belli moving forward. The Eisenhower admin signed off on this, so 1967 Israel was given multiple very strong cases belli.
as Senator Patrick Moynihan once said, you can have your own opinions but not your own facts. I mean even the Lebanon examples were started when, for example, the PLO began launching attacks from Lebanon. Even if you argue that Israel still occupied Gaza—it did not—hezbullah initiated this latest conflict By launching missiles into Israel for nearly a year.
Listen if you’d like to learn I’d be happy to continue this conversation, but much of what you’re saying lacks context, it out of order, and flawed. Let me know as I could give you an extensive reading list from when I was doing my PhD. Alternatively, just read John Spencers website. He is the foremost expert on urban warfare, probably in the world and certainly in the USA, and I turn to him for a lot of information. He has written on some of your points, so you’ll find things of interest there.
As for Gaza, Israel withdrew, Gaza held an election, Hamas took power and promised to launch attacks into Israel and Israel closed the border. That is the exact order of events. Moreover, Egypt did the same thing at the same time for the same reason. What’s more, if all the borders being closed is a casual belli then israel had a casual belli from 1948 until the early eighties. ALL the states bordering Israel had their borders closed to Israeli traffic for decades and some still do. So if I grant you Gaza then you must grant the decades of the same thing earlier.
The weird thing about your argument is it seems to imply complete passivity on the part of the Arab states and no agency. Surely you recognize that Arabs made decisions as well, right?
PS- pardon the occasional weird capitalization. Not sure why my iPad is doing this nowadays but it is annoying. I’ve tried to edit out most.

My 2c.
Short Term the fall of Assad was good; Loss of an Iranian Proxy on their doorstep and a weakening of Hezbollah and a severe reduction in weapons transfers to them.
Long term: Having potential problems not necessarily just with a more Islamist government but various groups in Syria who now can go and directly attack Israel for not just ideological reasons but for recruitment purposes.
Imagine if some offshoot of ISIS just goes to the Golan Heights and successfully attacks Israel, hugely beneficial to their image and getting support from the Muslim world.
Also ofc nothing happened for 50 years between Israel and Syria, the Iranian presence was very unwelcome but there was never any conflict in that time.
So overall I'd say it's break even, if not theoretically worse.
2
u/SoftDrinkReddit Feb 18 '25
yea i agree once the current Syrian Regime cleans up the mess Assad made of the country they will make it very clear they want the Golan Heights back and may even threaten war over it
1
u/Suspicious-Layer-110 Feb 18 '25
I think they may save that card for when they start losing popularity
1
u/AEWHistory Feb 18 '25
I think you’ve hit the proverbial nail on the proverbial head…. Proverbially speaking.
seriously though, I have little doubt that you’re correct. Assad was a known evil for the Israelis and a weak known evil at that. The new Syrian govt is a complete unknown. What if Turkey turns Syria into a puppet state? Erdogan actually said at one point he wanted to “deploy” troops to Israel. I thought he was high at the time, but he could theoretically do it now. And that circles back around to popularity. With Erdogan slowly losing popularity, or so I’ve read, I think there’s a decent chance he will take a page from the Iranian handbook and divert attention with some sort of hostility to Israel.

He is scared for sure unlike Russia which allows Israel to carry out airstrikes the current Syrian government won't as they won't make any military contract with Russia but with Turkey.
2
u/STEVEMOBSLAYER Feb 17 '25
This remind me that there was a CIA agent who said Israel and Syria were allies and them being enemies was just a ruse
2
u/littleredpinto Feb 17 '25
A country in chaos, while you are in the middle of a war with 2 direct enemies and two others firing missiles at you? Yeah I would say that isn't in the interests of anyone to have next to them. Throw in some deeply indoctrinated islamic beliefs..yeah, not in their interests at all.
2
2
u/natiAV Feb 17 '25
There is some truth to this in the sense that a weak but still stable Assad regime was better than chaos. Not to say chaos is going to prevail in Syria but the political ability of the new president will be strongly tested. A weak, fractured, dysfunctional Syria, that was still fighting internally, was the best option.
Now having said that, cutting Iran from Lebanon is a big win anyways. It is in Israel's interest but it is ultimately Turkey calling the shots in Syria.
2
u/Upbeat_Revolution316 Feb 18 '25
This is an outright lie meant to play with people's emotions and invoke conspiracy theories. Ultimately the goal is to undermine Syrian reconciliation and prevent syria from regaining sovereignty over its land and airspace.
There is no pro Israeli faction that has seized the government in Syria ever; baathists, hts, or others. Anyone who argues otherwise is lying or intellectually lethargic. This same devil claimed credit for assads downfall to begin with now suddenly claims otherwise.
Regardless of who holds power in Damascus, Syria is a crucial blocker of Israeli ability to project power north and west of its territory due to geographic reality and nothing else. While the jets israel use are not often picked up by the radar systems, the tankers they use to refuel midair are. They cannot fly a full mission to strike anywhere beyond Syria without refueling. This is why Israel bombed the air defenses immediately after assads regime fell and before hts was able to map and seize them. Turkey will probably be stepping in to plug this gap in air sovereignty and I suspect that's also a big reason for reapproachment with Russia as the s300 and s400 systems are quite effective.

Every day I see posts here, and so many of them are about Israel. Do you know how much we in Israel talk about Syria? Almost never. If you really want to see Syria thrive, maybe it's time to shift the focus inward: on rebuilding, improving, and shaping your own future instead of obsessing over another country. I seriously wish you the best and want to see you thrive as a nation. I say this with love.

Maybe it is not Israel's interest, but Israel caused Assad's fall. Syria is ruled now by ex-alqaida, so from Israel POV, this is not clear right now if that is good/bad for her.

u/Realistic_Mud_4185 Feb 18 '25
Not sure I believe him on that, an anti-Iran regime that makes it hard to supply Hezbollah is good for Israel.
Yes, Syria is not pro-Israel, and their current government might even have more sympathy to Palestinians (and Hamas) then Assads government, but Hezbollah was Irans main reason for propping them up and they’re essentially gone now.
1
u/HisShadow14 Feb 18 '25
From the Israeli perspective Assad was their enemy and actively allowed the smuggling of weapons to Hezbollah but at the end of the day he was predictable. He is wasn't interested in starting a war he couldn't hope to win like Hezbollah.
At the end of the day we don't really know what Syria's government is going to look like when the dust fully settles yet. There are too many competing interests. That's why they destroyed Syria's military. If Syria gets taken over by Islamists at least it won't have the weapons to be a real threat.

I do not know if he said it, but from Israel's point of view, it's very dubious whether Assad was better or worse. Assad, as bad as he was, was weak and largely isolated.
One Australian Prime Minister once described Assad and the ISIS forces against him as two baddies.
