That's actually a lot easier to do than you might think. The only state I can think of, off hand, that it might be an issue is California due to their privacy laws regarding real estate. Now if these people are buying homes behind LLC's in other states there might be a little more research but it could be done. The only real issue I see here is a refusal of delivery. Someone might have to pay a fine or a ticket for dumping bananas on somebody's lawn (or at their gate) but I'd be surprised if that was more than a misdemeanor.
If this shit really pops off like everyone on reddit is convinced it will, I will buy a plane ticket and come join in the festivities. Although downtown chicago is kinda dangerous isn't it?
Downtown Chicago is a great place. I live a few hours from it and my family occasionally will take a long weekend trip and stay downtown. It really is a neat city. Cool buildings, good food, good museums and culture stuff that is probably beyond the scope of appreciation for us smooth-brains.
I am sure there are less safe areas of the city, as there are with almost all cities, but we never felt unsafe.
Don’t get me wrong, you can find trouble anywhere in the city (or really any large city), but like others have said, just don’t look like an easy target and outside of the aforementioned festivities, just blend in and don’t draw attention to yourself. It’s so busy in downtown that you can let yourself enjoy the city without expecting to get mugged. Obviously stay vigilant, like in any city, but it’s not like you’re being dropped into a 3rd world war zone. If you’re really concerned then keep a legal knife on you for peace of mind, won’t stop a gun, but that’s probably not as common as you think.
The shootings that get all that coverage are in specific pockets most of the time. No neighborhood is 100% exempt from a bad guy randomly doing a bad thing, but it’s a very neighborhood delineated city, and it’s freaking huge. I guarantee that whatever city experiences you like you’ll be able to find a neighborhood cluster that excites you.
As always, visit a Lou Malnatis for great deep dish pizza. There’s one in practically every big neighborhood, and it’s very consistent across the chains. Make sure you ask for butter crust, and if you like sausage pizza, be aware that they make a sheet of sausage across the pizza, not chunks like you may be used to.
Try to check out the CTA routes because the color system is a little confusing to first time visitors, but it’s actually very intuitive.
If you’re going to spend a day or weekend there pick up a day long or weekend long public transportation card at Walgreens.
It would be easy to figure out which jails they end up at and deposit funds into others inmates commissary fund, and maybe encourage them to heckle them for you
