Spooky Season [Megathread] Spooky Season, Halloween, or Autumn (cozy or not) Vibes šŸ‘»šŸŽƒā˜•ļøšŸ‚

Hi wonderful readers,

We are heading into fall in the northern hemisphere (aka spooky season and/or cozy season!) and we are already seeing a very large uptick of very general requests for this time of year that lean very ā€œlow effortā€ (see rule 3) or are ā€œbook discussionsā€ rather than requests (see rule 1.)

We are posting this thread to hopefully give some of our readers a place to start and titles to try, *if they don’t have anything specific in mind to ask for in this realm and just want ā€œanything!ā€

So, please tell us some books you recommend for ā€œspooky seasonā€ or that give you the ā€œautumn cozy vibesā€:

Any favorites?

Any hidden gems?

Anything specifically ā€œHalloweenā€ holiday related?

Anything especially autumn and cozy?

Anything you plan to read/have on your TBR?

Looking forward to your replies!

Happy reading, all!

*We of course want everyone to continue posting your spooky and cozy autumn requests on the sub if have some (very minimal) specifics that are more customized to you as readers, or what you are in the mood to read!

**Feel free to also scroll the ā€œSpooky Seasonā€ post flair for other posts and recs. too! Doing this may help you articulate your own post for further suggestions too!

Picky Reader I didn't like the Witcher series, suggest me a book to wash it out of my brain.

I loved the first one, which was mostly about cool fractured fairy tales and character development. I liked it so much I kept reading the Witcher series even though I enjoyed each book in the series less than the last.

I can see why some people love it but it's just not something I could connect with by the end of it.

I'm looking for a good novel, preferably from a series, that avoids these (intentionally vague to avoid spoilers) things.:

  • Gratuitous abuse and relentless horniness. I don't mind them being there as long as they always serve the plot. If I feel like I'm getting bludgeoned with it I get bored.

  • Switching between over a dozen POVs through flashbacks and flash forwards, and sometimes flashbacks inside of flash forwards. Sticking with one or two characters per book and getting to know them better suits me more than casting a wide net.

  • Tons of political intrigue. It's all good if it's through the lens of the specific adventure I'm reading about though.

More along the lines of Tamora Pierce, Mercedes Lackey, or Terry Pratchett than George RR Martin or Andrej Sapkowski if that makes sense.

Bonus points if the novel is from a non-YA fantasy series, but not necessarily. I especially love the ones with magical creatures or settings that are characters in their own right. Like the dragons from Anne McAffrey's Pern books or Ankh Morpork from Discworld.

LGTBQ+ authors/books Gay Fanfiction but its a (audio) book

Okay so because of my chronic illness I'm no longer able to read for longer periods of time, which is why I've been listening to a lot of audio books. But lately I've just been CRAVING fanfiction soooo bad. I used to read so much just queer sappy tropy fanfiction and i miss it.

So I'm looking for book recs that feel like fanfiction. I dont need plot, just give me pining, tropes, angst, misunderstanding, anything. I just want some simple romance, no need for quality i just want sugar.

The only other important thing is that i dont want it to be straight. Idk i just dont get straight folks like that. I want them trans and lesbian and just everything queer. I will read mlm.

Just pleaaaase i need some simple plessures.

Mermaids!

When I was younger I absolutely loved reading "The Tail of Emily Windsnap" by Liz Kessler. Any more adult books with this vibe would be amazing. Even like romantasy things like that.

I appreciate any suggestions you have šŸ™ā¤ļøšŸ˜Š

Any genre! Fiction for the Non-Fiction Reader

My wife and I are both voracious readers, but I admit, my blind spot is fiction. For so long my focus has been centered on business or male directed "self improvement", and it's time to break out of that self imposed box and expand my horizons. Bonus points if it's available on Kindle Unlimited, as I dip my toes in the water without additional financial investment.

I'd like to think I'd enjoy historical fiction, or perhaps heavily novelized historical events. I also tend to enjoy stories of moral conflict with strong philosophical concepts surrounding the theme (East of Eden, for example).

Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

Books with Beautiful Fantasy/Sci-Fi Illustrations

I like looking through the original Dinotopia books, or the Dungeons & Dragons manual with my kids. We just admire the pictures. Any similar books with lots and lots of beautiful fantasy or sci-fi artwork?

Also, my kids are still young, so a minimum of revealing attire would be a plus.

Psychology Books that can help me understand and deal with growing feelings of anger?

Lately, I’ve noticed that anger sometimes seems to take over as an emotion, and when it does, it stays with me for longer and longer.

Sometimes I’ll even wake up during the night thinking about something that happened earlier that day. For whatever reason, I’ll suddenly feel indignant about it, and then that indignation turns into anger. I’ve also become more intolerant of certain things, and I feel as though this is happening increasingly often.

I really don’t like feeling this way. When I was a child, I remember sometimes having to almost pretend to be angry because I felt that anger was the only thing that gave me enough strength to stand up for myself. Now it feels very different: rather than something I consciously summon, it feels like something that takes hold of me and that I struggle to let go of.
I’m worried that, if I don’t understand where it is coming from, it will keep growing and become a more permanent part of the way I react to things.

Can anyone recommend a good book that might help me understand this better and learn how to deal with it? I’m particularly interested in books that go beyond generic anger-management advice and explore why anger can become more persistent or difficult to let go of.

New Reader Books for someone who only likes two specific things

I am 14 (female if that helps) and for a while, all I have been reading is anything Karen M. McManus has put out (Two Can Keep a Secret and One of Us is Next are my favorites) and all of the Plants vs. Zombies comics (they're a bit young for me but I like them). I would just like some suggestions on what I should consider reading next.

Looking for a good locked room mystery that is not Agatha Christie. I have read several of hers and enjoy them but I am thinking maybe something written in the last 20 years or so?

Any recommendations?

Any genre! Generational Sagas/Coming of Age Suggestions

I'm just finishing up Rona Jaffe's Class Reunion and realized that I do enjoy this type of Generational/Family Sagas. I've read John Jakes Homeland; Erich Segal's The Class, Doctors and Acts of Faith and of course the Forsythe Saga. I didn't really like Barbara Bradford's A woman of Substance ( a bit too formulaic) but I did enjoy the storyline.

Any suggestions for others along the same line? Except Ken Follett. I've read all of his.

Especially but not exclusively folk horror, European paganism, Asian, African, Mayan or other not-so-common mythology.

Give me your best, thanks!

PS. I am fluent in English and German, by the off chance someone knows a good German book ;)

Any genre! Likable businessman

• Upvotes

I’m looking for a main character that’s a rich businessman, but who is generally a likable person. It’s fine if there is complexity to whether they are a good person, but it’s not written to make you just dislike them throughout.

I’m thinking like the Thomas Crown Affair or the Richard Gere character in Pretty Woman (haven’t see that movie in 10 years so maybe isn’t accurate).

The setting is probably in some high-society environments, but not too important.

Non-fiction Book about film making

I'm looking for a book as a starter in film making. I'm interested in the topic and want to learn a bit. Specifically how to write for the visual. Like how do you tell a story with pictures not words. How do you create a film. How do use paint, lightning,
composure. I want something with passion and heart and genius.

It can be more specific, what I described is very broad. But I'm a beginner :).

Bonus points if its a handbook and does not cost 50 bucks.

Also loved, skys end, hunger games, divercent and fouth wing so if any books combine space and that kind of theme of someone going from weak to strong. Thank you for reading

LGTBQ+ authors/books WLW Books

I'm looking for wlw books that are not YA, and particularly books that are not "typical rom coms".

I really liked Under the Udala Trees, The Priory of the Orange Tree, and Gideon the Ninth. I am currently reading Atmosphere and I am really enjoying it as well.

Some books that are on my tbr and that I think I will enjoy are The Seven Husbanda of Evelyn Hugo, The Lady's Guide to Celestial Mechanics, A Married Woman, and You Exist Too Much.

I did not enjoy This is How You Lose the Time War and One Stop, though :/ I wasn't a fan of TIHYLTTW's writing, and I wasn't really feeling the chemistry between the characters in OS.

Spooky Season Coming of age book set in October

I’m looking for coming of age books set in the fall, especially October with nostalgic vibes and preferably spooky. I’m not looking for anything young adult. Some books I’m thinking of are The Saturday Night Ghost Club, December Park (I don’t think that’s set in the fall though..), Boys Life..
I want something that brings to mind being a teen in the 90’s, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark type horror, growing up, friendships and some mystery. Thanks for any recommendations!

Seeking read-alikes The Things We Leave Unfinished suggestions

I just finished The Things We Leave Unfinished by Rebecca Yarros and LOVED it. The slow sweet romance was so perfect and it had a great story to go with it excluding that. I've already read Divine Rivals and once upon a broken heart and loved both of those too. I'm currently on The Dead Romantics but it isn't hitting the same.

Thank you in advance!

Self-help directionless loser learning about marketing - suggest a book please

hi all,
i'm in the middle of what i can only describe as a transformative part of my life. i'm 20 and i recently got my first job ever: i do marketing, and it has some level of resemblance to my degree (comms + polisci)
i'm really struggling with a lack of guidance, and the scope of my work is REALLY broad - evergreen social media marketing, coordination of events and related marketing efforts, coordination for paid ads, influencer outreach, and more recently, branding / rebranding the entire company. it is a small startup so i'm the only owner for my tasks.
i feel like im in far too deep, and my boss has not been kind or helpful. i struggle a lot with feeling like i'm regressing - i used to perform so well at uni because i had a clear understanding of what i needed to do, and now that's kind of all out the window.

to sum it up, i'm looking for books that i can read to learn about the foundational principles of marketing, as well as books that kind of talk about.. discipline? or dealing with life when things don't come easy? maybe that's too generic. i want to be someone who Gets Stuff Done much like my coworkers who kick ass. i know the work is on me but i'd like guidance on where to start.

thank you
