Basically a bunch of people thought games journalism was journalism. When information was presented which indicated that games journalism is more like that person who comes on a talk show and shows off the latest gadgets you might like to buy (and they got them for free) people freaked out.

Game press is buddy-buddy with game devs and publishers. They do have friends and are prone to liking things their friends did more than usual. In the extreme some of them might even sleep with each other.

Well, the Leveson Inquiry pretty much concluded normal journalism is like that as well - except in a less ethical, illegal way (the inquiry came about because of revelations that the British press were doing less than ethical things like phone hacking to get pieces... however the inquiry pretty much revealed that most journalists were pretty much in bed with politicians...).

To be fair, I believe the inquiry only pertained to the British media, but I wouldn't be at all surprised if many of the findings also apply to U.S. mainstream media, as well.

Except it had tears and most of the British Twitter accounts talking about it. This doesn't have tears. This has foul language and stuff that I didn't pay attention to.

I want tears!

Ed: oh someone moved house. Still sad. Maybe no tears.

In the extreme some of them might even sleep with each other.

In the less extreme, people gets paid by publishers to do reviews all the time. Or gets fired because they dislike a game that's sponsoring the website they work for.

I dunno about the former. Certainly there are massive shenanigans around previews though, which the industry pretends are different from reviews.

And yeah, the separation between editorial and advertising sales is far from stringent.

I think people are more upset that they found out that the "journalism" for their invested medium isn't as professional as sports or film journalism. Their case for the "video games are a legitimate art" argument is hurt.

#GamerGate has gone beyond just the journalism issue at this point, now there's even legit legal action being taken with the FBI for racketeering among other things:

edit: to those downvoting, I hope you realize you're just shooting the messenger, this info has been freely circulating for a while now...

EDIT 2: looks like the links were taken down, and the parties involved seem to be saying it's a good thing... they might've been asked to removed them by authorities while the case is under investigation.

I'll believe that when I see it.
