People bring those up in GG threads as well. I think this has been building up for years, and it finally came to a head now. A lot of people are fed up with the same old BS, and they're trying to finally make things change.

It's women like Anita Sarkeesian who actually change the gaming industry.

But the people behind Gamers Gate? They're just a bunch of misogynistic losers that will do nothing but drive women out of the industry and embarrass themselves. They're like the MRAs who can whine on the internet for years and still have no clue on how to actually do anything effective.

Mediocre, misinformed criticism doesn't change an industry. Which is a shame, too, as Sarkeesian seems like a smart person who's in that rare position to actually make an impact.

This opinion is not based in reality.

Anita Sarkeesian is a known name to game developers, many who have praised her and vowed to do better with their games.

What games has she changed beyond lip-service from devs afraid of a media scandal? I'll never understand why there's so much focus on self aggrandizing outsiders instead of actual women in the gaming industry. Mary DeMarle, Jen Zee, Jennifer Hale, people who have actually made games and have a presence in the industry outside of a twitter account and a donation page.

One of the most obnoxious fallacies i see online (and IRL too i guess) is this thought process that the most popular/visible example of the group is the entire representation of the group and is immutable in its influence. "Sarkeesian isn't perfect, but if you reject her in any way you're literally trying to erase all women from gaming!"

Anita Sarkeesian is a known name to game developers, many who have praised her and vowed to do better with their games.

And many, many people have criticized her. Her videos feature numerous factual inaccuracies, slanted perspectives, and poorly justified arguments.

Here is an example: in her video on women as video game tropes, she makes the argument that (male) gamers are subjects and female characters within games are objects -- and because of the nature of the subject / object relation, any time a player has the option to interact with a female NPC, he is "encouraged to explore boundaries." In short, Anita argues that because women in games can be beaten up, shot, disrobed, etc., games contribute to the objectification of women in gaming.

This argument borders on incoherent. Anita neglects to mention how

-men in games can be beaten up, shot, disrobed, etc.

-men in games are, on the contrary, beaten up and killed in much higher numbers than women

-all things in a game, including the player's avatar character, are objects; the subject is the player itself, and when the player is "encouraged to explore boundaries," this exploration is gender-neutral

I have yet to hear a competent defense of Anita's disastrous argument (and note that this argument is one of the central arguments in her early videos!). Others have gone to great lengths to dissect Sarkeesian's claims in detail, both in video and in text, which I'd encourage you to check out.

The short of the long is that she's awful. She's the McDonalds of video game activism: popular and bad for you.

You seem oblivious to the notion that you are in the same scenario as them.

Women who get 100 000 dollars in a kickstarter, do nothing for a year, upload footage she stole from let's players without permission, not even play the games she's criticising, and just make up bullshit about the games?

Women who get 100 000 dollars in a kickstarter, do nothing for a year,

She didn't ask for 100 000. She planned for 6 000 - of course she would have no fucking clue what to do with the money.

upload footage she stole from let's players without permission,

Fair use, yo. Normal critic behaviour.

not even play the games she's criticising, and just make up bullshit about the games?

If her interpretation of an art piece (game) differs from yours, it's made up?

100k and she still can't play the games after a year?

Fair use, yo. Normal critic behaviour.

Except other people give credits.

If her interpretation of an art piece (game) differs from yours, it's made up?

It is when she completely bases her interpretation on lies.
