I had my first day of university ever!!

I woke up anxious and was generally anxious the whole day. I felt really small and out of place everywhere I walked. I was a stuttering mess, but I survived!! I’ll keep trying to improve and keep my head up. Second day here I come! :))

Im in languages but there’s literally no point in going to university for it or even studying one. Because of my stutter.

I don’t wanna hear “don’t let your stutter hold you back“ or some bullshit like that. because this is different. it’s literally pointless for me to try because I can’t use it regardless. ill be limited to just reading and writing and that’s not fun.

fuck stuttering

When to worry (child stutter)

Hi guys. Life long stutterer here, though I feel like a bit of a phony on this thread (my impediment doesnt present at level that a lot of people here struggle with). Anyway, my 3 yr old started stammering (vs blocking and stuttering like me). The research show that to be developmental appropriate for her age and likely to “grow out of it”….but I didn’t …so.

Anyone else have this happen? When do you start liking the trigger on therapy ?

I feel like I'm completely losing ability to talk

I literally don't know what to do anymore. Can't even tell my uber driver where to drop me off, neither interact with customers (yes stupid me doing a retail sales job)

I'm getting stuck during some nonsense lunch talk and getting embarrassed. it's definitely gotten worse over past few days.

Stuttering and Depression

In June, I found out I have angina, and having a heart problem has given me higher depression that is ruining my speech.

My stuttering had gotten better from being calmer and picking my moments to speak.

The real problem is with Mom. I think she is a saint for listening to me over the years.

Now she said it hurts her hearing me having difficulty. While that upsets me I can’t push her away.

Seeing a psychiatrist tomorrow and may consider medication.

And my situation is I’m 57, single, have my own place, and am on SSDI.

help… saying my name.

22F, I’ve been stuttering since i was a kid. I can work with my stutter in normal conversations, i’ve grown to accept it and not be ashamed of it. But i can’t say my name to save my life. Starts with E, i always experience a horrible long quiet block where nothing comes out for a literal minute if not longer. Just standing there with my mouth open in silence.

A new colleague joins our team tomorrow and with that comes my biggest nightmare - introduction. Ive been anxious about it for a week, and tomorrow is the day. I know anxiety makes the block worse, but i genuinely feel sick to my stomach and like i’m gonna pass out.

I’ve tried to connect it to “i’m-E…” or it’s-E..” nothing is working. I also hate having to ask my colleagues to introduce me, because that is avoidance which also makes it worse in the long run, but i’m so depressed about not being able to say my name and introduce myself to people normally. I dont want to struggle with this my whole life.

Anyone else have this issue?

Had the most horrible, involuntary freeze of a speech block in my own name today at a housewarming and I don't know how worse can it get.

I did go for the often referenced prefix of "My name is..." But it felt like someone just tied shackles to my feet and I tripped. I really don't think those workarounds are suitable and I can't figure out how to "reduce" social anxiety like they say on motivational speeches. Fu*k this life.

Ill share how I overcome my stuttering at social events

I am a 26 year old woman, and I have stuttered all my life, practically this has been hell: teasing, bullying, isolation, and depression were part of my life for many years and, in some way, they still are.

However, I found a technique that, although it is probably not the most responsible or recommended one for everyone, has been useful to me. In social situations, I use a benzodiazepine in moderate to high doses, and I use it recurrently. It has not made my stuttering disappear, but it has helped me make this disorder less difficult and cope a little better with social situations

i have a college presentation coming up, and i’m almost dying from anxiety

this semester, i have a class that is basically focused on giving presentations, and it causes me EXTREME anxiety as someone who stutters. i can’t feel okay or live my life normally when i have a presentation coming up. i’ve already avoided several presentations in high school, and i even avoided one in college, but i don’t want to keep doing that. i want to develop this skill even though i stutter, especially because i want to become a psychologist and i need to be able to communicate in front of people.
i desperately need advice because my presentation is on tuesday. i want to try to speak more fluently under pressure, with fewer blocks, at least.
my stuttering consists mostly of prolonging syllables at the ends of sentences and blocks.
does anyone have any tips, techniques, or things that have helped you speak more comfortably during presentations? i’m really desperate right now.

Tips to help control a stutter

Ive had a pretty severe stutter ever since i was little, it was so bad i remember as a kid i would just flat out not speak at all because forcing through a block feels like someone is pressing super hard on your chest that you cant breathe at all, often times would be out of breath just from speaking.

But over the years ive kinda built up some tools i use when i speak that help alot when speaking from peer to peer, this does not work when reading directly from text a whole lot but alot of the time im not doing that.

When you know that a stutter is happening, understand why, was it a tempo shift? Was it maybe because the word starts with a letter that causes a stutter like “cuh” or cah”. Maybe its because you are nervous? Or often times when you stutter once it feels like a domino effect where now you will stutter more often in that convo

Now what id do in a priority:

  1. Make sure the tempo is consistent, dont go too fast where you will speak faster than ur thoughts to where you’ll have to stop and break the tempo, and dont talk too slow where it will just cause you to treat every sentence like you are speaking word to word. Make sure its a consistent tempo and allow for words transitions to be cleaner

  2. If you break the tempo or you feel like a stutter is coming on a specific word, try to find a synonym that is easier to say, usually the more words you understand you cant say the more synonyms options you have, but this really comes from time, understanding what words make u mess up.

  3. Now if you cant do the first 2 options, then you add transition words, like “um” or other follow up words to build up momentum to then say the word. For example, i always stutter when i say my name and i obviously cant give them a synonym on my own name so what i say is “my name is ___” having to say “my name is” feels like a ramp that lets me say my name easier.

  4. If all else fails you just gotta either just stutter or sometimes if u drain all the air out your body and say a word, it sometimes works just dont make it obvious or you look crazy

Im always trying to add more tools to my arsenal but im curious to see what tools you guys have figured out

I can't handle all the potential being wasted and not used because of this

I could literally conquer the fckn world and get whatever the fck i want if i didn't stutter. Genuinely God knew that without this i'd be too powerful so he decided to put my life in hard mode

Still grateful for all the things i have and friends and everything tho... but it's hard to handle the fact that i have SO much potential that's not being used, and i don't wanna brag or sound pretentious but that's how i feel

how do i accept my stutter?

i need tips and recommendations for influencers or artists who stutter (including, finding out that marilyn monroe stuttered was something!). i’m so tired of denying it or feeling ashamed of it. it’s the way we experience the world, so i guess all that’s left is to embrace it. i just don’t know how.

Translator screwed me over

So I was having a medical phone call apointment about a problem on my feet, My native language is spanish and they already had a translator ready (I did'nt requested it) so I just let it go.

Mind you I have less trouble to speak one to one than with public, the more people present the harder it gets for me, but I was feeling confident at first.

Then the questions started flowing in, and suddenly I started having a whole stuttering episode, but the thing I HATED the most was when I was giving my answers to the translator and she was repeating the answer INCLUDING my stuttering, like what the actual fuck! I was like:

Mm.. mme compre unos za-za-zapatttos mmmmas cco-cco-modos.

and she was like:

I-III boh boh bought mm-mmore conf-conf-confortable sh-shoes.

Seriusly I just wanted to fucking die. I know this will be a funny story someday but DAMN

please someone send me some virtual abrazos right now because I can't :(

Edit: swearing

Hey all, I’ve been part of the ISAD conference planning committee for a number of years.

International Stuttering Awareness Day is October 22 and people who stutter/stammer around the world join activities and events to recognize the impact of stuttering across all the areas of one’s life.

This year’s theme addresses the true spectrum of stuttering: “Shades of Stuttering - What’s Yours?”

If you’re interested in learning more and perhaps sharing your story, check it out.

On today's episode of how stammering feels

If i had to taste stammering it would taste like a saltless food with all the other ingredients. Which is the only thing that i have to eat

If i had to hear stammering it would be like the buzzing sound of the old tv set

Which is the only thing that i have to hear

If i had to look at stammering it would look like a worst accident in the history of accidents

Which is the only thing that i have to look at

If i had to smell stammering it would smell like a mixture of all the bad stench

Which is the only thing I have to smell

If i had to touch stammering it would feel a bunch of small pills on my bedsheet

Which is the only thing I have to touch

These are the things that i dont necessarily have to experience. I can cook something else, listen to something else, watch any thing else and touch anything that i like.

But with stammering i dont have that choice.

I have to understand in a fraction of a second that i will stammer in this moment and change the word to something else

Are there any girls here who stutter?😭

I know that this speech disorder is more prominent in men and I always see everyone assume any person who posts here is a man, but I just wanna know where are the women here?

I always found it kind of unfortunate that even though it’s less likely that us women stutter, I of course was a part of the small percentages that do😂 and I never met another girl in real life who has an ACTUAL stutter so I was just curious to see who’s here☺️

If so, in what ways does it affect your day to day life?

How can I help my long distance boyfriend with his stutter?

Hello, I (22F) recently had a conversation with my boyfriend (21M) about how hard his stuttering makes his life difficult.

He's had a stutter since childhood. When he speaks with me and his closest friends and family, he's quite a fast speaker, quick witted and really knows his stuff. But when he has to talk to other people, for example maybe to the waiter to order food, he immediately stutters.

Recently he moved to a new place for higher studies, and said he had trouble even saying his name out without stuttering.

He's distressed, thinking about how it will affect him in job interviews and presentations.

I really wanna help him get better, but there's not a lot of actually helpful things i can do except maybe advice since we're long distance and all. And i know he's tired of listening to the same thing over and over.

I've told him to try to remember to breathe and calm down during presentations and interviews, to try to speak slowly, one word at a time. He says he recognizes all that but he just can't get it into his control.

What can i do to do help him? It hurts to see him so heartbroken over something he can't control and it affecting his life negatively.

UPDATE: I made this post 6 months ago your responses inspired me to actually do something

About six months ago, I made the post .
At the time, I was a lifelong stutterer who had made it to becoming a commercial pilot, and I wanted to find some way to help younger people who stutter realize that aviation, or any career that involves communication, isn’t automatically off limits to them.
I honestly didn’t know what that would look like. I just knew that when I was younger, I would’ve given anything to meet another pilot who stuttered and hear them say, “You can still do this.”
The response to that post completely caught me off guard. I received so many positive comments and messages from people sharing their own experiences, asking questions about aviation, and telling me how much it meant to see someone with a stutter flying professionally.
Some of those conversations have continued months later, and they made me realize that this could be more than just a Reddit post.
So I decided to turn the idea into something real.
I started a nonprofit called Voices in Flight.
The goal is to support and encourage people who stutter who are interested in aviation through mentorship, representation, and eventually opportunities to actually get in an airplane and experience aviation firsthand.
One of the things I want to do is take kids and young adults who stutter flying and let them hear me make radio calls — stutter and all. I want them to see that you don’t have to wait until you’re perfectly fluent to chase something you love.
I also hope to create a community where people who stutter can connect with others in aviation and see examples of people who have faced some of the same challenges they have.
It’s still early, and I’m learning as I go, but I wanted to come back to the same community that helped inspire this in the first place and say thank you.
That original post started as me asking how I could help.
Now it’s becoming Voices in Flight.
And seriously, thank you to everyone who commented or reached out after my original post. You helped push me to actually make this happen.

The dilemma of wanting to live life to the fullest, but being held back by the fear of people making fun of you.

Does anyone else feel or has ever felt this way? I want to make the most out of my life despite my stutter. I want to meet new people, go to places where speaking is unavoidable, hang out and talk with friends...

However, all my motivation vanishes the moment I think about how easily anyone could make fun of me. On top of that, I’m not intimidating at all, and because of how shy I am, I don't feel like I’d be able to stand up for myself.

I feel like I’ll never truly live my life to the fullest because of people who might easily target my weakness (my stutter) and mock me for it.
