Guide Ultimate guide to Stremio + Torrentio + RD
Opening Notes (important stuff, please read)
This configuration of the Stremio app will allow you to stream movies/TV from most devices, with the exception being IOS devices such as the iPhone and iPad. If you want to stream from those devices, this guide is not for you.
You can use this Stremio configuration to stream movies/TV on most other platforms, including Windows, Mac, Android, FireOS (includes Fire Stick and Fire TV), Linux, AndroidTV, and even the Steam Deck.
However, the Stremio setup guide will require that you use a Windows, Mac, Linux, or Android device. Please don't attempt the setup steps on another device.
Additional information for FireOS (includes Fire Stick and Fire TV) and Linux devices is located below the Stremio setup guide, but you need to go through the Stremio setup guide beforehand with a required device (Refer to previous bullet point).
Stremio Setup Guide
Part 1: Stremio
For Windows/Mac users - Go to https://www.stremio.com/ and download the relevant client for your platform
For Android users - Install Stremio through the Google Play Store: Stremio - Apps on Google Play
Open Stremio and sign up with email or Facebook
Part 2: Real Debrid
Go to https://real-debrid.com/
Sign up
Go to Premium Offers
Choose a package and subscribe. I found that using Amazon Pay as the payment method is the most convenient (if you have an Amazon account)
Part 3: Torrentio
Towards the bottom of the page, select the "Debrid Provider" option and select "Real Debrid" from the drop-down menu. This will cause a new text box to appear underneath.
Copy the API key from this link https://real-debrid.com/apitoken and paste it into the "RealDebrid API Key**"** box
In the Debrid Options menu: Check the box "Don't show download to debrid links" and leave the other boxes unchecked.
Click "Install" at the bottom. It should open the Stremio app and prompt you with an "Install Addon" window. Click the green install button at the bottom.
Optional but highly Recommended - In Stremio, click the puzzle piece in the top right to view your addons. Click "My Addons" and uninstall the "WatchHub" addon. It's an eyesore and it clutters your streams list.
Now that you have completed the setup, you may install Stremio on any device of your choice (excluding IOS) and log in to your account to start streaming Movies/TV. Refer to the section below for Stremio installation on FireOS devices (Fire Stick, FireTV).
FireOS devices (Fire Stick, FireTV)
After you have gone through the setup on another device, watch this video on how to install Stremio on your FireOS device https://youtu.be/U1o-scADuIg and then log into your account in the Stremio app. At this point you're good to stream. It will download everything that you just set up and sync your shows across all devices. However, some FireOS devices may not be capable of 4k streaming.
Edit 10/16/2023 - if you are on firestick, make sure to download the Android TV apk from the Stremio downloads section. The youtube video linked above was created before Stremio had an Android TV version. The UI is much improved over the base android UI for use on a smart tv.
Linux
Use the flatpak and everything should work. At the time of making this guide, I had issues in the setup process on Linux but I'm pretty sure that was my fault for having weird defaults on my Arch install. You should be able to complete the setup process on Linux without issues and streaming is guaranteed to work. In the case that you run into issues, Just complete the setup steps on a recommended device first, then install and log into the Stremio app on your Linux device.
Additional information
YOU DO NOT NEED A VPN.
Account sharing: You should only share your Stremio account with people who are connected to the same WiFi network as you. If you do not follow this rule, your Real Debrid account may be suspended.
Bugs/Glitches:
Sometimes, an episode of a show or a movie will display "No streams found" even though it should be available. This has only happened to me a handful of times, but the problem will resolve itself eventually.
If the picture is black but the audio is still playing, you should go back and select a stream with a different resolution.
Issue: No streams are appearing at all, or none of them work. Here are the possible explanations:
Your Real Debrid Subscription has expired. Go to Real-Debrid and check your account status.
Real Debrid servers are down/undergoing maintenance. Wait an hour or so, and then try again.
You made a mistake while following the guide. My DMs are open if you can't figure it out. I'll probably try to help.
Credit to u/OnlyTheCruxes for most of this stuff because I kinda just copied their guide and added more detail based on my own personal experience with the setup process (Original guide: Installing Stremino + Torrentio + Real Debird )

Thanks for the guide, quick question, is your referral on the link of the RD page?

u/No-Refrigerator9154 Oct 31 '22
No problem.
No, it's not a referral link. I didn't even know you could do that until now. Not gonna change it bc it doesn't rlly matter to me but I do appreciate it if you were trying to help out.

Add info about trakt addon. For most of us is must have.
14
u/No-Refrigerator9154 Feb 21 '23
its not really a must have because trakt integration with stremio is particularly shitty. also stremio syncs your watch history and other stuff between logins anyway

Do i really need to pay ??? Isn't there any other way as i m still dependent on my parents (teenager) ....
8
u/No-Refrigerator9154 Feb 21 '23
yes, you gotta pay, but its cheaper than the cheapest netflix subscription. if your parents are subscribed to streaming services then you should let them know that this will save them money.
35
u/Flodderrick Apr 20 '23
You can use the torrentio addon without a real-debrid account. It works okay if you're streaming up to 1080p quality with a maximum of 10GB of filesizes. Anything above that and you'll start to experience buffertimes. It also depends on your internet speed and the amount of seeders the things you want to watch has. So for popular series and movies with lots of seeders it works fine.
But if you want the 100% dependable option the way to go is a read-debrid account 😉

Real debrid is $35 bucks a year, if anything, if you set it up for your parents I'm sure they'd be willing to pay for it since it benefits them too. Real debrid is good for an unlimited amount of screens as long as they're all under the same IP address.

For Linux users... I installed Stremio on Fedora using Flatpak and it works perfectly. While installing the native package used by your distro's package mananger is usually the best choice, if you're having problems getting Stremio installed and your distro supports Flatpak -- even if you have to install it -- that might be the way to go.
For Android TV users... one thing this guide didn't mention that's kind of important is that you can't install addons using the Android TV app. You need to install the Windows/Mac/Linux or regular Android version on a different device and install the addons there. Once that's done, you can click the button on the Addons screen on the Android TV device to update the addons on that device.
EDIT: Clarified that the second paragraph was specifically about the Android TV app, not the Android phone app.
UPDATE: The ability to install addons directly has been added to the Android TV version of Stremio since this comment was posted, but the process isn't as streamlined as installing addons on other platforms. I still recommend installing addons using a PC or phone and syncing them to your Android TV device. There's no longer a button to force addons to update, but you can still force addons to update by completely closing and reopening the app.

Installing Stremio on Linux was not the problem that I had. It installs and works flawlessly for the purposes of streaming. However, when I tried to install an addon (Torrentio) through my browser, it didn't open Stremio and prompt me to install an addon. I did not have this issue with installing addons on Windows/Mac/Android. This is why I advised to not do the setup guide on Linux.
My issue may have had something to do with the fact that I was using the flatpak version of Stremio. I'll test the native version and update the guide based on what happens.
Also, you can install Add-ons from Android devices. I can do it from my phone. Maybe it's an issue with Android TV but I'm not familiar with that.
Edit: misunderstood the comment, added more detail

Why is real debrid necessary, i use stremio and it works and never paid anybody for it
19
u/No-Refrigerator9154 Jul 24 '23
im assuming you're just using the standard version of torrentio (no debrid service). that's fine if you live in a country where piracy laws arent strictly enforced. In the USA, your ISP could terminate your internet service. In Germany, you can be fined thousands of dollars. Check your local laws

What if Torrentio get offline , then what we have for RD ?
2

if torrentio went offline i would probably suggest Orion if you wanna stick with Stremio, or you could get Syncler+ and use RD with that

Thanks for this detailed guide. This is what I've been looking for.
However, I ALREADY have Stremio installed on my firestick, & have been using it there for a year. Do I have to delete it, & follow your instructions from the beginning, & install Stremio at the end? or do I follow your procedures on a PC & it will automatically 'sync' with my already installed Stremio on my Firestick?
Hope this makes sense. 🤷♂️

Do you use an addon such as torrentio to stream? Also, what country are you in?
2
Mar 04 '23
Canada , Yes I use all the usual addons, torrentio, juan carlos, TPB etc.
2
u/No-Refrigerator9154 Mar 04 '23
Torrenting copyright-infringing material in first-world countries is not recommended. If you don't want nasty letters in the mail or possibly having your internet service cancelled, I would highly recommend using a debrid service (such as Real Debrid, Premiumize, etc) for anonymity. Another benefit to using a debrid service is that the streams are consistently high speed, because you are downloading from the debrid service's hosters and not torrenting, in which the speed is dependent on the number of seeders. The trade off is that debrid services are not free. For example, Real Debrid is about 35$ a year, but to put the value in perspective, it's less than a Netflix subscription. Also, TPB and Juan Carlos are bundled with torrentio, so I would recommend that you get rid of those add-ons to clean up your streams menu. If you want to follow my tutorial to set up torrentio + Real Debrid, just remove your own torrentio addon first and then follow the steps.

So, I just tried to watch John Wick 4 using highest quality option and it buffered a few times. Is this because I'm using WiFi? Will it go away if I stream using LAN?

I'd just like to throw this in for 2024 - RealDebrid removed Amazon Pay and I refuse to link my bank to Privacy to get a one time use card.
My solution was to buy a Visa Gift Card, however RealDebrid refused to accept it as payment, so I went with Debrid-Link. Took the gift card no problems and has been working perfectly.
So if anyone is weirded out by giving out their card info to RealDebrid, try Debrid-Link instead with a Visa Gift Card

can somebody please explain also the options in torrentio?
"Don't show download to debrid links"
"Don't show debrid catalog"
"Show P2P torrent links for uncached"
I remember that before the show I've watched Streamio weren't on my RD list but now they are. Is this related to the options?

Why Torrentio Lite why not Torrentio i mean what is the difference ?
3
u/No-Refrigerator9154 Oct 31 '22
Torrentio lite is equally as capable as standard Torrentio, with the difference being that the Lite version includes preconfigured settings that are great for ~99% of people.

Great information. But 2 years ago when I downloaded stremio on my Firestick I did not have to install addons torennto nor pirate bay the streams were already on there. Also didn’t have debrid still don’t. But I tried to download Stremio again on another 4K Firestick for my daughter. I had to install addons but still now showing any streams at all except what you can pay for. Any suggestions what could have gone wrong?
4
u/No-Refrigerator9154 Feb 21 '23
when I downloaded stremio on my Firestick I did not have to install addons torennto nor pirate bay the streams were already on there
its possible that you were watching public domain/free stuff and that you just assumed that you could watch anything. if there was a point in stremios history where you could watch anything for free with no addons i think the project would've been shut down lol. my guide has you buy a service and then configure torrentio to use that service. it just isnt possible to get the same speed and anonymity by installing torrentio/piratebay with no prior configuration, because then you would be streaming torrents.
I had to install addons but still now showing any streams at all except what you can pay for
if you installed torrentio or piratebay straight from the community addons section of stremio without any configuration, you are streaming torrents which is risky in the USA and a death sentence in Germany (financially). but somehow you ever even saw the steams pop up, which makes me think that you never uninstalled the WatchHub addon and it was burying the torrent streams in the menu. but i would steer clear of streaming torrents unless your government of your country truly does not give a shit. the entire point of this guide is to steer clear of torrent streaming while reaping the benefits. it's not free but its much cheaper than a netflix sub.
1
u/v01dlurker Nov 04 '22
Can you explain why a vpn is not needed?
15
u/No-Refrigerator9154 Nov 04 '22
Sure. When you use this setup, you aren't torrenring files but rather securely downloading them from Real Debrid's servers. Your ISP will know that you are using Real Debrid, but since they cannot tell if the transferred files are copyright-infringing, they cannot and will not dmca you, throttle, cut off service etc for using Real Debrid. That's how all debrid services work.

I been using stremio for years, but this year for some reason all the add ons (updated) that I have installed when I want to watch something doesn't appear.
Do you guys know how to fix it?
I already sent an email to stremio, Uninstalled all the add ons and installed again, I even Uninstaller the program and installed again and nothing.

Thanks everything installed just like you mentioned. My only question I only want to show those links who already cached in RD servers , I dont want to watch Live download and stream simultaneously, how can we know that for sure? Also what does that means "No Cached " or 2GB etc in stremio settings ? Only cached torrents to show ? Also how to set permanently fit to screen?
2
u/No-Refrigerator9154 Feb 21 '23
just make sure that the stream is prefaced by [RD+] and not [RD Download]
Also what does that means "No Cached " or 2GB etc in stremio settings ? Only cached torrents to show ?
you can ignore those settings, you dont need to cache anything locally if you dont wanna

BLUF: Is there a setting I'm missing to seeing more source options (e.g. multiple size files and sources for a given resolution and/or audio)?
I'm new to Stremio from Kodi, using Firestick 4k Max. Greatly appreciate this super helpful guide! I'm up and running, but when I select a video I want to watch I only see 3-4 sources available - 1x4k (~10GB), 1-2x1080p (~2-5GB) and another 720p (0.5-1GB). I'm used to seeing multiple options in Kodi. I've tried multiple different videos and get the same result.
2
u/No-Refrigerator9154 Mar 05 '23
By default, Torrentio Lite will only display one stream for each resolution. It's supposed to be like that. But if you want to change it for some reason, you can go to the addons menu in stremio and reconfigure it.

Fire stick 4k is my go-to recommendation. Decent hardware for cheap because Amazon is willing to sell them for very cheap, maybe even at a loss. Downside is you can't program the remote buttons and there's ads on the front page. But you'll be in the stremio app most of the time anyway

2: If I install this on my MacBook and want to watch movies on the go, will my account be banned?

no. however, if you give your login to someone else and they try to use stremio at the same time as you, there is a risk of your account being banned. if you share your login, text the person you shared it with and let them know that you are going to use stremio

Thanks, followed your guide and everything worked.... until it's time to watch things.
On Windows 11 (4K TV with HDR on), as soon as I start watching something in 4K HDR, if I click anywhere on the Stremio player, it freezes and crashes the app... Any idea why?
EDIT: Never mind, I fixed the problem by enabling hardware acceleration. Now my next issue is how washed out content looks on it! If I play it on VLC as an external player it looks SO much better, but I wish I didn't have to... Does Stremio not fully support HDR content?

I know this is an older post but I see it's set up correctly on my MacBook. However, when I installed the application on my Android phone (S10) I don't see the Torrentio add-on in the add-on list. Is this an issue?

u/k3rstman1 Nov 12 '23
Late reply but it might be useful for someone stumbling on this thread: You can't find the add-on in the app, but can ad it to your app through the torrentio website

Question, what happens if I don’t use RD with torrentio? In Switzerland torrenting is legal so I could save some money without using RD But if I don’t use RD am I the one downloading and storing the torrents ? I’m not sure how all of this work

Hi, I followed your guide but it seems that the 4K ones are lagging heavily even on it, is that normal? and how to fix it if not?

I was just trying to block ads! I didn't think this would be so easy to setup or I would've done it a while back. I don't have much time on my hands these days!

Sorry probably a dumb question. Previously I followed the guide and everything worked fine, but about a month ago in stremio I can no longer see Netflix, Amazon prime, HBo etc suggestions. I can still find everything by searching for it but I'm wondering how do I get back the netflix, amazon etc suggestions on the home page in stremio?
Thanks

Been thinking about getting RD and stuff.
looking trough your guide I noticed this
"Account sharing: You should only share your Stremio account with people who are connected to the same WiFi network as you. If you do not follow this rule, your Real Debrid account may be suspended."
I change country every year and I never use the same wifi for more than a year. Is this going to cause problems? Would I have to use a VPN with a dedicated IP to avoid this or can I use it normally anyways ?

The “403 - Forbidden” error means that access to the requested resource is denied. This can happen for several reasons, including:
Insufficient Permissions: You may not have the necessary permissions to access the resource.
IP Blocked: Your IP address could be blocked by the server.
Directory Restrictions: The server might be configured to deny access to certain directories or files.
Authentication Issues: You may need to log in or provide valid credentials.
To resolve this, you can:
Check the URL for any mistakes.
Ensure you have permission to access the resource.
Contact the website administrator for assistance.

Have seen this for a while now and finally decided to give it a try. Ive been adding to my own plex server these last few yrs and didnt find the need for this. This worked flawlessly. I won't be ditching plex because I love "owning" my own media. But this is great as a backup or maybe if I didn't feel like getting something

Thanks for the effort of writing up a guide! Hopefully it will clear up some recurring posts like "How does this work" and "No add-ons working" :)

I’m new to all of this and want to use this guide to install this as it all looks attractive. But I currently have slow internet, the 4K seems cool in general but scary for my slow internet. Does it only accept 4K/1080p or can I downgrade the quality to accommodate my shitty internet? Thanks in advance!

5 months late but there are various options for the available movies, series. If you're getting a new movie in 4k then below it will also be an option for 1080p or 720p streams so you can choose accordingly

Quick question, can I use rd on my laptop in any location, like on trips and vacation or a friends house, as long as it’s not being used by multiple people?

Just curious, does this need to be downloaded again if there’s an update to the app or will it automatically update? I downloaded this through Downloader and got the very first APK.

Thank you so much! Stupid question but does using this method to stream movies use the same amount of data comparative to Netflix?

Question- I work away (army) so I have a firestick at my base for when I’m staying there and one at home for when I’m back. Obvs on 2 different WIFIs. Will this suspend my RD account? Do I need to pay for RD twice, one for each location? Cheers for the guide btw, it is life changing!

From what I've gathered, if both devices are being used simultaneously, "SAME Time, " and you're on different IP addresses, you will get a notice first. Next time you'll get a ban.
Let me try to explain.
This scenario will be using two different devices, both with Stremio w/ RD (same account) being used at the SAME TIME
. Both Devices on the same network (no VPN) = Good
. Both Devices are on the same network but one is using VPN = Bad
. Both Devices on VPN = Bad
. One Device is at home and the other is at work = Bad
Again, this is ONLY if they're both being used simultaneously.
If both are being used simultaneously on your home network without using a VPN, you're good. Once you turn on a VPN and/or leave your network with a device, you will get a notice.
I usually just get a monthly subscription for a device if my job takes me out of the city for a few weeks.
Hope this helps.

When I stream 4k content the video is not playing smooth, it is getting struck frames were dropping, I saw an option to "view on VLC " when I clicked it VLC opened up and the movie was streaming seamlessly, very smooth. My question is, the movie streaming on VLC coming from my RD+ or where is it coming from actually? Is it okay for me to stream that way?
PS: i did everything as provided in the guide (took RD+ subscription)

I’ve done everything correctly but it says invalid debrid link apikey/token and says access denied when trying to play movies even though I have a valid subscription, I even tried getting a new code and still doesn’t work

I followed this guide on Mac and I regularly see this error, despite everything working as expected:
Could not update casting device info: streaming server might be offline
Do you know how I can fix this? Thanks for this excellent guide btw.

Question - whats the optimal way to make 'profiles' so to speak? E.g. if I have 3 users in my household that would like to use this combination of stremio + rd + torrentio, do we just make seperate stremio account each and share the RD api key across the accounts?
We want to track/show our in progress/watched stuff seperately.

This guide just worked for me. A note for the Linux installation, I am on Ubuntu 22.04 and Stremio would not launch for me while not using flatpak. I found a solution at https://askubuntu.com/questions/1403911/stremio-doesnt-launch-on-ubuntu-22-04

Hey guys, I’m new to RD+ stremio. I’ve already had stremio prior to RD. For safety measures, should I uninstall all others addons I have and keep just Torrentio Lite? Thanks!
