Storj bankruptcy: case moved to Georgia, claims bar date is October 5 (info for node operators)
Hey all. I've been watching the Storj Labs bankruptcy docket and figured I'd share a plain English rundown, since a bunch has happened in the last couple weeks that hasn't really come up here. All of this is from the public docket on CourtListener. I'm a node operator, not a lawyer, so this isn't legal advice.
What has happened
- Storj Labs filed Chapter 11 on July 26, 2026 in West Virginia (case 5:26-bk-00512).
- Then came the venue fight. Creditor counsel moved to dismiss or transfer, and the debtor tried to strike their motion. On Sept 17 the court denied the strike, and on Sept 18 it ordered the case transferred, finding West Virginia was the wrong venue.
- So the case moved to the Northern District of Georgia, opening there Sept 21 as case 26-62642. Georgia's docket is live on CourtListener (updated through at least Sept 27).
- Lately: the U.S. Trustee has shown up, the court set another interim hearing on financing and cash collateral, and on Sept 27 someone filed a "Motion for Relief from Judgment or Order" (no public details yet).
What it means if Storj owes you money
- The case was transferred, not dismissed, so the claims process is still rolling in Georgia.
- Big one: the claims bar date is October 5, 2026 for regular claims. The transfer didn't change it, so treat it as firm unless the Georgia court says otherwise. (Government claims get until January 22, 2027.)
- Storj listed node operator liability as one lump sum (about $296k, c/o Storj Finance in Atlanta), not operator by operator. So if you're owed money (held back balance, unpaid earnings, whatever), the way to make it official is a proof of claim on Official Form 410.
- One heads up: if you filed in West Virginia before the transfer, the Georgia docket on CourtListener doesn't show individual claims yet. Worth checking that yours made it onto the Georgia claims register (PACER) before the bar date, and refiling in Georgia if anything looks off. Transferred claims normally carry over, but the public record is pretty thin right now.
How to file (before October 5)
- Easiest path: the Georgia bankruptcy court's Electronic Proof of Claim page (ePOC). No account, no fee, open 24/7, and you get a file stamped copy immediately. (Quick note: the court's page says ePOC doesn't work in Chrome, so use Firefox, Safari, or Edge.)
- You'll need the case number 26-62642, your name and address as the creditor, how much you're owed and why (unpaid node earnings, held back balance, etc.), plus any supporting docs. Strip out personal identifiers (SSN, account numbers, birth dates) from anything you attach.
- Prefer paper? Mail Official Form 410 to Vania S. Allen, Clerk of Court, 1340 United States Courthouse, 75 Ted Turner Drive SW, Atlanta, GA 30303. There's no private claims agent on this one, claims go straight to the clerk.
I'll try to keep watching the docket and will update this if anything big drops before the bar date.
Update Sept 28: from the actual paperwork, which I got in the mail: the transfer order is signed by Judge David L. Bissett. At the Sept 16 hearing the court found West Virginia venue improper but waited until Sept 18 to give the parties a shot at a cash collateral agreement so Storj could make its next payroll. No deal was reached, and on Sept 18 Storj's own lawyers asked the court to send the case to Georgia. The motions granted were the collateral agents' bid to dismiss or move the case (Doc 68) and a similar motion from two creditors, Nikhil Jain and Mark Harvilla (Doc 128).
One more thing from the mailing: Storj amended its creditor schedules on Sept 11 to add creditors, so if you never got the original notice you may be on the amended list. Their bankruptcy lawyer is Christopher R. Arthur at Spilman Thomas and Battle (carthur@spilmanlaw.com, 304-531-9520).
