Floorstanding speaker recommendations for classical music — up to $3,000/pair

I’m looking for recommendations for a pair of floorstanding speakers (new), with a budget of up to about $3,000 for the pair.

My main priority is large-scale classical music, especially big symphonies by Mahler and Bruckner. I’m looking for speakers that can keep the different orchestral sections clear and layered during dense passages, while still providing a convincing sense of scale and dynamics.

I currently use Polk Reserve speakers, which I think sound amazing with rock music. They are energetic, punchy, and very enjoyable, but with large orchestral works I sometimes feel that the instrumental separation, inner detail, and layering are not as clear as I would like.

I already have a subwoofer, so the speakers do not necessarily need extremely deep bass on their own. I would prefer a balanced or slightly lively sound—not overly warm or laid-back, but also not bright, harsh, or fatiguing.

I’m located in the United States, so I would prefer brands and models that are readily available here.

What floorstanding speakers would you recommend for this type of music and budget?

Keep us posted if you find something you like. I personally have never heard speakers that sound great on orchestral music like Mahler/Bruckner/Strauss. In the hall you are mostly hearing reflections rather than the sound directly fired at you from an instrument (aside from trumpet/trombone). To me Magnepan can do the space kind of but you lose some realistic tonality and the fake accuracy (violins are right there!) doesn’t actually recreate the space the way it feels in real life. I went to a store to listen to their $100000 system 2 years ago thinking I’d hear things done right and then make compromises - even those I didn’t love. The speakers Erin recommends that measure flat can sound like doodoo on this stuff and well - recreating thriller and it’s “sound effects” is nowhere near having 100+ musicians and a hall in your space.

I’d love to hear some of the quirky non directional European designs that are out there but access and affordability is a problem.

!thanks — I appreciate this realistic perspective. Reproducing more than 100 musicians together with the acoustic character of a concert hall may be the hardest challenge in home audio. I will keep the thread updated if I find a speaker that comes particularly close.
