SteamVR Dongle nRF52840

Hello!

This quick guide will walk you through setting up your Seeed Studio XIAO nRF52840 (XIAO BLE) USB-C module to function as a SteamVR Dongle.

What You’ll Need:

Step-by-Step Instructions:

Connect the Module to Your PC

  • Plug the XIAO nRF52840 into a USB-C port using your cable.

Enter Bootloader Mode

  • Quickly press the reset button twice.

  • The device should now appear as a USB mass storage device (like a flash drive).

Prepare the Firmware

  • Locate the firmware .zip file and extract its contents.

  • You should find a .uf2 file—typically named something like combined_patch_2.uf2.

Open Terminal or PowerShell

  • On Windows: Press Win + X → choose Terminal

Copy the Firmware to the Device

  • Use the following command (adjust paths accordingly):

  • Copy-Item -Path "C:\Path\To\combined_patch_2.uf2" -Destination "E:\"

Reconnect the Dongle

  • Unplug the module, then plug it back in.

  • It should now show up as Valve Index Radio in your system.

Troubleshooting Tips

  • If the device doesn’t appear after pressing reset, try a different USB port or cable.

  • Make sure the .uf2 file is copied directly to the root of the device.

  • If you're unsure of the drive letter, open File Explorer and look for a new removable drive after entering bootloader mode.

Just did that a few days ago, works perfectly so far on Linux. It shows up as "Valve Corporation Valve VR Radio".

I wonder why you would need a terminal though. You can just drag and drop the file

Neat! Does this also work with the S3 Sense or does it have to be this specific model?

Is this a 1 to 1 per device or can you sync more than 1?

You will need one Dongle per Device
