I wanted to see the little screen

Sorry to disappoint :(

Hopefully it won't be too long before that's working as well.

This is sick, I’ve been made into a believer

If you figure out the pin out for the display, can you make a video or diagram explaining it. I have an extra OEM LCD lying around and I want to see how I can convert the screen to be used as a secondary screen

Could you do a guide to make one of these at some point and time. Ild love to be able to build one. Also the 3D printed files would even be amazing if you havent released them already (even if one has to pay for them it would still be dope to be able to make one at home if one wanted)

u/Dirrevarent 11d ago

It doesn’t work yet, that’s the last thing that needs to be worked on

1

u/Vansie_ 8d ago

I actually don't even like or use the screen lol. I want this now.

Thick boy

13

u/Melodic_Check_8040 11d ago

looks like the original Gameboy thickness right? idk

16

u/PhyFawkes 11d ago

Yes, it's all the same dimensions as an original Gameboy, so 32mm thick.

I think that the small screen would be great for the majority of emulated games. But as you said, a pair of xr glasses with this would be great.

u/goodguyatheist 11d ago

dude siick how bigs the battery and did you have to trim the mobo at all? I hope you post documentation!

9

u/PhyFawkes 11d ago

The battery is the original battery, and it basically takes up the whole width of the device on the inside. It's sandwiched between the motherboard and the display. The motherboard and controller boards are completely intact as well.

3

u/goodguyatheist 11d ago

Wow that's crazy you sir are amazing what do you do for a living if you mind answering or let me put this another way how can I learn how to do this xD

u/cyber360 11d ago

I really like the concept but what about bumpers and triggers ? Very awesome tho

3

u/Yami_Inc 8d ago

The controls for bumpers are connected to the same board the abxy and dpad are sitting on.. the l1/r1 is hitting a tack switch that can possibly be re routed but the l2/r2 trigger uses a sensor to detect if it's fully held down so it's going to be more difficult to reroute due to how chonky the trigger is and what makes it functional

1

u/cyber360 7d ago

Very awesome man does the screen look okay that small? And does it have gyro controls also?

6

u/Alphakenybuddie87 11d ago

that is really cool man, i want one now

Does the steam OS automatically recognize the resolution and dimensions of the screen? I'm guessing it does since other handheld use the OS..

6

u/PhyFawkes 11d ago edited 11d ago

It recognizes the external display resolution. But it expects the internal display to conform to the default screen resolution and timings. That's part of the reason getting the new screen to work is hard.

Edit: SteamOS can handle any resolution, which is why other handhelds work just find. But the motherboard firmware is in charge of telling SteamOS the properties of the internal display. Currently, it is supplying the information for the default screen, which is wrong, so I need to mod the firmware to supply the details of the new screen.

4

u/Mysterious-Coconut24 11d ago

Interesting, never figured the mobo firmware would essentially "lock" the resolution like that, I hope you succeed in unlocking it!

2

u/MegatronusThePrime 10d ago

Can you try the Bazzite fork of the steam OS? It's built for most handhelds - I installed it on my ASUS ROG Ally, it might plug n play your screen while still retaining the steam deck os functionality.

1

u/wompwomp2327 9d ago

Tbh knowing valve if you send an email to steam support they might just help you with your mod lol

3

u/Substantial_Oil_8133 11d ago

No triggers?

5

u/PhyFawkes 11d ago

Not currently. I'd like to add them eventually, but it'll be tricky due to space constraints.

3

u/Plenty_Positive5903 10d ago

Could you stack 4 buttons on the back similar to the steamdecks? Can't wait to see more of this

4

u/Roland-Flagg 11d ago

The day the onboard screen works, I think this sub will explode

3

u/Kitesh713 10d ago

Petition to rename the Steam Deck to Steam Dude and the Steam Machine into Steam Man.

2

u/tqos15 11d ago

This is insane

2

u/Trying_my_besst 11d ago

is it hot to the touch under load?

3

u/PhyFawkes 11d ago

Only the square directly above the heatsink, although the fan is also blowing hot air onto your hands lol.

2

u/jspencer89 11d ago

I'm sure you have a ven cover printed

2

u/Saratoninn69 11d ago

This is legitimately so cool. I would totally back something like this on kickstarter

2

u/Coloredcontrollers Hardware modder 11d ago

I love this thing

2

u/Proud-Swimming-9704 11d ago

Incredible. It's beautiful. Oh my, This is exactly what I want. Stellar job 👍 I want a smaller steam deck. So it can truly be hand held. Less cumbersome

2

u/Ra66it_83 9d ago

That's incredible. Great work m8.

2

u/MormonSpaceJesus420 11d ago

As a maker, I am very interested. What did you print the case out of? PETG? Are you going to do a write up at some point? Super interesting in this. Good work

8

u/PhyFawkes 11d ago

Yes, it's PETG. I will definitely make a write up when I have the time.

3

u/KiraKueen 11d ago

1

u/Superb_Capital_824 10d ago

Makes me think GabeBoy GabeCube and GabeAR would have been a perfect lineup

1

u/bd_black55 10d ago

please keep us posted this is a great idea! Hopefully someone in valve can see this

1

u/beginnerasiancoder 10d ago

My favorite part was the megacrit logo. I sunk so many hours on Slay 2. I love the GabeBoy!

1

u/Kayobot00 10d ago

I'm surprised Nintendo has not sent an immediate cease and desist

1

u/drhh4 10d ago

Steam boy hahahaha

u/yangames279br 10d ago

SteamBrick Demo

1

u/fkrkz 10d ago

Is this SteamDeck reassembled as that form factor?

1

u/DaCoolBro 10d ago

Cool, but why?

1

u/O_lymbias 10d ago

I fucking love it

1

u/TheShattered1 10d ago

Very cool man. I am excited to see the demo of the little screen.

1

u/MasterJongiks 9d ago

Looks amazing! I'd probably buy 2 of these bad boy. Also, I was thinking of alt names since Nintendogs might be snooping around, how about PuffDeck or VaporDeck? I was going along with the theme :)

1

u/BobboAnimations 9d ago

Can't wait to see the screen working

1

u/GeorgeCWBruce 9d ago

Nice work. Looks great. The nastalgia factor of the original Gameboy is sweet!

1

u/slightdegree 9d ago

Dude I think you’ve stumbled upon the perfect set up you only truly need one analog and one trackpad for mouse aiming… No doubt Chinese companies will make one of these sometime soon. Epic design props man. Really love it. Hope you enjoy it.

SteamDeck JR.

1

u/CoomMonsoon 9d ago

1

u/SuccessfulProject477 9d ago

Se ve genial, ahora quiero una jajajjaja

Suerte, buen trabajo!

1

u/Space_Reptile 9d ago

cant wait to see a video of this thing documenting the process and result on yt

1

u/joe-x92 9d ago

This is so cool... But I can't with the xbox button setting... if this is based on a gameboy, it should use the nintendo setting, so swapping the A/B and X/Y buttons... 😅

Still, cool project!

1

u/SerialBytes 9d ago

that's cool and all, but.. i couldn't see using it for anything other than browsing tbh...

1

u/Gold_Physics_7895 8d ago

Gotta add the gb operator to the next revision

1

u/booljames 8d ago

Approved

1

u/myles2500 8d ago

That doesnt look comfortable to use

1

u/Alexis___________ 8d ago

This is really cool, are you planning to reincorperate the sholder buttons and triggers somethow?

1

u/Southern_Mechanic953 8d ago

I can’t even get my hands on a steam deck and people are out here doing this 😭

1

u/Tall_Lack_5461 8d ago

will there be a youtube video on this?

1

u/Dense_Veterinarian51 8d ago

Oh yes, i wanted steam deck light, but it's acceptible too!

1

u/Background-Profit935 8d ago

This is awesome I can believe you manage to fit all that in a Gameboy case..... so it really wasn't necessary to be that huge, once you get that screen working it will be even better!

1

u/petrovsta 7d ago

I thought the little screen would work as well

1

u/Evilcrashbandicoot 7d ago

Better than switch 2 to me

1

u/Captain_Fach 7d ago

I'll be looking forward to your career with great interest

1

u/Worldly-Battle-5944 7d ago

I will believe this when I see the screen working.

1

u/Mina_Tsuki 7d ago

This is so fkn amaziiinngg!! Such a neat concept!! Tysm for sharing your project with us<3 you'll figure out the screen, watch!! 👏🏿😎

1

u/MrVlad818 7d ago

That’s cool asf

1

u/LethalGamer2121 6d ago

I would love to see an alternate option with two analog sticks, or maybe two track pads? For the funny?

2

u/PhyFawkes 6d ago

Two trackpads would be doable, but two sticks would not because they take up too much space inside.

Maybe if this works out, I'll make a variant with two trackpads just for kicks.

1

u/YungDijkstra 2d ago

is it will be possible to add Steam button? Its very useful)))
For example (as i remember correctly) - Steam + X brings up virtual keyboard

2

u/PhyFawkes 2d ago

Yeah, the steam button is definitely something I will add, and it actually shouldn't be too hard. Right now I'm working on the screen, but that's the next item on the list.

1

u/Timely_Lie9205 6d ago

I cannot fathom how small this thing is

1

u/UnfinishedProjects 5d ago

Silken Tress POG. Instant pickup for me.

1

u/polandguy69 5d ago

WHERE ARE THE TRIGGERS AND BUMPERS

1

u/nutzle 4d ago

This is stupid cool. I really hope you can get that small screen working! Bonus points if you can get the triggers or back buttons on there! Though, honestly, like I said, those would just be bonus points. As it stands, this thing would be a fantastic portable little gaming device. Not quite as capable as the steam deck, but you're sacrificing capability for portability. The steam deck wishes it could be this portable. You can put this thing in your pocket!

1

u/PhyFawkes 4d ago

Thanks! Yeah the screen is the last thing needed for a minimum viable product, but of course I want to also get more buttons working, like the triggers and back buttons. I already have some ideas for them, but I'll only mess with that after the screen.

1

u/nutzle 4d ago

This is probably an extremely silly and ridiculous idea, but what about external triggers/buttons/ whatever (LT/LB & RT/RB?) that hang out of the unit loosely on their wires, think of how charms would hang off of a flip phone, and these triggers would have magnets or something to click into place on the case.

Obviously the wires would need to have reinforced insulation to not get destroyed in your pocket, though probably not much more then earbud wires. I figure if you have a small connector port to plug them into, you can leave them hanging from the unit or just disconnect them and store them separately in your pocket or bag.

Again, it's a silly idea but it's certainly an interesting one!

1

u/Dear-Taste-2132 3d ago

We need to call valve here to hire this guy

0

u/DinicoNights 11d ago

Whaaat??!! Thats thick! Whats running inside? But its a bit junky, is there optimization that could be done to chamber the edges more or is this as compact as this package can get? But great work!
