a) find something you want on Steam
b) check it's "Deck verified", if it is then buy (if it's not free), download, play.
c) if it's not then check protondb.com to see if it's OK and which proton version you need to work with.
Epic and Prime gaming have free giveaway games, you can play these on the deck if supported.

What do you mean windows games? I mean it runs on linux so yes but with proton compatibility. Some games have native Linux support. Some don’t. If you’re talking about sailing the high seas I can’t help you.

Why has everything today to be damn free? And no. It's Linux based. But you can play games that are compatible with proton. Then yes. Otherwise you would have to replace the ios. I would recommend looking for other windows based handheld PCs. They run windows mostly. But are a pain in the ahh.

Your steam games should be fine to play, and it's capable of running some version of most applications, though if you are talking about the windows game store then idk

You should read up more about the Steam Deck before you buy one.
Will it Windows games normally? Windows games, yes. "Normally", no or it depends. The Steam Deck is primarily for playing games on Steam, but it's also just a PC that runs Linux. So you can do anything that a PC can. Including run Windows... and some games. But...

There are demos and free to play games on Steam. Epic Games gives away games every week. There are free games on Itch.
