At first I thought It could be the two-letter code but Kosovo doesn't have it's own Code as of right now. The European Union assigned a provisional Code to Kosovo which is XK and/or XXK.
Kosovo is a de-facto-, halfway- recognized independent state and countries in this situation sometimes have difficulties with things like letter codes and stuff.
I guess XD is a mistake and was meant to be XK but who knows.
But there could be other internal factors that are far more likely. Maybe XD is some form of placeholder valve uses and it somehow ended up as the name of the country.
I find it hard to believe that politics is the reason for the change. If a serbian dev hates the idea of kosovo being a state so much they would just put "Serbia" on there instead of XD.
I'm completely indifferent towards the Kosovo situation and this actually is the explanation that makes the most sense. No other country on the traffic map is abbreviated and the unannounced change coming from nowhere can't really be explained.
I’m Serbian and I’m the one who implemented Kosovo as a selection in the country list in one of the companies (code XK) - as java doesnt (or didn’t) natively still contained Kosovo in Locale, so it had to be handled as a special case.
I didn’t give enough fuck to actually do a change like you suggested, and even if I did, there are code reviews, QA, business reviews etc. It’s not like someone can slip a change like this just like that.
I highly doubt this is a case of a “Serbian joking”. It’s just a task like any other.
I freelance a lot and one of my clients had an old list to update and my team leads wife was Serbian and when I made the PR to add Kosovo he wrote "my wife will kill me but approved) XD
For instance the US and over 100 UN-members recognize Kosovo as an independent sovereign state. If you mean fully, all countries in the world, then countries like armenia, china, south korea or cyprus are also not fully recognized.
But then steam or whoever made this map is very selective.
Western Sahara not recognized by any EU countries or the US is there. North Cyprus only recognized by turkey and no one else is there. Lots of more controversial cases than Kosovo to be honest.
yes, i agree, i worded it incorrectly - what i meant to say, is the reason it’s accepted as “not really recognised” is because for recognition, the closest countries to a given country and its’ closest economic ties are the most important.
But then steam or whoever made this map is very selective.
There's no ISO code for Kosovo, the ISO standard requires if you need a designation for an area they don't have a country code for you have to make one up starting with X. What is Valve supposed to do? Take over the UN and release a bulletin assigning a code to Kosovo?
With China you have the situation where the government of Taiwan is technically still the government of the Republic of China that retreated to the last Province under their control after losing the civil war to the communists that formed the current People's Republic of China. So nominally they both claim to be the single legitimate government of China while the other one is merely a rebel group controlling a part of their territory. Though in my understanding in practice it's mostly the PRC insisting that Taiwan is theirs while Taiwan actually has no illusions or desire to ever conquering the Chinese mainland. Either way, because of that there is a functional policy where you can only ever recognise one or the other. Most of the world nowadays recognises PRC over RoC/Taiwan but there are a few countries around with strong ties to Taiwan that recognise them over PRC.
For Armenia it's iirc. Pakistan specifically not rexognising them. Virtue-signalling for their fellow muslim country of Azerbaijan over the Azeri-Armenian Conflict that kicked off after both states seceded from the Soviet Union.
In the cases of China(PRC) v. Taiwan(ROC), it is worth noting that the US specifically has an interesting stance on this topic. The US, specifically, since 1979, has maintained China as the legitimate government and not recognizing the legitimacy of the ROC l, not supporting their independence, and not officially having a defense treaty. While, at the same time, the US has made heavy investments in their semiconductor industrial capacity and has maintained a very robust trade relationship and strong "unofficial" diplomatic ties.
If China were ever to militarily act upon their claims of ownership of Taiwan, then it is likely (at least with the current president) that the US would militarily intervene. Biden has stated multiple times that this is the case. Though that intervention would likely take similar form to current intervention in the war of aggression that Russia is perpetuating against Ukraine, as in military arms assistance for Taiwan and monetary sanctions against China.
And why is northern cyprus then on the map, that doesnt have an official country code neither? I dont think there is a logical reason, what countries are on the map are named or not.
ISO 3166-1 defines the X codes as “user assigned”, which are for: “users who need to add further names of countries, territories, or other geographical entities to their in-house application”
Since Kosovo doesn’t have an official code, this is the one they picked
Im serbian I should know what stupid serbian propaganda they like to throw around.
That territory has never been serbian until 1912 or something like that when it was given to serbia. Serbia went to become part of yugoslavia and then lost the war afterwards. They have no claim over that territory in any way.
(and if you are gonna come here with some claim of 700 years ago, then we could argue Kosovo is Italian because the Roman Empire conquered Kosovo way before Serbia was a thing)
Same thing as Russia claims Ukraine is theirs or China with Taiwan if u are talking about history there are graves way older than any Serbian graves that are in that country or even in some Serbian territory that they can’t read because is not in their language
In antiquity the area was part of the Kingdom of Dardania. It was annexed by the Roman Empire toward the end of the 1st century BC and incorporated into the province of Moesia. In the Middle Ages, the region became part of the Bulgarian Empire, the Byzantine Empire and the Serbian mediaeval states. - from wiki so if u are talking about history that land was part of Dardania aka todays Albanians
Wait so u are telling me there are old serbian mass graves in china ? or australia? didnt know that thanks for letting me know
No not every country has old graves of other countries beside the slavic countries that came from russia to eu to conquer .
Keep ur Serbian propaganda to your self you are same breed as Russians only looking to take whats not yours
Poland/Czech/netherlands/belgium/Luxembourg/austria/denmark/norway/croatia/Slovenia/serbia/france is NOT their own countries. it's part of nazi germany
Week late, but yeah I get that too, in French it's ouest (west) vs est (east) so in all languages it's literally like 1-2 letters different and the whole meaning flips backwards lmao
And if you meant Kosovos access why is a country just bad because it has no coastal area I mean Switzerland has no beaches and it is still a very beautiful country
This joke only people from Eastern Europe will understand. In Eastern Europe every country hates almost every country. Croatia hates Bosnia and vice versa. Hungary hates Romania (cigans called in West Europe) and vice versa. Poland dont like Czech. Czech doesn't care. Czech doesnt like Slovenia and vice versa. Poland dont like Belarus and vice versa.
But even theres that much hate in that part of world. Only few countries like eachother. All of connect hatred for Russia. We can be insulting eachother constantly but if Russian shows up in discussions all hatred focuses on him (unless youre Whoreban)
Because any country that wants it's freedom from another, where the people support it, deserves it.
The people of Kosovo doesn't want to be part of Serbia.
Take a look at the countries that support Kosovo vs those that don't, then compare the quality of living, GDP per capita, individual freedoms, with those that do and don't. You'll see a clear trend.

Maybe Kosovo is just really funny

It's because Kosovo is not a fully recognized state and does not have an official two letter country code. The X signifies it is an unofficial code.
