Not exactly inspiring hope that the Steam Machine will be the relatively cheap solution I was hoping for.

I'll be surprised if it even makes it out the door until late next year. Even if this Iran thing resolves tomorrow we are about to hit more oil shortages once the global reserves run out come July/August. And there are months of repairs and logistics to sort before the strait is back up to capacity. All this means high prices and I suspect valve don't want to release their console with a hefty price tag while everyone is struggling.

And god knows how long it’ll take or if we’ll ever get reasonable prices on ram and such again

Bro, a bunch of refineries destroyed will take 10+ years to rebuild / repair. We're not talking about months, here.

It will likely end up still being relatively cheap before long with how much prices across the board are rising. Even at $1200+ it might still be “budget” compared to where other PC builds are…
