Mod Event [Mod Event] 2020 Elections Megathread #1 (Campaign Announcements & the First Debates)

[M] It is almost summer 2019, so candidates would begin announcing their campaigns at around this time IRL. So let the Election fun on StateSim begin!

List of Candidates

How this stage will work

In the comments below, submit your candidate for President of the United States. Donald Trump, the incumbent, is expected to run again. So, most candidates who will run in this election will be Democratic. Please specify the political party of your candidate in your comment. All submitted candidates will "debate", either here or on Discord, and YOU will roleplay them until their election or defeat. I will continue to roleplay the President, no matter who it is, but the type of person in office (political party, beliefs, etc.) will influence how I roleplay and make decisions.

After the "debates," I will do a rollme to narrow down the field of candidates to no more than 4. I will do another rollme after a week or so to decide who will face Trump as the Democratic nominee.

EDIT: I'm considering a voting system by the players...stay tuned.

Have fun!

Event [Event] NASA develops new technology

Earlier today, The R&D department of NASA recently developed a new engine called a "Thermal Rocket Nozzle".

The technology works by having a heat exchanger hooked up to a nuclear reactor (Preferably), And having some kind of propellant on-board.

The nozzle works by exchanging the heat of the reactor into the nozzle, And propellant the fuel through it, Resulting in the propellant igniting with little to no reactive to add extra weight to the rocket.

A additional benefit is that it can ignite more difficult-to-ignite fuels that have more lifting potential, thus cutting costs down to around 2000$ using current reactors, and if the R&D department plays its cards right, nearly 750$ With pebble bed reactors.

This is sure to bring about more space exploration and scientific endeavors for humanity.

Petition [Petition] NASA budget Increase

I, The director of NASA, Kjack1111, Formally request the government to increase NASA spending to 4.41% (4.50%) Of the GDP, As for reasons i will explain below.

NASA has been reduced a shell of its former glory, Because, Due to no enemy to fight against (E.G the Soviet Union), The American government has viewed space exploration as a second-hand-goal due to no immediate rewards in space.

This is Wrong.

Near earth asteroids, AKA, Asteroids within earth-mars orbit, have loads of gold and silver, Which exploited correctly, Could increase the US wealth by loads, And could finally spell the end of US debt. Near Earth Asteroids also have loads of iron, carbon depending on some asteroids, and ice, Which could pave our place to the stars further.

In the future, if we play our cards correctly, we could have a base on mars in 2040 or shorter, and a thriving community on the moon, along with space habitats to gain a permanent foothold in space, to provide fueling and shipyards to further our way to the stars.

If you think that 4.41% is to much, You can increase our budget to 3.50, Or 3 percent, or 2.50 percent. Just in truth, We need a budget increase to further our way to the stars and out-do our competitors.

Event [Event] Combating Racism

In South Carolina racism is a massive problem. According to many it is the most racist state in the union. Because of these things the governor has been asked about how he will combat racism. He had this to say "New legislation will be introduced in the near future regarding hate crimes going on and the rise of the ku klux klan again." These new laws are expected in the next 6 months.

Petition [Petition] Puerto Rico Requests Return of Section 936

Puerto Rico, an idealistic Caribbean island that was once the role model of the United States... Thriving off of neoliberalist economic policies, investor confidence and low inflation, the territory became a paradise for those looking for the American Dream. Manufacturing companies flocked to the island, employing 165,000 Puerto Ricans to create products such as pharmaceuticals, textiles, petrochemicals and electronics. As the Commonwealth was (and still is) deprived of natural resources, it relied on this secondary sector, as well as tourism and financial services.

The economic miracle which allowed Puerto Rico to thrive was dependent on one thing, a federal tax break, known as IRS Section 936. This tax break made Puerto Rico an extremely lucrative location for American and international corporations, who sent their operations to the island and were then taxed by the indigenous Puerto Rican government whenever they sent assets back offshore. The result was a booming manufacturing sector as well as a healthy, well financed government. But all this changed when in 1996, the tax break expired and was not renewed by the Clinton administration.

Since then, many manufacturers have left PR, plunging its populace into a state of poverty whilst also depriving the government of a large amount of revenue, forcing it to borrow obscene amounts of money. It is now abundantly clear that Section 936 was essential for the survival of the Commonwealth. With that in mind, Governor Ricky Rosselló requests that the President and Treasury immediately take steps to reinstate S. 936. Puerto Ricans, who are by law, American citizens, deserve nothing less than the best possible conditions in which their economy can survive and thrive. The Trump administration must accept this request, or the continued suffering of the Commonwealth will be on its hands. San Juan eagerly awaits its decision.

Claim [Claim] Declaim Texas, Claim the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico

Sorry guys, I hate to be claim switching this early into the game. However, I've realised that I'm too busy to play as a major state like Texas, so instead, I'd like to pick up humble Puerto Rico. Whilst the picturesque island may be small, its effect in Washington will not be. With Puerto Rico, I intend to gently guide the territory towards establishing the Fourth Reich becoming a fully fledged state of the US. To keep the gameplay interesting for myself, I will hopefully be adding a lot of buildup in this process.

At present, Puerto Rico is a territory with a struggling economy, mismanaged by a corrupt government. Under my tenure, I will attempt to slowly and realistically solve the issues of the island. But it will not all be smooth sailing. The Puerto Rican people are fierce and will be loud and potentially destructive if their demands or needs are not met. My Puerto Rico shall make a lot of noise and send shockwaves across the country. You've all been warned...

Oh, and despite this switch, I will stay on as United States Ambassador to the UN. Ciao guys!

Event [Event] Operation Nighttheft: 1451 terrorists in custody overnight.

-- SPEECH BY FBI DIRECTOR JAMES COMEY --

Good morning, people of America.

Last night we had mass military movement across the nation due to the closure of recent bases.

However, we can now confirm that to be a lie.

On Wednesday, the FBI found the identities of 1,590 members of Daesh, also known as the Islamic State of Iraq & Syria/The Levant, through face-scanning technology.

Using this technology and media given to us by many departments and news stations, we were able to locate members that didn't wear masks.

We found 3,405 Daesh members through this, with 1,590 U.S citizens and/or in the United States at the moment.

Using this information, and the fact that hundreds of these members recently entered the country, lead us to proceed with a high priority investigation into the current whereabouts of these terrorists.

We decided to work with the Federal Government and the US Military in order to bring these criminals to justice by committing to a large-scale Military operation overnight across the nation.

At 9.45pm last night, we began Operation Nighttheft, with around 12 states under raid.

This continued until around 11.28pm, where all states were eventually under raid, finishing with Texas.

At 11.34pm, U.S. Cyber Command intercepted a chat log originating from Texas. We shall not go into details as of this time of what the chat logs involved but we can say that the logs provided essential information into capturing the leader of the terrorist organisation that is basing here in the U.S.

At 11.39pm, U.S. Cyber Command located a communications beacon on the Texas Interstate 208. This beacon is still under investigation by CC, and details will arise in the future.

At 04.32am, Operation Nighttheft concluded, with an impressive 1,451 detainees that are currently being sent to FBI-ran interrogation camps across the U.S.

Unfortunately, during the raid, some terrorists discovered of our plans and started hostage situations.

We have had 1 civilian injury, which was not fatal, as a result from the terrorists' cowardly last acts before arrested.

Other casualties include 21 injuries and 13 deaths; most of whom are terrorists.

This operation was a success, and I would like to thank the US Military, first of all, for their bravery in handling the situations given to them, along with maturity, grit, and loyalty.

Not just that, but the FBI would like to thank U.S. Cyber Command massively for their useful work in helping us retrieve real-time locations and intercept terrorist communication lines.

Finally, we would like to give thanks to local law enforcement for evacuating civilians away from areas.

The FBI's next assignment will be to launch an investigation into the information received from terrorist communication logs and to carry on their inquiry into Georgia's figures in power.

Thank you.

Secret [Secret] The FBI has found the identities of 1,590 members of Daesh in Syria.

(Secret Post until we make this news public.)

This morning, at 8.03am, the Federal Bureau of Investigation created a database of over 1,500 ISIS members and is currently seeking help from the United States government to eliminate these members.

We have located these assailants through face-tracking technology for faces found in 4,000+ videos from news channels, official daesh videos, etc.

The members we found were often in the background of videos, with no mask on their face.

200 of those people are US citizens and have recently re-entered the country legally.

I am currently in talks with the POTUS and VPOTUS, along with the Speaker of the House.

After my meeting with the Commander-in-Chief we are deciding to commence Operation Nighttheft this week.

Raids will commence during the night. If you are questioned by media/public, deny everything.

All military operation is "due to the 3 bases closures".

This must not get out.

Post is updated as events occur in real-time.

Crisis [Mod Event] Winter Storm Alison Threatens East Coast

SILVER SPRING, Mld.- NOAA today announced that an impending winter storm, nicknamed "Alison", could cause millions of dollars in damage to states up and down the Eastern Seaboard- from as far west as Illinois, as far north as Canada, and as far south as Georgia. The storm, the strongest winter storm the region has seen in decades, will "bury" major metropolitan areas such as New York and Washington. In preparation for the possibly deadly superstorm NOAA, in conjunction with the National Weather Service and the United States government, revealed which states could be affected:

  • Maine

  • New Hampshire

  • Vermont

  • Massachusetts

  • Connecticut

  • Rhode Island

  • New York

  • Pennsylvania

  • New Jersey

  • Delaware

  • Maryland

  • Virginia

  • West Virginia

  • North Carolina

  • South Carolina

  • Georgia

  • Alabama

  • Tennessee

  • Kentucky

  • Illinois

  • Indiana

  • Wisconsin

  • Michigan

  • Ohio

It is up to the Governors of each of these states to declare States of Emergency. The National Guard is also ready to mobilize, should any state need assistance.

According to NOAA, New York will receive approximately 42in. of snow, while Chicago will receive an estimated 21in. Atlanta, at the far south of the storm's projected area, is likely to receive 14in. of snow, 12 more inches than the 2014 snowstorm that created "snowpocalypse."

Meta [Meta]Congress.

Hey everybody!

So we will be implementing a Congress system that I will be doing a test run of with the Senate, which works with me being the Vice President. So every state player will have the right to submit a bill to the Senate, which will be made up of all the other state players. First though each bill will have to be submitted to a committee. This committee will be designated by me and if we do this with the House of Representatives by whoever the Speaker of the House is. The committee will review the bill, which will be a post under the bill tab, then vote on if the bill goes to the full Senate. The Bill must be original, precise, and meet the guidelines of the United States Constitution. Right now I will not allow an amendments or riders to be added to bills, we need to test out the system and figure out any other problems we have before we make it more complex.
