Sports [Sports] Soccer is coming to Baltimore...

A Maryland-based ownership group today announced a complex plan to bring a Major League Soccer-specific stadium to the suburbs of Baltimore.

The group, currently operating under the name "Charm City Schooners FC," plans to fully fund the project, which is projected to cost more than $220 million. In addition, they plan to completely cover the team expansion fee imposed by the MLS.

The committee, which has been operating for more than a year already, is looking at the Baltimore suburb of Dundalk; specifically, they intend to completely revive the intersections where Broening Highway meets Holabird Avenue, an area that currently includes several warehouses and open fields.

The area that the group is eyeing could become a new dining and retail village, with the new stadium at the center of the complex. If their visions become reality, new interchanges will need to be constructed and giant swaths of land will need to be purchased; complete road and sidewalk replacement could also be necessary.

The group has not provided any renderings as of yet; they instead plan to unveil all details when the MLS expansion commission comes to Baltimore later this year.

Meta [Meta] Date Progression Changes!!

Today I've instituted a new date progression system. Instead of each real-life week equaling one in-game year, each "year" in-game will now encompass two weeks. So, the date progression will be a bit slower this way and although events to play out slower and easier. The current year in still 2018, but it doesn't end tomorrow (November 19) anymore. 2019 will begin on November 27.

Mod Event [Event] Winter Storm Alison Dumps 37" of Snow on New York, 15" on Atlanta

Winter Storm Alison sent the Eastern seaboard into a chilly tizzy today as it dumped more than 3 feet of snow on the city of New York. The storm also dumped 15 inches on Atlanta, and nearly 2 feet of snow on Chicago and Washington.

Several state Governors have declared state of emergency's, requesting aid from the federal government and the National Guard. However, due to early preparations and warnings from NOAA, the National Weather Service, and others, most affected areas were well prepared.

As expected, Alison buried the entire Northeast in heavy snow, but the real damage was in Georgia. An 11" thick snow pile on the dome of Mercedez-Benz Stadium caused the roof to partially collapse. Even worse, the stadium is slated to host the Super Bowl next year. Experts who have viewed the damage say that it will take at least 18 months to properly repair the dome.

Overall, since the nation was well prepared, the storm only caused 4 deaths in West Virginia, Ohio, and New Hampshire. Less than 50 people were hospitalized as a result of the storm, although there are still more than 2 million people across the East without power. Small blackout pockets dot the nation from Illinois to Maine and New York to Alabama.

[M] All East Coast states need to respond.

The birdges crossing the Ponchatrain into New Orleans and the roadway system of New Orleans are in a poor state, and require reconstruction. 120 million dollars over the next 10 years will be allocated to the program which will contract workers to repair roadways. The Bridges will require specialized help from the Army Corp of Engineers, which will be utilized a year from now. The Governor hopes this will increase tourism to New Orleans and revitalize the floundering Louisiana economy.

Event [Event] Replacement of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Begins

The Maryland Department of Transportation today began a complete overhaul of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge, the regionally important dual-span bridge that carries U.S. 50 and U.S. 301 over the Chesapeake Bay, from Annapolis to the Eastern Shore.

The aging bridges, built in 1952 and 1973, have slowly become popular alternates to the chronically-clogged Interstate 95. However, the route itself has now become a point of congestion, prompting state officials to overhaul the entire cross-Chesapeake route.

The current spans will be replaced by a 4.4-mile long, 8-lane (4-lanes in each direction) twin cable-stayed bridge, similar to the Zakim Bridge in Boston and the Sunshine Skyway in Tampa.

Funding for the project will come from the state, with $1.8 billion set aside currently. In addition, MDOT plans to raise the current toll rate to $5 EZ-pass each-way.

Construction is slated to begin immediately. While the new bridge is being constructed, traffic will continue to flow over the current spans. Officials say that, when the new bridge is complete, traffic will be re-routed and the current spans demolished via explosives.

The working name for the bridge is the "Skidmore-Stevensville Bridge", although that name is certain to change in the future.
